Staredit Network -> Terrain -> A few RPG Screenshots
Report, edit, etc...Posted by LethaL on 2005-03-22 at 11:29:22
Some Screenshots of the RPG I just started:
[attachmentid=6670]
[attachmentid=6672]

And here's a temple I did long ago (Posted here) that I fixed up a little:
[attachmentid=6671]

Any suggestions? Less sprites?
I know, waterfalls. My cat isn't moving.

Well, It's a bit too much sprites there, and the walls of the waterfall is a bit block, but otherways it was awesome =)

happy.gif Thanks. I know the waterfall (The second one, right?) has a lot of sprites, but it gives it more of a 'lost' feel. The blockiness on that one was also hard to overcome; if you can find a better way to remove it I'll be glad to use it.

The high, turning ramp seemed cool, but it was hard to add to a high cliff. It can probably be done better, but I like mine. smile.gif

I like the temple a lot, it looks more like a castle though.

I don't like the other two on the other hand, they're sprite-intensive and very blocky.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by MidnightGladius on 2005-03-22 at 12:37:51
Yeah, the blockiness is kinda extreme in the first two.

Also, in the first one, what's up with the sign on top of the temple door?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by LethaL on 2005-03-22 at 13:13:41
Hmm, all right. I'll work on the blockiness on the first two.
The sign on the temple door is just that; a sign.

All I got to say is your rpg is gonna be awsome with that kick ass terrain.... And nice Sig btw.. happy.gif

damn, those are pretty good, i need to take a screenshot off too show you a little blocky in the first screen, but otherwise GJ smile.gif]

EDIT: ah yes, here we go.. its a little blocky in the places circled red smile.gif

Wow. Thanks much Torrasque, that really helps me improve (Not being sarcastic; it really does help). The only problem is that it's quite hard to improve on a doodad like the ramp, where the sides NEED to be the actual parts of the doodads, or it'll look blocky.
I'll try to improve on the rest, though. smile.gif

Heh, thanks. My only RPG problem is lack of extremely uber triggering (I want it to be awesome, and I know how to do it, but like you've seen, I've got very complex triggers).

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'll try to improve blockiness so I can remove some sprites, then repost the pictures and see what else you can find.

In such a cliff, using doodads like terrain rocks and trees can cover up obvious straight edges. If used correctly, it can be very appealing.

The extended ramp has one serious place ON the ramp under the bush... Im prety sure you didn't try to blend that in very hard? Because it looks plainly out of place

Overall Ill give the Ramp a 7/10

The Waterfall (2ed picture) Need some work... Waterfalls have been seen and done before but yours has a different top with the archers... it looks interesting

6/10

BTW: The colour of the civilians looks really weird try a tan or a light blue... Those are alot easier on the eyes and their clothes dont have spots tongue.gif

happy.gif thanks Odd.
On the ramp, I fixed the blockiness under the bush.
And for the Civilians, I just chose a random color to see what came out; I'm not using the colors seen in the pictures.

I can see from your minimap that you really have just started this...
Anyway I like the terrain a lot, but I think your going to have a large task if you want the whole map to look like these shots. Anyway, what I really liked what the overall look of this is. (that is if the two pictures are next to one another, which I assumed) a ramp going from the base of a waterfall to the top, quite cool. wink.gif

I agree, the temple looks really cool, I think you did a great job on that waterfall, making it two sectioned waterfall. That looks pretty cool. But the cliffs you made do look quite blocky, I bet with a little extra work you could make it look not so blocky. And the sprites, they just make a nice looking effect, I say you should leave them there. As long as they dont mess up the map too much your fine :-). Sprites make a map look nice. Just dont over-do it.

I'd always start off an RPG with a good looking town, then do normal terrain for the rest of the map, then finally add touch-ups (Sprites and Extended Terrain). Hopefully I won't hit any limits when finishing up the map (Or even getting started, really). Like you know, I did JUST start the map. smile.gif

I'll try using the Temple at some part of the map, I just don't have anything done yet. I have fixed a bit of the blockiness on the ramp, I'm just unable to get on to take a screenshot. closedeyes.gif

Thanks for all the input. I plan on adding some more stuff tonight, but first I need to finish up on storyline/quests/etc (Which isn't quite as easy for me as it might be for others).

Sounds great dude, I hope you can add screenshots later on in your RPG so we can see all your great terrain. It'll be hard to keep all the terrain looking good so, if you do by anychance keep it on the same basics, it would be awesome if you could show us. I think your RPG is going to turn out great. Oh and by the way, whats the name of your RPG? Did you think of one or do you not wanna tell anybody? We arent theives (Most of us) so I doubt anyone would take your name. And again, good luck on it.

happy.gif Thanks, that motivates me even more to want to finish this.
The name is 'Shan-Ishi: The Search' (As listed in my sig). I'll try to make terrain as best as possible, because I know some map makers who do really good extended terrain tend to stop trying as hard as time passes in the map.

Heh, I know what you mean. It has happened to me before, I was working on a map and I started out with some pretty neat looking terrain but as I got farther and farther the map kind of fell apart. I hope your map doesnt share the same fate as mine :-) Good luck again dude. Your doing great.

Don't jinx it. biggrin.gif
Well I would recommend spending a great deal working out the story, I think that it's what seperates a good rpg from a bad one. Good luck with your map! biggrin.gif

Without the blockiness, the terrain looks great. And it will be a good rpg when you are fully done with it. I hope to see more fasinating terrain, as you get further into making your map. Good Job smile.gif

I dont believe in that crap. The only way a map goes bad is if the creator gives up :-p. Wich I doubt he will on this one seeing as hes already got some badass looking terrain. And probably thinking up a great storyline..Lol. Oh well, I cant wait for this thing to come out, I still enjoy looking at that cool looking ramp, aye, a bit blocky but that can be covered.

happy.gif thanks again. I already have most of the before-game story-line. All 3 main characters' backgrounds are completed, and their personal info (I'll post if you really wanna see it happy.gif).

Cool, but I would save it for one big release. wink.gif
