When will this earth die? Will it fade away due to the sun moving far apart from the earth? Will it be taken over by other races? Will it be destroyed by natural causes (meteors, ice age again, etc)

what do u think?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Screwed on 2005-03-15 at 23:21:19
Define 'die'.

Earth itself doesn't possess 'life' and is not regarded to be living. Therefore it's already 'dead'.

If you are talking about the animals on the planet, then it's a different story.
However, if you mean the Earth blowing into million of bits, then its a different story. But an Ice Age doesn't mean Earth is going to do that. Not even meterites will (Unless if its relatively big). So it still comes to what you mean by Earth dying. At the end, the Earth will still probably be there, since the sun has a possibility that it may not expand enough to swallow the Earth. So even if the sun blows up, the Earth can still be there floating in space, "essentially" being there, maybe regarded by your definition as being dead, but perhaps it is still big enough to be one piece to be existing/ 'alive'.

This thread ought to be changed to "The Earth's fate" or "The next catastrophe of the Earth" or "Natural forces of the Earth" or something.

However, it's something that has been discussed a lot in other threads as well, such as "what will happen in a hundred years etc." People usually just broadly cover the surface of humans damaging the Earth's environment etc. There isn't anything really indepth about this discussion anymore.

It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter at all. You wanna know why? I'm not going to tell you. I'm just going to keep talking and talking. And talking, to get more minerals... Just kidding. Anyways, why it doesn't matter...

Because it's a time so far from now, so far from when your life will end, that it doesn't matter. It wont matter to any of us, our kids, or probably even our kid's kids. Unless something crazy happens like Six-thousand nukes go off at once and blow the crap outa Earth. Or if a huge giant asteroid on collision course with the planet. But whatever, that stuff shouldn't worry you. And you shouldn't think about that kind of stuff because it doesn't matter.

Just wait for oil to be replaced as a major fuel. Say, hydrogen cells. The Earth will stop existing when our sun expands near the end of its life, billions of years in the future, and engulfs the Earth in a fiery ball of plasma. As for life, I think that the greenhouse effect will be quite destructive to many forms of wildlife, but even if it does come to that, we'll survive.

When the ravaging of Earth threatens our survival, we'll all build rocketships and fly to the moon and inhabit capitalism there. Just like the movies!

Hydrogen fuel cells are a problem. The common misconception is that they will solve all of our energy problems when in fact, they cannot. In order for a hydrogen fuel cell to give off energy, it needs to have energy put into it first. To make matters worse, hydrogen fuel cells do not emit as much energy as they need to function. The end of the world will start very soon, when Oil reaches it's peak in mining (around 2010). The problem is, once oil supplies go down, cars go down. Home heating also vanishes. The problem is, all of the suburbs rely on imports and exports to major cities. When the suburbs can no longer get supplies from the major cities, Wall marts and K marts and supermarkets in general vanish as well. Now, the only thing left to do is to construct mini generators in small villages and in areas of the suburbs. The generators would have to be huge to get enough renewable energy to power that area, however, and would cost tons of money (who can put a price on life anyway). Housing would be reverted to farmland. Your front lawn might even become farmland. People will try to move back into the large self-sustaining cities but, it will be too late, they will all be full. Perhaps then, we could pull ourselves back up in small comunities and still survive through the internet (keep in mind that all jobs too far to walk/bike to and all jobs related to cars will no longer be acceptable to you), and we will return to our former glory. That is the happy ending. It is possible that people will become insane trying to find food to feed their families, and total war will erupt between every city in the world. People will kill just to get a tomatoe, and everyone would die. The few that remained would be so crazy they wouldn't even be able to get food for themselves. That would be the fastest death of the world, 2018. Even if we survive that, global warming could come, and . . . [/depressingtheory]

Let's look on the bright side . . . . . . . . . err, I'll let you guys think of a bright side to this cry.gif

Tarh: That is incredibly unlikely. I would eat my hat...no, I'd eat a shop full of hats if either of those things happened by 2018.

One of the truly renewable sources of energy is coppice-burning of wood. Unfortunately, the power plants that use this source aren't very powerful (150 hectares of coppice only provides 10MW).

Guess why burning wood in this way is both renewable and doesn't cause an increase in atmospheric CO2 levels?

Because only 1/3 of a coppice is harvested for energy at any one time, and it takes 3 years for the trees to grow back. This means that there is always 1/3 available for harvesting.

Also, because you have planted these trees recently, they have been taking carbon dioxide out of the air and putting it into biomass. When you burn that biomass for energy, you are just re-releasing the carbon dioxide. That means that there is no net increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels.

Well I will tell you this magical story I heard long ago. A long time ago, people didn't have oil to keep themselves warm, they built a fire. I know... it's hard to comprehend, but it IS possible. wink.gif

Earth didn't begin with a supermarket growing out of the ground feeding all life on Earth, People wont just die out because food isn't for sale anymore, they will just hunt for more food. If they kill each other, that means less mouths eating food, meaning population will just rise up again (Yes humans can reproduce, it has been proven.), population will never lower because of starvation. There is something called "hunting" for that. In fact it would be much better for the Earth because use of technology would lower and less weapons and chemicals would be able to be used. The end. smile.gif

i think the earth cannot ''die'' because the world can't exist this is only a fiction everyone is prisoner of his spirit and our spirit is a little part of the ''all''. If the world really exist its look like the machine world in the matrix all human connected to a giant computer. this is why, i think the earth can't die

I believe that there will be a rapture and a day of judgement some time not too far from now but not very soon if you get me. i believe this because it says in the Bible that when Israel becomes a nation, the end will draw near, and as we all know Israel became a country about 50 or so years ago which is not very long ago.

The earth's 'end' of a sort is by a unresloved mystery, because untill that day, those who are here today, may never see the dawn of the marvellous scene. Yet to this day, we have no idea of when, or where the world's end will come or take part, but we assume and predict of its coming. But are we ready? That is a question that we as humanity must discovery. And yes, I use the world, marvellous.

Factor One:

Like Screwed mentioned, what is the term meant by 'death'. By dictionary definition, it means, the 'termination of life', derived from a latin word, which lterally translates to become 'The end'. Yet even though we are told that the earth and all who inhabits it shall be decentegraded in a matter of (billions of) years, we are still completely unable to know. Why? Because there is simply no fixed way to predict or in a more realistic term, understand time. If or if not this is the truth (No one will know) , time is not fixed, doesn't run on a fixed law, and compiles with that of light, motion, and energy. Which, as scientific research leads to claiming, they are all bendable, and here bendable I mean, not-fixed. Why I mention all this? Simply because we have no idea of when it may happen. Since we don't even have knowledge that the next day will actually appear, we have no control over when the end will come. So what do we do? We deduce it. We suppose that since it happens everyday for the last century or so, tomorrow, will be a repeat of what today is based upon. Same with the end, we suppose since there had been an ice-age, there will be a end, and for the end, it may take humanity millions and millions of years to refurblish the world. If this is so, then let it be.

BUT

Simply by this theory, it can NEVER be the core source to it. Fine, it may take a really long period of time to rebuild the world, BUT when you think about it, people back in the ice-age had no choice but to let it all be. Wake up, hunt, eat, keep warm. BUT TIMES HAVE CHANGED. Us people here today may never have the strength or stability to cope with that type of struggle. For whoever's sakes! We can't even be bothered to go and get the remote! So what makes us think we can all substain another ice-age? For this, I doubt, since we simply don't even know if it WILL be an ice-age.

Factor Two:

What the end will become of. We simply have no idea, no research, and NO blimming clue to it all. WHY? Because the nations of our world presume that we all must spend all the concentration, money, and whatever we have and turn it into contribution for the country, military or whatever - Just so whatever country will be the ultimate and foremost in everything.

We think of the NOW but not about the FUTURE, which we should. Whatever we do now, may not appear to have its side-effects now, but it will be released into the world in future. How to prevent this? We must take action. Think about the future and concern about what we do.

What we do now, may affect the 'end'. The ice-age, total climate change. Why would it all of a sudden, turn from a nice warm overall climate, into a cold iced up place for tens of thousands of years? The reason, unknown. Through assumption, we believe it is a natural cause - and fine, if it is, then conclude here. But currently, now is different. industrial purposes, all about personal possession. Think of it then, the ozone layer, big hole, making atmosphere warm and melting polar ice-caps? may not seem as a big deal now, but wonder what happens in a few 10,000s years? Oooo!!!!!! BIG OCEANS COVERING LAND, FROM 70% INTO SOMWHAT 98%!!. Terrific, isn't it? And we think the Asian Tsunami was bad.

Factor 3:

That thing about "New species of live on Earth", I would think not. Us Humanity through the large periods of time have demonstrated evolution, (note: Evolution is quite frankly impossible. Not opinion, fact.)adaption, revolution and the somewhat 'changes'. Back in the ice-age times, humanitarian were by far, slower and less equiped for the world. We had no means of physical defence, no claws, no heavy fur to keep us warm and neither did we possess a great sense of kill. But at the edge of time, we proved powerful, most-powerful, stronger than all that was around us and provailed into the world. Why? Because we were equiped with a mind. A mind that gave us the way to think, communicate and ultimately, to love. Love allowed us to build friendship and in terms create communities, with communications, we took it further. With a open mind, we were able to think and pose strategies to provail our weaknesses, hunt for fur, hunt for food, train to become better equiped.

What I am stating here is that, if the world's end deletes the majority of us, the remaining will be able, through the longest of all times to rebuild the earth. Like the ice-aged humanity, they were weak, compared to us now, we are much stronger, not as innocent, much more quick-witted and able. So if it does happen, the it in theory should happen once again. At the verge of humanity, we should be able to build ourselves and pass on a new era of humanity. Before we found fire, now we enhance the nucleus, future? The future holds the key to our survival. But here is the concerning part. Before we could survive in anything, weather, climate, terrain. But now? All we care for is a nice house, warm bed, and freshly prepared and cooked meals every day. If we have deteriated this far, WHAT will happen to our next generations? If we are what we are for today, what will our future BE? Of course we would want them to be better, but how is that to be done, when we ourselves can not achieve it.

Therefore, I conclude with this. Whenever or whatever the earth's end shall be, humanity would pay the biggest part in preparation and the 'fate' (result) of Earth's end. Whether it is ice or flames, it will be our sole responsibility. As it is quote "It is for the past, that we look forward". It is for the past that we prepare for the future. We presume that tomorrow will bring new lights, but that is all just an assumption, same with the end - We do not know. Simply with this, currently we do not know of it. 'Us who are here today, may never sight the dawn of its end. The end of the earth, the marvellous scene.'
