Report, edit, etc...Posted by IsolatedPurity on 2005-04-13 at 01:36:38
Alright, I'm about to work on the private message system as well as the notice system. The difference between pm's and notices is that private messages are actual messages from members and notices are script generated messages. For example, in the current system, if someone sends you minerals, you get a pm. In Senv5, you'll get a notice (because it's script generated!).

So, whilst thinking of how this would work all out, I need a method of delivery. In SENv4, you get the last pm in your screen. Do you guys like this? Would notices get dominance over pm's? For example, if you have 1 pm and 1 notice, should the notice get displayed?
-or-
Should nothing get displayed, and instead, the header will change a bit to include a new box, something like:
6 New PM's
2 New Notices
-> 1 New Friend Request
-> 1 New Game Request

Where as, if you have 0 new messages and 0 new pm's, you don't see the box at all.

Let me know what you think is the perfect system.

Or you could do both and show your uber coding skillz, user customizable

But if i had to choose, the 2nd choice

I like the second one, will the text be links, like it says new pms, if you click on it it'll take you to inbox?

Of course!
Perhaps if you only have one new pm, it'll take you directly to that pm too. Yes, that would be nice, wouldn't it?

Customizing it on user perference is something that must of slipped my mind, however, I still need something as a primary system if I do choose to do two systems.

I'm highly leaning toward just a textual box for notifications, pm's on the screen generally annoy me.

Well, maybe have the control bar where you can access all your inboxes and profile and such, have two things up there [New Messages [#] [New Notices [#] and whenever you recieve a new one, have it change a bright neon color or something to make sure to get your attention.

I would prefer to see a popup page will ALL PM's and Notices sorted by earliest to latest. With the option to mark them as read, keep them as new, etc.

I woulden't like a pop up, hen you get a notice/pm, I would have to keep disabling my pop up blocker... But out of the both of them, I would prefer the second one over the first one.

I think it should have the little box that shows when you have a pm/notice and nothing at all when you have no pm or notice.

I'm with Chu on this one, I get a lot of PM's and also a lot of what we call script generated PM's (Notices) and I prefer to see them all in the same page(not the PM but the place where you see all PM's sent to you). You could add a feature saying display only this display only that.

similar to the second one.

CODE

--New Pms(4)--                               Newest Message is from warhammer40000
--New notices(2)--                           Why dont you try something like this IP?
--new game request(1)--                                                                 Open In New Window
--new friend request(1)--                                                                Open In Same Window
                                                                                        The Other Button

Cept with bold and underlining effects.... New Pms, notices, requests, newest message window thingies are all links. Of course the new pms and notices etc. just go to ur mailbox... something like that.....

I forgot what the other button is....

Do u get me on this?

PMs should take higher priority since they're really the ones that are suppose to be worth your time reading so those should be displayed ashow right now it is.

Notices should just have it's own link saying "You have 1 notice(s)"

thats what i mean. It shows the latest PM. In that latest PM, i say "Why dont you try something like this IP?"

You can go the extra step and make a drop down menu for each.
But that's taking it a bit far.

Well, Atleast don't make a new window pop up...

Reason:

Some 56kers might have to wait 10 minutes to just wait for the page to load.

And people with opup blockers, May have to keep accepting popups....

When you said "all in one page", I thought you were talking about the current system except changed so your page spammed with all the pm's when you have 5+ new so actual sen content is like, 2000 pixels away. Now I understand smile.gif. That's an interesting idea though, although, I don't think popup blockers would like it just like puni said. However, there will be the ability to see all notice types in one page... and pm's are naturally all in your inbox, although, there could easily be an option to view all new pm's at which point, it'll launch you in a new page with all new pms open and perhaps, even the ability to write to all of them from one page. Having a link to popup a response page is a possibility though, and that'll solve the popup blocker problem. I might actually do that happy.gif... but I was currently talking about automatic display of new messages and was in that mindset when reading all your posts, it tended to make everything not make any sense.
If I DID use invision's idea of showing the latest pm in a little notification box, it would have the ability to do a quick reply. However, no one seems to be suggesting invision's style and I think I want to avoid it as well.

One problem though is when you first get online and have 2+ messages, only one is displayed. So while you can see one, you would STILL have to go to your inbox to look at the other one ANYWAYS.
Besides, admin or critical notices are worth reading smile.gif.

At first, I didn't understand what you were getting at either... it's an interesting idea, however, space is limited and you wouldn't necessarily be able to see all of the pm anyways. A possibility though.

I can't make javascript required for normal functionality because not everyone has js enabled. JS is only there to enhance features, which is kinda sad. If it wasn't for stupid ass hackers...
At first, I didn't know if you were moose or rexy smile.gif.

So I guess I'm going with the little box to display new pm's and notices with increased functionality in every area. For example, if you WERE to click on a single message, the ability to reply would probably automaticlaly be there.

Instead of quoting anything from previous messages, which tends to get messy really fast, there might be some type of "view message thread" history option or something.

Any other ideas besides ones on delivery notification, go ahead and throw them at me.

56kers wouldn't have to wait very long at all. It's just text they are loading.

And every popup blocker allows you to make exceptions for webpages. Everyone I've seen that is.

I would display notices over PMs, since notices are system-generated and should be more important. Give admin/staff/mods the ability to send "Urgent PMs" which get displayed over notices.
