Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> Protestant and Catholic Ireland
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Kame on 2005-03-13 at 02:49:30
Few people know about the civil war taking place in Ireland right now between the Catholics and the Protestants. It has been going on since around the reformation to put down general time standards.

It's horrible violence. Orange is a protestant color and green is catholic. If someone were to wear orange in a catholic neighborhood, they would at best get seriously hurt. There are walls seperating catholics and protestants.

Neither side appears to be ready to concede defeat.

Thoughts and discussion on this.

Wow, no FireKame I haven't heard of that. Seems violent gosh....Well I have no opinions so far. Maybe if you can tell me more specifically on what it is they are fighting over? Was there something recently that happened to make them fight? Or is it just that they have been enemies for a while now? Is it only in Ireland? Hmm I guess I can do some research on it.

The thing they're fighting over is whether Ireland should become a mainly protestant country or a mainly catholic country.

I'm not sure of the exacts myself because our wonderous school system doesn't allow for much history in those parts. (which sucks)

Oh, it's a big problem alright. The Irish blame the British for the problems, and the British blame religion - but it's probably a combination of both.

By the way, this conflict does not take place in Ireland; it takes place in Northern Ireland, which is a part of the UK.

Which side you take depends on whether you read Irish sources or British ones. If you read Irish sources (which seem to consist of hysterical haranguing of the British) then you'll support the Catholics and Republicans. If you read British sources (which are more moderate in their tone), then you'll support the Protestants and Unionists.

The whole Irish Question has made its way back into the press lately, because the IRA (Irish Republican Army i.e. terrorists) offered to execute its members responsible for the murder of a man in a pub.

EDIT: Tazzy - you're aware of the problems in Northern Ireland, right? I think you meant that you hadn't heard of problems in Ireland.

Hmm, so I don't get why this is JUST starting to break out now. If they are arguing over whether to be Catholic or Protestant why didn't it start a long time ago? I know there have always been conflicts but not as bad as what you guys are telling me. If I can't get more information I will need to go look it up. You don't want to make me do that, come on I am lazy, help me out. biggrin.gif

it isn't just starting. It's just been put on hold because we can manipulate the middle east's problems better.

Okay. maybe a bit cynical...

It started some time in the 1600s I think, when Protestants started settling in Ireland.

The problems were really bad in the 70s, 80s and early 90s. IRA members detonated bombs all over the place and murdered people, including Lord Mountbatten. There were also atrocities committed by the British as well: The Bloody Sunday massacre, where soldiers opened fire on demonstrators because they thought they were under a pipebomb attack; killing 13, is the best known of these.

The BBC's news site on Northern Ireland.

God, I was just looking at some Irish sources on the Irish Question. I'd love to have sympathy for them, but I really can't when all they can do is spit vitriol at the British.

Oh, and here's a message to all you Americans: Please stop funding the IRA (there is good evidence for this). It is a terrorist organisation, not some group of 'blessed defenders of freedom.'
