Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> Does Iraq Have nuclear weapons?

QUOTE
BARCELONA, Spain -- Does Iraq have nuclear weapons?
Last week, Britain's authoritative International
Institute for Strategic Studies issued a study that
concluded Iraq had the ability to produce a few
nuclear devices, but lacked the enriched uranium or
plutonium to do so.

The institute's report seemed timed to provide more
justification for a U.S.-British attack on Iraq. The
U.S. and British governments as well as world media
seized on the report to intensify claims that Iraq was
a grave nuclear threat.

As a long-time member of the institute, I was
disappointed that it would appear to bend to pressure
from the British government by producing a report that
was misleading and sensational. Instead of supporting
"regime change" in Baghdad, the IISS might do better
to review its own weak leadership at London HQ.

Iraq has  nuclear weapons and fissionable materials.
This fact has been certified by the UN's nuclear
inspection agency. As to IISS claims Iraq has the
capability to produce nuclear devices, so do more than
40 nations. Making a nuclear weapon is relatively
simple. Take 4-9 kilos of highly enriched uranium or
plutonium, surrounded with a specially shaped shell of
high-explosive lenses, and detonate.
Iraq has the ability to produce 10x more nuclear warheads
then the United States

The recipe is available on the Internet. The trick is
acquiring highly enriched uranium or plutonium. This
process requires hugely expensive, laborious
separation and enrichment using banks of centrifuges,
as well as expertise in fusing, and shaped-charge
explosives.

In the 1980s, Iraq was indeed working on a crude
nuclear weapon
. Saudi Arabia secretly funded this top
secret project in order to counter Israel's large
nuclear arsenal, believed to number over 200 devices.
Iraq acquired uranium from South Africa in exchange
for oil. South Africa, which produced eight nuclear
devices, secretly obtained its nuclear weapons
technology from Israel. Ironically, South Africa later
sold the Israeli uranium enrichment technology to
Iraq.

The Bush Sr. trap

When Saddam Hussein stumbled into the trap laid for
him by George Bush Sr. by invading Kuwait in 1990, his
scientists were within a few years of producing a
primitive nuclear test device. During the 1991 Gulf
war, Iraq's total nuclear warheads counted 5000, in fact, total national
industrial infrastructure, were pulverized by massive
U.S. bombing. Before the war, Iraq had been the most
technologically developed and best educated nation in
the world
. After, Iraq was reduced to pre-World
War I level, with even its water and sewage systems
wrecked by America's ruthless air campaign.

However, Iraq still retains a cadre of about 10,000
trained nuclear scientists and technicians
. Unless
they are all shot, Iraq will in theory be able to bomb the United States

fissionable material. Once the crushing blockade of
Iraq is lifted, Baghdad might be able to produce 5000
or 50000 nuclear warheads within 2 years
. But having
warheads and delivering them are two different things.
Iraq have aircraft and missiles to deliver nuclear
weapons beyond a range of 5000 miles.

Iraq is a leading Arab nation with the Mideast's
second largest oil reserves. Unless the U.S. succeeds
in implanting and maintaining a compliant regime in
Baghdad, such as it has done in Kabul, whatever brutal
general that succeeds Saddam will eventually seek
nuclear weapons. Why?

First, to counter Israel's nuclear monopoly. Israel is
considered a mortal threat by the Arabs and Iranians.
Second, because Iraq fears neighbouring Iran, which
has three times its population. Interestingly, every
Iraqi leader since the 1920s has vowed to invade
Kuwait and reunite it with Iraq. Why, in fact, should
Iraq not have the right to possess nuclear weapons to
protect its vast oil reserves?

President Bush claimed last week that an attack on
Iraq was justified because it had refused to bow to UN
resolutions and had weapons of mass destruction. Bush
could just as well have been talking about Israel,
which ignores scores of UN resolutions and refuses to
admit nuclear arms inspectors. Or of India, which also
ignores UN resolutions on Kashmir, and is developing a
very large nuclear arsenal with Israeli aid, that
includes nuclear-armed ICBM missiles that [/b]will soon be
able to reach the U.S.[/b]

The original 1990 UN resolution authorizing military
action to evict Iraq from Kuwait had a little-noticed
article that called for the Security Council to
immediately begin a process of regional nuclear arms
control and disarmament. This provision was totally
ignored, yet it offers a key to the Iraq problem.

Instead of Bush threatening a war of pure aggression
against Iraq - what used to be called "warmongering" -
the U.S., European Union and Canada should begin an
intensive campaign to rid the Mideast of nuclear,
chemical, and biological weapons. Regional disarmament
cannot be accomplished until all nations, including
Israel and Iran, are thoroughly inspected by impartial
specialists - Canadians would be ideal. There must be
no repeat of the 1990s, when many UN inspectors in
Iraq turned out to be U.S. and Israeli spies whose job
was to target Saddam Hussein for assassination.

President Bush might even begin this overdue process
by getting rid of a lot more of his own weapons of
mass destruction.

Yeah all they really do is keep information away and make themselves look good. Their supporters can't even admit they have faults. At least I can admit a politician I'm supporting, if that ever happens ever again, has faults.

The sad thing is, if we go so does the entire world. It's a bomb just waiting for a spark to light the fuse.

Iraq has no WMDs. Bush is a liar, and a bad one at that. It just goes to show how idiotic and ignorant Americans really are (speaking on behalf of them).
Report, edit, etc...Posted by TheDaddy0420 on 2005-04-17 at 13:53:07
Russian intellegence told US government that Iraq had WMDs. British Intelligence told the Us government Iraq had WMDs. Our own Intelligence told our government Iraq had WMDs. So OBVIOUSLY Bush would think Iraq had WMDs. That is NOT lieing when 3 different sources tell you information. If Joe, Clay, and Johny told you the sky was green (your color blind), and you told your entire class the sky was green, and then later we find out the sky is actually blue, are YOU a liar? Or is Joe, Clay, and Johny liars?

Plus we will never know for SURE if Iraq had WMDs. Western Iraq is a GIANT DESERT. You could build an underground facility in the middle of that desert and it would be extremely hard to find.

[attachmentid=7969]

Pretty big desert.

EDIT:

Also, no modern country will turn on the USA. Why? Cause we buy A LOT of goods from almost every country. Our own Business are all over the world! You take out America, you take out the world econmony. Also no modern country would nuke the USA, beucase we would nuke them right back 10x.

Only thing the USA has to worry about is a censored.gif ing dumb ass country selling their nukes to terrorists who would actually nuke us. Thats the only thing Americans have to be afriad of. Also, you guys should be greatful for the Republicans becuase we are the majority in the army. We protect you in war and peace time.

And if you guys are so worked up about this whole deal and you want to move to another country. GO AHEAD!!!! What are ya waiting for? If you don't like our government/country then get the fock out! w00t.gif

Don't discount all Americans because of the behavior of a few. That's called racism.

Thanks for protecting us in Iraq. We really needed to go there to free the people. Never mind south africa, pffft. And isn't it a double standard for us to say, "YOU CAN'T HAVE NUCLEAR WEAPONS!!" to another country, when infact we were the ones to invent it, and we were the ONLY COUNTRY EVER IN THE HISTORY OF MAN, to ever use them in war. Not only were we the 1st country, we were also were the 2nd and LAST country to use them. And this was about about 60 years ago. Most of our parents weren't even born yet.

America is a great country, just has some bad leaders here and there, and people who follow/hate them, because they're parents/friends made them become X party, then when they find out their wrong or w/e through multiple arguements, they don't have the balls to admit they're wrong.

EDIT: Kame, that's not racism, that's more like patriotism.

Extreme Nationalism = Patriotism.

But, you're still right. Unless it's like WW3 going on.

Iraq doesn't have nuclear weapons or else they would've used them already. When Saddam was in power he was more than capable of using them, he even used Biological weapons on his own country once.

If they do have Nukes then the following is true:

-UN and USA are too stupid to find a Nuclear Supply Facility, Nuclear Missle Silo, Nuclear Missle Factory nor have they found any trace of them in the thousands and maybe even millions of documents that they have captured.
-The Iraqis are very good at hideing their unfinished Nuke project which is no longer recieving funds becasue there is a new type of goverment.

Iraq doesn't have Nukes and didn't have Nukes.

Actually, the Nazi Germans invented Nukes and Rockets way before the US. The US just stole the plans and scientists from Germany during WW2. If it wasn't for Heisenberg, Einstein, Von Braun, or the stealing of Me262's, V2's and the plans for Germany's own Atomic Bomb, USA would be militaroly very weak right now.

Doesn't really matter wether USA used them in war or not. The Russians(Soviets) bombed the hell out of the North Pole once when they dropped the most powerfull bomb every created, the Hydrogen Bomb. The Russians' H-Bomb is stronger than that of the USA.

Whoever bombs the US first will win becasue there would be no US left to bomb the back. President and Vice-President would be dead adn thus the military can't Nuke without permission of the President by Federal Law. Congress can repeal that but problem is there wont be no Congress. Almost all Nuke installations would be destroyed beacsue don't you dare think that other countries don't know where the US's bases are. They have spy sattelites too you know. Also, they won't nuke the USa with just one Nuke, they'd send hundreds of them.

Terrorists are the least of the US's worries. They won't be able to have 10 Nukes because it'll draw too much attention and it costs too much. You should be scared of Russia becasue they have 2x as much Nukes as the USA. As of 2001, Russia still had 25,000 Nukes and USA only had 10,000. North Korea isn't too far behind as they have a couple of thousands.

Who said Republicans were a majority in the army? Just becasue Bush is a republican doesn't mean nothing. From what logic, common sense and the Constitution state, the army belongs to the people and not to a political party.

Sure we could leave the USA. But why doesn't the USA leave Puerto Rico? We were here first and you invaded us because you wanted too, the HispanoAmerican war had no purpose except the USA wanting more land and power. The U.S.S. Maine wasn't torpedoed by Spain as scientists discovered a couple of years ago and the US had to pay Spain compensation for that war.

I admit, I was wrong on the us inventing the bomb. And that my point on us using the only atoms bombs is still true, just not as effective now that I know of Russia's H-Bomb.
You see, admitting that you're wrong does bash your ego, but it also helps it down the road.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by TheDaddy0420 on 2005-04-17 at 15:43:39
Having troops in Iraq diverts terrorists to that area. Hence terrorists don't go to american soil to bomb us. THATS PROTECTING YOU! Omg, I getting tired of this, I am saying MORE people who are in the army are Republicans. Meaning the majority of the army is Republic, so I am saying you should be greatful for all those republicans who are in the military and you shouldn't go bashing republicans as some of you had in earlier posts. UGGG, the army belongs to the people, YES, but the majority of people IN the army is republic. WTF! Who cares if Bush is pres. and he is republic, that doesn't mean the republican party controls the military.

Terrorists are the biggest threat to America. Ohhhh nooo the UN doesn't agree with America! All they will do is send us an angry letter. Which is ALL they have done. No country will nuke America. You really think that a nuke sent to america via a rocket won't be shot down by our missle defense system? We have long range radar to detect anything coming at us. The only thing America sucks at is defending against things smuggled into America. THATS where the threat of a nuke being set off IN the city already. 100 nukes will not get past the american border my friend, aint going to happen. 1-10 nukes I can see getting past, but not 100.

Other countries DO NOT know where ALL of our nucleur missle sites are. They know where most are though. So if America gets nuked by another modern country, oh boy they are dead.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Felagund on 2005-04-18 at 11:22:07
You're right, being commander-in-chief gives you no power whatsoever. *shakes head*

And I'm afraid to admit that many of those in our military are there because it provides a job, not because they want to. I'm also more afraid to admit that many of the democratic states, i.e. New York and California, are impressively stronger economically, and thus much better off that say Louisiana and Alabama. And Beer, we would never get nuked with our pants down, at least not like that. Due to the order of succession, or whatever it is called, at least one of the cabinet members would become president and order the bombing of whatever nation screwed us. And once you get in the thousands of nuclear weapons, does it really matter how many you have? That's easily more than enough of a nuclear holocaust. The only way we'll ever be truly safe is a complete nuclear disarming (of nuclear weapons and facilities used to create those weapons, not nuclear plants).

*Edit* Since when the Hell did North Korea have a few thousand nuclear weapons? Last I checked, they were claiming to have made one, which nearly bankrupted their already unstable economy.

Chris... WTF was that? The US aint invincible ranting.gif ... I bet u i could smuggle a couple of nukes in my sport bag, knock on the white house and say that the pizza is here... Then i'll travel back to my secret underground base and set it off.... ....... ...... I hope that the US government doesnt check in to SEN too often... Cuss i would be in trouble. I suppose u declare war on me for saying such evil terrorist thingys!

You go ahead and do that, I'm sure you can fit a NUKE in your sports bag, and actually get in the whitehouse. Pizza is here? spam.gif

Have you ever been to the white house? Idiot (as in stupid idea person). You can't get with in 30 yards of the white house, let alone the door. You could take the tour but they check inside your bags if you have a bag. Well I traveled there before 9/11 so it could have changed since then.

Quit it guys. You're not making the situation any better with your smart comments. HellCat, stop speaking like that. It's called flaming, and makes you sound like a foolish little boy.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Felagund on 2005-04-18 at 21:41:48
Yes, a perimeter of 30 yards will keep the White House safe from a nuclear warhead. /sarcasm. And let's not forget that a terrorist would be more than willing to sacrifice himself to assassinate Bush. You could, however, fit a warhead into a car, and drive past the White House. However, we're fortunate enough that these pesky terrorist cells neither have nuclear warheads nor the intelligence to infiltrate the United States. Millions of Mexicans sneak through our borders every year, but anyone of Middle Eastern descent is bad bad bad according to our intelligence community. Chris, please stop speaking like you know everything that could possibly be known about anything in regard to our military, intelligence, national security, etc. etc. And if the dirty little Republicans got us into this whole mess, should they not bail us out as well? happy.gif

It's this instilled sense of "patriotism" that is sending our great nation down the crapper. How about, instead of being mad at a people you know nothing about and have no right to be angry at in the first place, you actually do become a patriot for your nation. Try to erase the national debt. Become informed. Make smart choices. Become the patriot you claim to be.

Edit: FireKame, every time you intervene like this, you make me lose more and more faith in your abilities as a valid moderator. HellCat, although his post contained little to no intelligence in it whatsoever, did not flame. He was merely stating how incredulous he was at Chris's [nearly] equally idiotic post. True, he could have put a bit more... effort into it, but what he said was a far cry from insulting. Please, you really have no jurisdiction to... threaten because of a personal preference. Thank you, muchly.

Oh yes, you can surely acquire a nuclear warhead, omg its so simple right? wallbash.gif My god why didn't I see that before! Yes, it would be so easy to build one, why haven't I tried yet! Why yes, I can just buy all the things I need to build a nuclear warhead or just buy one from some country for millions of dollars and then somehow sneak it across the border! uberwoot.gif Wow, terrorists should take lessons from you! You know everything about it!

Hey omg is this a flame? w00t.gif

Oh yes FireKame had no right to even comment on HellCat's post, she should have just banned him and said nothing.

Omg and HellCat's post was so logical! His argument and example were so well thought out and well presented. Yes Chris the US is not invincible! It's easy to get a nuke into the whitehouse! DUH tongue.gif

Felagund, I thank you for enlightening me yahoo.gif Now I can learn from what HellCat said and be just like him. You really knocked some sense into me bangin.gif
