Staredit Network -> Terrain -> CoF: Beta Terrain

I've been working on a roleplaying type of map called "Cradle of Filth." I decided to do some extended terrain today on it, and this is how it came out…

  • Mud Path 1

  • Mud Path 2

  • Muddy Cave Enterance

  • Mana Mine

  • Platform Mine

  • Thin Bridge

Personal Note: Nothing too special… I will be adding more extended terrain as needed, but for now this is what I've got. If anyone has any ideas, questions, or suggestions, post them here and help me out.

I've added a sixth screenshot to the list—the Thin Bridge. The only reason I decided to add it was because of the blending job, which I find to be one of my best. If you look at the bottom side of the bridge, it came into contact with the dirt terrain. This arose a problem, but it also arose a possible solution, which I seemed to have dealt with quite professionally in my opinion—so check it out!

New platform type figure added—it is the seventh screenshot.

i like the cave entrance one with the cool bridge terrain idea but the other ones have kind of bad sprite placement. i just dont like the trees in the paths.

Yeah, this is my first sprite attempt, ever…

Now that I'm just getting back to SC, I'm getting to test all the new options in starforge.

you should just use the bush doodads. i used to do it like that but now i use those doodads to decorate the cliffs and it looks much better biggrin.gif

When in-game, you won't be able to see the sides of the cliffs—which is why I've placed the sprites like I did.

But it's all gravy, I'll work on it if need be.

I don't know how big your map is but at the rate you're going you'll be out of sprites in no time.

Chuiu, I don't plan on using them at the same right as shown above throughout the whole map, only certain areas that require them will be so sprite-intensive.

I thought they looked great! I can't blend very well sad.gif

If that's your first time, goodjob! biggrin.gif

First time with sprites—I've been blending terrain for quite some time now.

Don't you hate when people dont read...

Anyways I like them. The two-way cave looks like the ground has worn away into a tunnel, exposing a sliver of it. biggrin.gif

I'm not understanding entirely, there's some nice things there. like 1 or 2.
But isn't most of this just regular isom? You can do almost all of this in the
x-tra editor. And all i see are overused sprites.

Just making sure you're aware of a potential problem. smile.gif

No TRiGGa, you can't do most of this in Xtra.

I found a lost piece of blended terrain as well, which I will be adding as well.

Also, if you haven't read, TRiGGa, I'm still experimenting with sprite placement—so there's no need to even bring it up.

if you ask me on the first two that show the tree's i think you could make them not soo even. It looks too squarish with them like that, i know there sprites but it just doesn't look "natural".

The mud so close to the cliff is not able to be done in Xtra, only StarForge ISOM (or skilled tile placing).

Okay sorry, I think we just have different definitions of extended terrain, and now that you mention it, i do see the mud near highdirt. Nice blending but i highly doubt any normal person likem yself would notice it. It's just extra work for no reward.

Actually if you use StarEdit for terrain, you will notice it like a neon green blob in the middle of a black surface with lights and everything dancing around it....

I like these pics tho. I don't care what these fools say.

As you can all see, I added a new type of platform.

It has a temple ramp with an assortment of mixed temple and bridge terrain. It's sort of blocky, but easily covered by sprites.

ADDED: TRiGGa, the mud has a large use in the map. It's to create a darker pathway and add to the suspense of the gameplay while patrolling the cavern. At the same time, I wanted to keep the cavern semi-slender, so I had to slim down the width of the mud. It worked perfectly as to planned.

Just to let you know, in game people wont be able to look into the two way cave, I was going to have a similar idea be item slot in an rpg I'm making, but they couldn't see the items, so I changed it. ANother thing, the bridge you made can only have certain units cross it, if you use bigger units in your rpg, they might not make it across. I really liked the idea you had for the cave entrance, it needs a little work, but it's quite original. Good job, and good luck with finishing it! happy.gif

The bridge won't be a problem, the main characters can all cross it—I've tested it.

I don't see how there's much I can do to the enterance seeing as how it's such a small and petite figure of terrain. I think I did as best as possible seeing as how it's a 5x4 tile space.

Yea the cave entrance is the best. The mines could do with a bit more to them...maybe dirt would be better than jungle. But I really like that entrance gj.

The cave entrance is great looking, even with the sprites. Very nice job, I like the touch of the bridge on the lower edge too.

The thin bridge is blended flawlessly, I have never seen one done as well as that. The only bad spot is off to the very right underwater, and that doesn't even look too fake.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Fortune on 2005-04-16 at 16:13:12
Well, I'll try and work on everything some more—this is just one of the many things on my checklist.

ADDED: I reworked the muddy path's sprites and put more greenery in them. I also placed them where the bases of them can not be seen quite as easily—looks more natural.

Anyways, I posted them over the old ones.
