I was thinking at work... The other day, opposable thumbs i hear alot about if we did not have them, all that we have created would have not been done..
I was thinknig, how do you really know this? *Im not one for being smart so Meh)
How do you really know? I mean we could have invented other thnigs... With out the use of opposable thumbs..
Does anyone understand what i mean?
Opposable thumbs allow us to grab things and pick things up.
That is what i mean, If we never had opposable thumbs. We would grab or pick thnigs up some other way using only our 4 fingers.
Just think no human had Opposable thumbs we are smart enough. We would still go on life without them.
Guess that's y God made us opposable thumbs. So we can conquer the world !!!!
Ahem, without opposable thumbs, we cant even write! Written language is what makes us the most unique species here on earth.

Primates have opposable thumbs too, so it's not a unique thing to just humans.

Not true.
It
is possible to write without using your thumb, it's just harder.
Our opposable thumbs are a great tool, yes, but there aren't many things I can think of that absolutely require them; they merely increase speed and precision when manipulating objects.
Without opposable thumbs we might have given up after getting frustrated. Unless monkeys and apes have apposable thumbs, then I have no idea. The first tools were things like pointy sticks =/ would it have really been a better idea to use those without opposable thumbs than to just whack things.

I beg to differ, have you ever held a crayon in you hand and tried to color the whole paper very fast? In which way are you holding the crayon?
You can also grab and pick things up without opposable thumbs, just grasp it to your palm. If we had no thumbs our technology would be very unique, but still advanced.
I disagree with everything you said about technology advancing... however...

Maybe this is trivial but, it's a lot faster to colour the paper in a sweeping motion (using that handy thumb) than to grasp the writing utensil like a moron and start scribbling. Have you ever tried to write like that? It doesn't work out very well. Our thumbs are what seperates us from the animals! I don't see dolphins building anything. No one wants to grab things with their palms... know why? Because it's witchcraft! All the people I know who did that were burned!

Would you like me to post a screenshot of me writing near perfection like that? First you have to fork over your webcam.

It's not my fault you live near El Ghetto Taco Bell.
The creation and use of tools, or inanimate extensions that help the creature do something it wants to do, is one of the most clear displays of an animal's intelligence. Primates make tools all the time - using sticks to reach things, perfecting rocks to be sharp enough to break open coconuts, etc.
Tools can be made without apposable thumbs though. There have been scientific studies of birds who are able to reshape twigs or even a coathanger wire to use as a tool to get food or other things. They don't have apposable thumbs, but here they are showing signs of intelligence not often seen.
So... I think the advancement of a species has to do with the kind of intelligence they've evolved with more than the shape of their limbs. In a case like this, I think humans would be able to come up with something as long as they're able to survive and reproduce first, even without apposable thumbs.
...But obviously apposable thumbs sure as hell help a lot.
Witchcraft! Burn the birds! Throw them off a cliff! ...wait a minute... proof that birds are witches, they can fly!
Q: If five birds are sitting on a fence and you shoot one down, how many are left?
A: Seven! What?! WITCHCRAFT!!!!11
Rofl.
Anyways...

Faster, yes, but as I said, it's still quite and readily possible.
Do you want to live in a society of witchs?! Is that what you want?! Do you want to be Harry ****ing Potter?! I for one am against witchcraft! Who's with me?
PS: I think I'll make a garbage forum topic about this >>

You can pick things up without using your thumb, but it's much harder to do things that require some amount of precision. I tested this a while ago by trying to hammer in a nail without using my thumbs, sorry to say I hit my hand a few times, and dropped the nail on countless occasions. ever realize how hard it is to pick up something small without using your thumbs?
Opposable thumbs just seems to make things easier because we learned how to utilize them effectively as a child. I've heard stories of people who were born without arms and are still able to do many simple tasks with their feet, such as eating and writing. If someone had no thumbs, I'm pretty sure he or she can learn how to use the other fingers effectively and efficiently
Opposable thumbs just make our lives easier. Without them, many seemingly trivial tasks (ie. writing) become much more difficult. One can eventually adapt to doing tasks w/out opposable thumbs, however.
We wouldn't be where we are today, that's for certain.
If you devoted as much time using things without your opposable thumb as you did doing things with your opposable thumb, it would be just as, or nearly as functional either way.
Thumbs are what seperates us from animals... and having huge amounts of inteligence...
anyway, we would have diferent inventions in some ways, so we can do things better without a thumb. But we would just be behind in the timeline....
