Staredit Network -> Terrain -> Rate my town!
Report, edit, etc...Posted by LethaL on 2005-04-16 at 17:47:49
Well, I finally got started seriously with some RPG terrain and wanted to see how decent my first town came out. This will be the starting town, and one of the most important landmarks in the game, so I wanted it to feel 'homey'.

Please feel free to rate it 1-10. And if it's below a 5, list why and what I can add/remove. cool1.gif thanks.

I give it a 6, because some of the sprites really don't fit. You should try something that works with the buildings, like placing it on top of buildings.

oh wow you got all that just from one look at a pic man i need to pay more attention to this stuff i still stand 7/10 smile.gif

That was kinda spammy Mario.

I stand with Turin on this, misplaced doodads = yuck!

5/10.

Nothing New or interesting though. It's just a bunch of terran building with civilian around with some trees... Nothing new... Really...

3/10

Turin and Fortune, which sprites don't fit (Besides the one with the sign on the cliff; I don't even know how that got there)?

and Juvenil, I wasn't trying to make anything new, I was asking if it seemed like a decent looking starting town for an RPG.

pretty normal take away those steel towers from the space doodads,
they dont really serve a purpose and dont add anything special to the town
try adding things that are more relevent, and expand on ideas you already have for it wink.gif

THAT is the kind of post I was looking for (Except there was no rating. tongue.gif)
Ok, so I'll remove the Space doodads, and set it to a 'theme'.

I thought those space doodads ont he rocks made it look kinda cool!
Although you do need some bottems on the tree in Picture one...
You can kinda walk right under it lol...

7/10
it is a cool looking town but it needs more buildings personaly
Report, edit, etc...Posted by LethaL on 2005-04-17 at 19:19:46
Actually, the tree in the first one isn't walkable because I used a terrain piece with a TINY bit of unwalkable terrain on it, so you have tou go around.

And there are more buildings than that; 12 total, actually. I just took screenshots of the more 'intense' parts of the town.

That's what I thought, but I guess it's not what most people think.

I think it's a bit sprite intensive for the first town.

Sprite count is 40, and what's the Sprite limit, 1700? If needed I'll take screenshots of the spriteless version and you'll see how ugly it looks.
BTW, I wanted the town to look lively and flourishing with greens, so I added in trees/bushes to accomplish that.

I'd give it a 4/10, Just because it is so small, And there is very little space through out it.

Those 3 pictures aren't the entire town.

Hey lethal, could you tell us the area of your town? (aka lengthxwidth) That way, people can better judge if the town is a good size for a starting town.

I think you should remove some sprites. "Less is more" as they say. Also, I think you should change the random billboard into a fancy blizzard billboard (they're watching you ohmy.gif)
Report, edit, etc...Posted by LethaL on 2005-04-20 at 17:50:27
The billboard wasn't even supposed to be there, so I removed it (Why bother putting a Blizzard one in?). the town's size is roughly 46x37
(1702 units²); doesn't sound like much but it's a decent sized portion of the map (The map is 256x210).

Nah, it sounds like a good size. I mean, 8x12 (96x²) is one screen area right? A lot of RPG towns are about 1.5 times the area (144x²) than that, which isn't that big. Yours is about ten times bigger than their wimpy shacks! So that is quite a large city. I'm slightly wondering if it's a big TOO large though.. closedeyes.gif hmmm

Just noting that an SC screen is actually 12x20 squares, or (240x^2). So his is actually a perfect size, I think.

Oh, my bad happy.gif. So then newb towns are usually 360x², making his 8 times as large as theirs. Well, it still sounds a bit large to me, but since I haven't played in the town, I truly cannot make a extremely accurate conclusion.

Edit: His town has the area of 1702x² (46x37).
