Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> Pig organs instead of human ones?

The other day I went to the Tech Museum in some city that I forgot( my friend took me) there was this section where it talked about surgeons using pig hearts in place of human hearts in and operation due to lack of doners, etc. Do you think that this is right?

If it works, It could be a temperary substitute for people, but I doubt it would suffice as a permenant solution.

We eat pigs regularily, so how's it any different if we use their organs directly instead of indirectly (through process of digestion)?

Unless there's a better way, go for it.

Well, it isn't just pig hearts they're using. Scientist people are actually growing human organs inside of pigs. They have pigs that have human blood flowing through their veins and all that crap. Or else they're in the process of that happening. I think that's a good thing. But we shouldn't go overboard on that kind of stuff. If people are dying they should just die instead of going through a ton of hassle.

Yup. You hit it right on the nail there, Tuxedo Templar. We use pigs for all sorts of things, so why not use their organs as substitutes for our own?

if it is guaranteed that there is no danger, why refuse this cure? That does not disturb me. After all, some among the human ones are already pigs laugh.gif but I can understand that some will not want. aaaaaa science, I will be always astonished by you clapping.gif

Yes they are growing an organ from YOUR genes in the pig and then transplanting it to you.

You're referring to the heart valves. The heart valves are replacement for the human heart valves when they degenerate. But there may be rejection problems and the pig heart valve tissues degenerate every 10 years, so you have replace with one every ten years. (An open heart surgery every 10 years, and when you're getting old - its too risky to do that). And there is also a concern that in the future if we keep using other animals donars, there will be a risk that diseases may intercross the animal to human border. In addition to the above, there is also a perhaps more efficient mechical heart valve that doesn't need to be replaced after inserted. The only problem with that is it sometimes causes blood clotting problems.

I'm going to try and say this in the most unoffensive way ever.

Cool.

if one can have new diseases, finally I believe that one would have advantage to keep only the human ones. let us leave the pigs quiet, except to eat them eat.gif

Screwed is right. Even when pigs proteins are very similar to the human ones, they are bit different. That might make rejection on the pig body, or on the human one.

The dicision should be fully up to the person who needs it. Some may oppose, some may support. Personally, I do not support nor oppose. Since, it is quite very well able and is successful. But of course, for those sci-fi fans, you can never get a full human-pig , since, our DNA make up, are completely different. With our chromplas, stating at 48, and pigs of about 13.
