There's really no point. I'm assuming you just mean squares and not extended terrain, in which case it'll be like a normal map - but worse.

lol it would take five minutes to make. no balancing or anything.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Rhiom on 2005-03-13 at 21:59:18
it would work well for tvb shared but i think for anything else it would be a bad idea.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Yenku on 2005-03-13 at 23:18:48
i guess if it were one of those TvB maps with infinite minerals, then i guess i wouldnt matter. just dont use null for god sakes.

I've tried that once before, I didn't like it. It didn't feel like real melee, and the blocking became a large obstacle for the units to navigate, often confusing them and making them go the wrong way. Idk about any of you, but when I tell my units to go to a specific position and they go the other way, that pisses me off.

I don't think you should use this idea, normal terrain for melee is definately the better choice.

If you did add square terran what would it add at all?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by notnuclearrabbit on 2005-03-15 at 00:10:31
It wouldn't add anything, in my learned opinion, lol, I think it would detract from the overall feel of the map. Melee maps have always been made with isometrical terrain, not square. Square terrain really gives the map a UMS feel, which you don't want. The only way I can think of to make your map feel right with square terrain would be to have it a money map, with sprites all over, and noone would play it.

Actually, I just looked through some of my melee maps, and I found one with square terrain, and alot of sprites like I mentioned, and guess what; it's got a UMS feel.

umm, i think he was serious, he wasnt mocking you.

Square tiles in melee maps. If you put square tiles in a melee map, you are not a pro, its that simple.

Sometimes people aren't looking to be professional... merely to have fun?

What I stated in my previous post though, is that, square tiling for melee is not any fun and that it is a bad idea.

i hate the idea of square tile for anything... keep it for bounds or wtevr but melee maps are supposed to feel natural and crap... not blocky!!!!!!!!!!!
Report, edit, etc...Posted by LethaL on 2005-03-15 at 16:55:25
What if you used extended terrain? Using square tiles to blend high dirt to water or make a high cliff so Siege Tanks can't see on top of it for a melee map sounds fun...

But I don't melee much, so I wouldn't know if this might unbalance the map in any way. blushing.gif

cool1.gif Well We've Seen People Talk about this and it is Concluded.

- We Should Not Make Square Tile Melee or TvB Maps.
- IF you feel differently, Just Post your Opinion.

What Yenku was saying Ace(T), is that your previous post was useless because most of us can read and already understood that 1x1 terrain for melee is a bad idea.

I just figured I'd clear it up for both of you.

It adds more then you would think...

Lets think for a moment, low and high terrain.

a unit shooting from low terrain has a reduced chance of hitting a unit from a high terrain and vice versa, placing squares of high and low terrain(on high) at chokepoints and key areas, increase the strategies by more then 2fold.

Placing certain units upon high terrain allows for the unit to see all terrain above that are in high terrain, increasing its vision range greatly. Allowing for scouting in places that you would never expect.

What else is interesting is that, you can place terrain that "appears" to be low terrain or vice versa on the opposing height. Allowing for random or unknown scouting points.

The list goes on...

Who cares if it looks blocky... There IS terrain that you could blend using extended terrain...

A few blocks never hurt anyone...

That would just make maps more confusing. While we are at it, why not add a bunch of triggers that reveal parts of the map, give powerups, etc.?

It's because that isn't what melee games are about. They are straightforward and skill-oriented, not full of random craziness.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by MapUnprotector on 2005-04-05 at 18:01:37
Maps with square tiles are usual boring, using the same type of tile. Also I wouldn't even call it a melee map if you did that, you might as well make it one of those lame money maps, some of which are already square tiled.

You can't really play a serious professional game on a square tiled map, it just isn't the same. People aren't used to it and it would make a really bad map. Most of the time when square tiles are used they eliminate the whole ISO look which is really a big part of what melee is about, and it eliminates all those various wall tiles that are placed randomly when you make an iso terrain highland or lowland.

I would like to see a very GOOD square tile map.
