Staredit Network -> UMS Production -> World of Stacraft I
Report, edit, etc...Posted by PCFredZ on 2005-04-20 at 15:17:36
There are several reasons I want to reopen a chapter of UMS mapping that many of you never knew was open in the first place.

"World of Starcraft" was an idea I had when World of Warcraft was barely in its open beta testing stage. Think about it: like Ghost, but with every unit you've ever commanded charging through an enemy's base, to control the spells you've ordered your minions to use, time and time again, to aid you in your galactic conquest of the SC universe. WoS was to recreate the SC universe, through RPG instead of RTS. Such an idea was not the first of its kind; Marine Boot Camp was a very addictive map that took the player through the life of a Terran Marine, and, if he sucked, the death as well. Like Marine Boot Camp, WoS stresses the strength of the individual as well as the group. Few of us ever pause before sacrificing that one lone Ghost to nuke an entire enemy base, and nobody with a sane mind would ever feel sympathy for ordering 2 dozen Zerglings to lead the charge into a group of Firebats to distract them from the main Hydralisk attack force. In WoS, YOU are that one life, who could turn around the outcome of a battle, or make no difference whether alive or dead.

So what went wrong with this hope-filled vision? WoS was my first major mapping project, and that was not good. All pros start at n00bs sometime, but any sloppy work on a map branded such a title, "World of Starcraft", should not be allowed. Even then I had put much effort into making sure the map would be free of bugs, glitches, and the likes; but my abilities then could not make guarantees.

I have always been impatient; with only a single mission and a single race (Terrans) completely done in WoS1, I started WoS2. This latter piece of work had even more innovations than the first, such as combining RTS and RPG into a single map that all players could participate in. Unfortunately, little things like item cost and too complex an interface prevented the project from gathering the steam it needed to continue.
Personally, I would not want to tarnish such a name as World of Starcraft, something that should represent all the talent and creativity of SC mappers combined. Thus, simply patching up little things in the map are not sufficient to restore fully the grand hopes I had for WoS to life.

I will start one step at a time. The foundations of both WoS1 and WoS2 were not established as solid as they should have been, so savaging the bits and pieces of them already present here on SEN would provide little help.

And thus I announce a resurrection, the new World of Stacraft.

weee.... World of Starcraft... I see it now......... the masses of World of Warcraft gamers leave their cost every month accounts to go out and play starcraft again just to play the free "World of Starcraft" tongue.gif , hehe.... well maybe not... but good luck anyways, sounds like it might be fun cool1.gif .

Hmm... I liked the original World of Starcraft, so I'm sure I'll enjoy this one too. Good luck with your project. Do you need a copy of the original WoS map? I think I have one. It's either WoS or WoS2.

No thanks, if I posted it on SEN, I'll be able to find it. However, I know that I protected my WoS2 releases, which might be a problem... WoS1 is definitely being remade, but I think WoS2's triggerwork is clean enough for me to just continue the project.

I just hope I've got it on a floppy... pinch.gif

Good luck, sounds like my RPG...you are a regualr unit, and then the Bosses send you on misions, and you have a "squad". Then you are suppose to find high ground, call for backup, build a trench(bunker). ya, it was fun worknig on it, for a little while...

Can you use SCMIE to salvage some of it?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by axblader on 2005-04-20 at 22:30:11
i think so, though ive never used SCMIE, i think i migth of tried it one time but then it messed up my map.
though the triggering isnt hard, just the moving parts are a pain. also the storyline too. il can Remake some of the triggers if you want...though i will try to make it more eficient, it didnt have a good action thingy(you had to move your civ onto a becaon...i will use transports this time). though like i said, i never finishd much of it, the call for back was really rigged lol, it jsut gave you like 1 invincible scout bangin.gif

i guess i can start working on but im pretty busy right now. my teacher gave my 3 projects due on Friday, and i have a performance tomorrow at school(band) so i have to finis hthem today! crybaby.gif

Omg..
I know I left when you started working on WoS2 and I cheered you on for a thread or two, lmao, but you RELEASED IT? Omg! I didn't even know......

Where can I find it -.^

I loved the first one, even if you do, claim it wasn't as great as you hoped, it was good enough for me biggrin.gif

Need to get both of those maps... lol, and.. If you need help with The Ressurection of WoS, tell me tongue.gif [testing wise of course ;P]

Anyways,

Good luck! Hopefully, this time I won't take another 3 month afk time. lol

Blah, I'll just call this one WoS3, since I did originally start a WoS3, which didn't work out well.

Currently working on terrain, then resources, then unit placement, and LASTLY the triggers.

I can unprotect anything if you so desire.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Deathknight on 2005-04-21 at 15:15:47
There's no need to copy anything, just redo it. You'll do better.

I doubt so Desperado. If you really think so I can protect a blank map for you to try unprotecting.

pinch.gif PROEdit's normal compression just erased the entire map except for 1 horizontal band of Water. huh.gif Looks like it reverted the map to its first save!

How long do you expect this map is going to take you to complete?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by PCFredZ on 2005-04-23 at 21:29:30
Considering that I've got to start from scratch, I might just resort to fixing up the original WoS1...

I'd fix WoS2 if I could, but I don't even have an unlocked copy of the map. pinch.gif D'oh!

That didn't answer my question, PCFredZ...

I asked when this map is going to be released, if you did not hear me the first time.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Daigotsu on 2005-04-23 at 23:02:53
Was the World of Starcraft the map where you start off as a unit like any other unit and do some missions and stuff? Just confused wether I'm thinking of the right one.

Your topic title claims "a complete remake"...

Yeah, that was probally before his entire map was ruined... it's kind of annoying to have to restart the entire thing. Well, good luck with what ever you decide to do.

Eh, I played WoS1 (the original) on B.net last night, it was a lot better than I expected. However, the Cannot Create More Units error still messed things up quite a bit... Jeez, I don't know what to do. Forget about a release date, I'll work on the map when I physically can work on it. Right now I also have a programming course to finish, maybe I should pause the project pro tempore.

Apologies to all those who have much anticipation towards this project, but I'm sure I'll be done when you all forget about it again. biggrin.gif

About the CCMU error, have you tried creating them somewhere (like in a large open space), and then moving them to that location?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by PCFredZ on 2005-04-24 at 14:25:48
It's not that kind of error, this is the one where you can't even build buildings any more because there are too many units present on the map.

Sounds fun, good luck with this project

In case if anyone's wondering why there hasn't been a progress report...

I'm trying to finish up a C programming course I'm taking.

I'm a procrastinating n00b, I've got 3 more weeks of progress to finish up everything by May 14th.

Sit tight. blushing.gif

Phew, now that the programming stuff is over with, I can finally restart this.

Hmm, what should I call the map?

It's really going to be the third map in the series, but since WoS1 and WoS2 never got past beta (WoS1 was pretty close), I'm going have to listen to some feedback.
