Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> Strangers or people you know?

Many people spend much of their time on forums like this and talk to other people from all other places.
Are those people are strangers to each other, or not?

The poll is spacific to SEN, but the quastion of this thread is general for every location in the internet (forums, ICQ, MSN, etc...) that you know, are people on the net that you talk to regularly considered strangers by you?

Yes. If I met you in person we'd be strangers, or maybe "electronic acquaintances". How people write and how they socialize are totally different, in my experience.

In some respects, I agree with Noz...pretty much because I don't know 80% of the community even on an aquaintence level.

However, certain members on SEN know more about me than some of my real life aquaintences know.

So it's a little of both I guess is what I'm trying to say tongue.gif

I consider myself to know and be known to any online friends as well as I am with anyone I know in person. I see little to no difference between online and face to face.

I'm new here, so yes, the people on SEN are strangers.

But for people on the net that I've talked to for a long time and have become acquianted with? Well, no. I don't believe you have to have to have physical contact in order to converse and connect like human beings. So yeah, what Noomu said.

Well, some people I have talked to alot I've gotten to know, but most of the people here are complete unknowns to me.

Meh, kinda no. I tell people here stuff, but if you came to my house, told me your SN, and said "Can I stay for dinner?" I'd be like.. *slams the door*

Online friends should stay online. closedeyes.gif

Online friends should stay online.

Why is that?
That's like saying 'IRL' friends should stay IRL friends.

I'd probably be a lot nicer to someone in real life if I can identify them as somone good from a forum I go to, but for the most part, online people are strangers. There are exceptions like when you actually get to talk to certain people online a lot, and you can consider each other good friends, but I guess that's a completely different psychology.

For once Nozomu, I agree with you! hahaha......Ya I know some people that go to my high school who are MUCH more bolder/daring when online then in person when in a conversation. How people talk in person can be VERY different when on a computer becuase that person knows that they are pretty safe behind the computer screen then in front of some one.

There's something else that needs to be taken into consideration.

It's obvious, as Noz said, that people do not act the same online as they do in real life.

So aren't you creating a new entity online? So wouldn't the other people you know online know you as well as you know yourself? If that makes any sense.

Give me two days and an espresso americano and I'll get back to you with a response.

I'd say no because even though you've never seen the person, doesn't mean they are a stranger. Look at the blind folks.

well, it depends on how much interaction you have with people.... most people on SEN i would consider myself to be a strnager to, but their are a couple people on online games such as d2 who i would consider my freind becuase i have spent a matter of years getting to know them...even if it is online, if you interact regularly then u can get to know people.

Well lets see, there is no real good answer for this. It all depends on how the person feels about whether people on SEN are strangers or not. My opinion is that everyone here is a "friend waiting to happen" closedeyes.gif So my thoughts are yes and no, people here strangers but there friends over the large network of the internet ermm.gif Heh
