"Dont open protected"
or better yet:
"Open protected, disable saving"
Protect YOUR name on YOUR maps. Vote no to unprotection.
I voted already, though I think people should be able to choose the "level" of protection that they want, whether they want to allow people to see, or if they want to show people nothing at all. This is because in some maps (especially RPGs, and sometimes in betas), the author might not want to disclose specific secrets on the map, such as the locations of certain places that are important to the map, which the author wants the users to discover on their own. Other maps might not want people to steal credit, but still want to allow people to see how things were done on the map.
I agree with that to some degree. I believe you should be able to choose. Personall i think people should be able to open it and study it... get to know the triggersand learn something from your work... but they will not be able to save it due to the fact other people will want to take credit for it.
Then all your secrets would be revealed, your map easter eggs, etc... A map is made to be PLAYED, not at ALL to be sneaked on. Staredit was made priory to make maps and edit them, not get random maps off battle.net and modify/spy it. They shouldn't even allow viewing. Saving is worst.
Thats why i beleive there should be the option of full protection or jsut against saving. If its a map that you have alot of secrets ina nd such then full protect it, but if its just something that you paticularly dont care if others see... say you make a defence map but add in some unique triggers other maybe interested in... then just dont allow saving that way they are able to glance at it and be like oh thats hows its done... hence they can make their own map using a trigger style you use... maybe its just me but i dont think of it as someone stealing your ideas... i think of it as them using similar triggers to create more good maps for the community... but thats just me

Notice that people looking into other's maps steal us popularity, since they won't have any more questions about Staredit...
lol
I highly doubt that anybody is actually going to be playing my maps, so I haven't even bothered with that stuff. (hell, I haven't even saved half of them...)
I guess your right to some degree Shadow... don't get me wrong i do agree with you on it totally, I'm just not to concerned about popularity as i am about getting maps out there that people will enjoy and having them learn something if they so desire and make something from what they have learned which can then benefit me and other because we have another map to play. But I do agree with you on the fact that it does kind of degrade from the original creators popularity... thats why i fully protect the maps that i spend ALOT of time and effort into making.
Hmm...perhaps we can have it this way: Map is protected in StarDraft, and when you open it, its displays some kind of custom message, and it also allow us to modify degree of protection. And it could allow you to display some kind of message, like "Send all suggestion to blah blah blah" or "Trying to look in my map, HA!", or etc. Would be informative for some maps, and you could also use it to taunt people.
heh what i think is it should allow viewing of only triggers and locations and no actual units terrain ect. and NO SAVING i think we the mapmakers should ask blizzard to make a custom program where we import our map names and creator of it so thats the proof and on the map ddescription it always gives the real name then again....it's been 6 years since starcraft started ..only an expansion added....and speculation of starcraft two is in 2005.... f*ck blizzard.
I agree with those protectin Lv.
But it should be a problem if u want to keep some secrets of any map hidden if u want to other people look how did u made some triggers (take them like an example)
sry about my english im not from an english country
I think it shouldn't open unprotected at all. If someone wanted to know how to do something, I'd gladly explain it to them.
it has hapend to me a lot of times i want to see how do they do some kind of maps (like bounds) but everyne is protected and its kind of anoying because i dont want to see the secrets of the maps (i dont think bounds have secrets.)

Some people have other ways of learning things. I dont mind if anyone looks at my triggers, I mind when they change my name.

Thats what im talking about, it really doesnt bother me to much that people look into my maps as much as it does if they change my name to theres and alter a few minor things... for one i dont like Version people due to the fact they see something wrong with the map that doesnt "flow" with the way they want things to go so they edit it and apply "Modified by: *Name*" which is dumb because if a lot of people saw the same issue as that person during the beta or whatnot the creator would have caught it. So hence why i fully protect all of my maps now.
I would just be happy if anyone would want to look at my map but i never would want anyone to change something and making massive amount of versions or just change the name or something..
I've done a few "Modified by:" maps, but then again, they were mostly to correct rigged versions. Like the "later" versions of Fleet Command. Though I'm going to try to make a new remake soon, with more thing to do, and on a larger map. I think I can reduce it to 4-6 players instead of just 6 players.
I protect for 2 reasons
1. So no one steals my map
2. So no one edits it, Many people will open a map look at it do nothing and when they close they save, this ends up with a new copy of the map floating around and makes downloading conflicts.
I used to not want people to see my triggers and such but im becomming more and more shareing with my triggers. I personaly belive some of my work is among the most complext trigger systems starcraft has seen and showing people the actual triggers only proves it.
