My latest work. I'm within days of finishing it (though expect some additional time for testing/tweaking), so I suppose I'll work up some hype before then. I promise you won't be disappointed!

What is it: In a nutshell, it's an action/adventure style map utilizing my gunner system. I've tweaked the system to be more user friendly than my previous maps, while still keeping a certain amount of limitation to it to add tactical elements (reloading, weapons with different damage capabilities, etc.). But fret not: For those who didn't like the gunner system before, I assure you there will be much more to do than just plain gunner stuff this time around. wink.gif

How to play: The map will allow up to 2 players, though single player will be the prefered way to play it (empty LAN or bnet game only, as vanilla single player has issues with certain triggers and effects). You can choose to be either a gunner (P1, defiler) or a bomber (P2, corsair + probe). Each has their own set of weapons, weapon upgrades, and strategies on how to use them (though I recommend P1 for beginners).

The goal, simply put, is to reach the end before the game's timer expires (ala Time Crisis). However, don't take that to be the limit of depth to what you'll be doing. In addition being a gunner/bomber, you also get to:
  • Pilot vehicles (such as cars, bombers, mechs, turrets, and more).
  • Solve interesting puzzles.
  • Play through 10 levels of mayhem.
  • Fight 6 unique bosses.
  • Purchase and upgrade 4 unique gunner or bomber weapons, plus 1 secret weapon (each).

Why?: Consider this my apology for A&O. In fact, this WAS what A&O was going to be originally, though since I added a story, characters, and a more diverse battle and adventuring system (which you'll see a part of in this), I never finished it before my intented fall 2004 date. Unfortunately, thanks to SC's limits, I may not ever get to finish it (unless someone makes some sort of Automodder program, or mod playing somehow becomes popular again).

P.S. Tell me if the title color effect shows up in your browser.

Rush?
OMFG..
Thats my old SN... Ugh, if I change my name now... People'll think its related to this map sad.gif

Anyways,
I waited for A&O patiently, and was horrified when you canceled it... So. finish this.

2 players, w00t!

Good luck,
And God Speed on it.

ED: - Additionally, I can't really afford to change it now anyways.. -.- was waiting on SENv5.. Timed out on editing this. -.-"

Is this the map you showed me? With the burrow/unburrow reload?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Tuxedo Templar on 2005-04-07 at 15:47:32
An earlier version of it, yes. I haven't shown anyone the latest version thus far. It's really starting to shape up into kickassness.

I'll have to see that for myself wink.gif

Man I can't wait to get this off to all you guys doubting I can do a real map. Though I'm probably going to spend some extra time working on it to be sure.

Well I'm simply getting the impression people think I can't do anything besides experimental concept maps. Worse still, since I'm usually more open about my thoughts and information than others who've also been around awhile, it's easy to think I don't know as much as I really do. I'm more careful than others when trying things new, as I don't try to act like a know-it-all like I used to.

I realized at some point that no matter how good I get, I'll always be learning new things, so there'd be no way I could rightfully pretend I really did know everything (even though I very well could). Not to mention it's easier to divide up problem solving between multiple people, instead of becoming a know-it-all and getting stuck with it all yourself (which I also used to do... and unfortunately still do more than I should).

My real reason, though, is that before I call it quits (which won't be right away, so don't worry) I want to get at least one "solid" map out to show for all the time I've spent doing map making. I don't want to leave here and be remembered only by a trailer for a project I never finished.

P.S. Forgive my shameless ego. I use it to help promote maps.

Conceptual experimental maps are the best kinds of maps! Those are the actual maps that are different than any other kind of map! Sheesh if it wasn't for experimental maps then sc would be full of maps like bounds, all based on the same thing. Also conceptual maps have the best complicated triggers and systems wink.gif Which is the best part.

W00t, i remember you showing me this a long time back. I can't wait, im sure you used some of your badlands doodads too. It'll pwn.

The one map to rule them all.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Ferral on 2005-04-07 at 23:40:39
Hm,
Don't worry about it Tux, I'm sure you could release some newbish melee map, and people would eat it.

I've always loved your work, before I even knew SEN existed. You was like a Panzer_Kavalier. Then I found SEN, when I searching for maps. -.-

.. And if yall don't know who Panzer_Kavalier is well.... I don't know if you should be shot or well what.. But, I enjoyed his maps as well..

Anyways,
We're here for you, if you need help. Well, for encouragement atleast wink.gif

Long time = 1 week? Huh.

Well, in an interesting turn, I've managed to add 4 new sections to the map ahead of schedule, including a cool secret boss battle to make things interesting. I'm wary though when progress becomes too smooth, as it usually means triple time debugging/testing later on when I start to churn out content faster than is safe to do so. In other words, no release date forecasts yet.

But damned if the map isn't already over 3 megs in size from all the wavs. This wont be a big bnet spreader, obviously (2 player slots almost ensures that anyway), so I'll be counting on you guys to help me spread it when I finally finish it.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by axblader on 2005-04-08 at 17:37:33
your maps are always good!

but cant you use Chu's OSF thingy?
it would reduce it to jsut the map, not the sounds.

but then, it'd be hard to spread, but il bet Chu will say it's great advertising biggrin.gif

also, when you finish it, can you send me a copy? though, id liek it if it were unproctected, i want to see how it works, since i cant seem to find the post on the gunner system(someone said you made one....).

dont worry, i never stole a map, ever...(you never see my name on any maps in B.net lol...)

I love these kinda of games, games with a challenge.

one Q:

will there be like multiple paths? liek if you kill a certain person, then the ending becomes different, like a differnt boss....

Report, edit, etc...Posted by Rantent on 2005-04-09 at 00:40:02
This gunner system?
So is there going to be a storyline behind this? Or just some action adventure kaboom map.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Tuxedo Templar on 2005-04-09 at 01:07:07
No, not that gunner system. This is the old Trigger Happy D one, but much more polished and user friendly.

This will be fairly light on story, focusing mainly on action and gameplay. Seeing as how it's a race against time, there wouldn't be much room for story anyway. Though I did put in an intro at the beginning to identify the setting and goal. I might add some ending thing as well, just to complete the package.

Not that it really needs any kind of story to it.

Well when you said, that "An earlier version of it, yes. I haven't shown anyone the latest version thus far. It's really starting to shape up into kickassness."

You had showed me it that day you said that. So i thought you didn't want anyone to know that i had seen it soo recently, unless you didn't show me the most recent version. or you had forgot you showed me like your forgetfulness actions you make tongue.gif.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Tuxedo Templar on 2005-04-09 at 02:55:29
Well technically you're right, since that wasn't the latest version I had at the time you saw it. Since then I've added even more still, so basically what I have now is about 3x what you saw then, minus all the latest tweaks and bug fixes.

As for OSF, I was thining about it, since this isn't exactly intended as a big bnet spreading map anyway. I'm sure others would benefit from using the sounds also, but even then it would require people to know to use OSF in the first place, which if this were to be downloaded from other sites or by casual players, would probably not happen.

If Chu makes an auto-update program for OSF sounds, that would help my decision significantly, though. Playing the map without music or sound would really be a shame, especially due to all the time I put into it, but I have to respect people with slow connections or just can't/don't want sounds for whatever reason.

P.S. I'll be releasing this unlocked.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Ultimo on 2005-04-09 at 03:09:57
This is going to be unprotected? crazy.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Rantent on 2005-04-09 at 03:45:12
The only way to make something truly revolutionary.
Tactical paths was released unlocked, but then several people said that I should lock it.
I think that most things should be unlocked, that's where I learned most of the mapping I know.
And now that I know what type of system you were talking about... This is going to rock my world! (I refrained from posting in all caps there)

Report, edit, etc...Posted by Tuxedo Templar on 2005-04-09 at 10:15:01
Yeah, I did in fact make a lot of progress on A&O, but I sorta stopped at the point when I realized it was going to require modding to do all that I wanted it to do. I even did a basic mod to try and implement a true gunner system of sorts, as well as an 83% complete version of the early (non-gunner) functionality. Both of which I might go ahead and post just for kicks when I release Rush, if it helps give anyone any ideas for their maps.

I hope someone hurries up and makes an Automodder so I can continue A&O. I suspect not, though, so I guess that's the end of A&O.

At least for Starcraft. wink.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Puni(F) on 2005-04-09 at 10:18:02
Are they seriously going to make a automodder? I think there waiting until next april fools. To say it is released, So they can just prank us again.
