I'm thinking about making a Risk map (with real dice and everything, not this battle risk that sucks) and I've finished making the outline of the terrain of north and south america. I'll post the map with the terrain when I'm done so that people can use it if they need it.
I'm using a technique some artists use - draw a grid over the source picture, and one over the thing you're drawing. Then make each block as similar as possible.

Wow Hemidal Im impressed
Although I am wonder how you will fit Europe, Aferica, Australia, and Asia Into That...
Heres and Idea for your map... Dont have 1 building that shows the area...
I belive you should fill EVERYWHERE with powerups or units and then you can give the units in the places to players... Then on the mini map you will see what player owns what continent or area with Incredible ease... Also it would be prety cool
The image is just a section of the minimap, not the whole thing. I like the idea of using the minimap to display owner colors, but covering everything with powerups would make the map look messy. It would also require some odd-shaped locations to make it work. I'll try to work out something that looks good both on the main screen and the minimap.
Update: Africa and most of Europe finished. Madagascar and Britain are a bit bigger than the scale of the map, but only cause I'm gonna have to put something on em. Africa is closer to S. America than in real life, but this is what the real risk board looks like, so I'm going with that.

P.S. This is done entirely in Starforge...I'm kinda regretting that decision now because it means there is no ISOM section in the map and decreases its use to people who don't use SF. If you don't want to do any major terrain changes, I guess it's still ok though.
*drool drips from mouth* wow.... *drip...... drip...... drip.....* *wipe*
Can i help with the game itself if you dont mid? =D if you wanna do it alone or already got some 1 i dont care just lemme beta or something =P
and u better hope the world wont addapt to the sims 2 and make a skill sapper cause your 1st on my list for terraining =P
Edit beacause of your edit: there is a way to make SF kinda work with isom *i think* what i did was take the isom that looks wierd and rubbed it around the map filling up the whole thing or a section then use it again with a different type and it will come out looking like SE or xtra
Edit 2: i forgot your the programmer of SF so you prolly know this already =P
very good i can't wait to play your risk.
Nifty. If you used an existing non-sf map and imported the continents with brushes, you might be able to get some ISOM that way.
Nah..the only way to make it work perfectly with SE is to completely re-create it in SE; either starting over or just going over the existing thing with the dirt brush. It won't entirely be possible either because there are certain isometric constructions that SF can do that SE can't.
Anyway I'll just hope that no one wants to change the terrain in any significant way once I'm done. And if they do, they can use SF.
...Hawaii?
Very good, I'd like to see an awesome Risk, or Axis and Allies map.
Looks really good so far, I remember someone making another attempt at the same thing. By the way, The Atlantic seems a tad bit small...?
Cool, but I agree with Mp)3, you should widen the atlantic, possibly by extending canada's islands a little more. I'm guessing this isn't done though, as there is no asia. (or australia for that matter, the best place in risk
)

I'm modeling it after a picture of a risk board, not an actual map. And no, it's not quite finished yet. I should have the rest of it done by the end of today.

I'm guessing you'll be adding Asia into there as well? And you might want to widen Great Britian just a bit...
On a side note, I wonder why people are drooling over this? It's dirt terrain, and while you might be going for accuracy on the Risk map, I think it looks a bit too... mechanical for my preferences. I also take it you'll actually implement various types of terrain?
Where's Asia. Put Korea in it and I'll always play as Korea. PLEAAAASE?!?!?

Do you know how to play Risk...?
Anyway, very nice job with the accuracy Heimdal. It looks great. Isn't SCMDraft compatible with SF and SE? So couldn't you just put it into SCMDraft as a brush and then copy it into SE? I'm not really sure though, I don't use extended editors much.
SF is the only editor that can create isometric-style terrain without the ISOM section. Simply copying the tiles via a brush doesn't do anything with ISOM.
I'm only doing the outlines of the continents for now. When I finish the world in this manner I will post the map for anyone to use. For the actual game, however, I hope to put actual terrain like grass and mountains and trees and stuff on the continents.
It looks very nice. Just some parts look a bit deformed but its still good. (Québec looks kind of small).
I don't get how you do the trace things.
I think it is very accurate, but I must say that your second picture with africa and some other kind of country above it looks hideous. I think you should try and re-do the second part and if you could, make it a little smaller. You're taking up too much room. Sea battles would be awesome too. If you could pull it off that'd be great.
That looks pretty cool. Tho i swear seeing a map on SEN that looked like a world map before... whatever, it sounds fun, gl.
Is it going to be the good old-fashioned version of RISK for the boardgame, or are you going to make an option to do those other types of RISK on the board games, such as secret RISK?
Are you also going to have options that you can choose before the game just like you can in the boardgame, such as that "captain" rule where you can turn any of your die into a six once during your turn? Will you have the fancy cards??
Nice map! It's very accurate!! Keep working, it looks like this is going to be big!
The gameplay will be as close a copy of the original boardgame as I can make it. So no, there will be no sea battles. I'm not quite sure how I'm going to mark the number of armies in each territory or how the fighting will happen yet, but I have a few ideas. I also plan to implement the card system too.
As for the disproportion of Africa and the rest of the map; that's what the Risk board looks like. I can't very well change reference maps in the middle or everything'll come out screwy. It's also pretty damn hard to get the detail of Eurpoe in there with the scale I'm using. If I make it any bigger you'd have to scroll pretty far to select what country you wanted to attack.
For Battle style, you could try a formatted version of the Campaign Virginia Fenix'01 battle fights, without the conflicts and replacing them with use of dice, just randomising, and just make it so players are set two a single battle at a time.
Never seen it. Link?
I'm planning on using a comsat station like a mouse pointer, so when it's your turn you comsat the territory you want to attack from, and then comsat the territory you want to attack. Then maybe I'll have the units that represent the armies move off to a side area and do all the dice rolling.
What are the dimensions of the map? 256?

Are comsat's owned by p12? I didn't know that an actual unit was created so that it could not be used as a pointer. I know in the editor however it has the marine... is there some unit that spawns in game? If that doesnt work just have corsairs at the center of each country, that would be simple enough.
Comsats create "units" for you that reveal sight (during replays you can see them on minimap).
However, it is not possible to center a location on a comsat.
