Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> Best and Worst President(s)?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by MillenniumArmy on 2005-04-20 at 19:47:22
There was a thread about this long time ago and i feel like bringing it back, especially since now i know much more about who some of our good/bad presidents are.

And when you list the best/worst presidents, list why.

Best Presidents:
Teddy Roosevelt - brought USA into world affairs and brought us into a world power.

Franklin Roosevelt - Restored the USA from the great depression and got us going better than ever.

Worst President:
Herbert Hoover - Doesn't care much about the USA. When we underwent the great depression, he didnt do jack :shit: about it. He said "the nation will heal by itself over the natural process of time" (yea, my ass). Luckily, FDR came to power and restored us.

Most overrated president:
Bill Clinton - Yes, the economy was doing well under his presidency but that doesnt mean he's automatically a good president. He just happened to be our president during our golden age. Ok, he's not bad, but just because our economy was doing well doesn't automatically mean clinton was an awesome president. It's mainly us, the people and businesses, that made our economy so well, not clintion

Most underrated presidents:
George W Bush - Ok, i can think of one reason why you guys hate bush: Iraq. Guys, he's maybe not the best president but he sure as hell aint the worst president. His decision with Iraq may not be the best to some people's point of views but we've had MUCH worse presidents. Their actions are even worse, like Herbert Hoover.

Richard Nixon - Just because he resigned doesn't mean he's one of the worst presidents. Just because he resigned doesn't mean all of his great actions just simply vanished. Nixon was the first president EVER to recognize china and actually try and negotiate with them over vietnam issue. He also went over to russia and negotiated with the Russian leader there. If it weren't for those actions, who knows, we might've had at least multiple nuclear wars already. Nixon didn't make our "withdrawal" from Vietnam seem as bad as most people perceive it. Infact, he got a huge party and tons of support cuz of that.

Your topic starter is so long I almost skipped it without reading biggrin.gif. Well I have my opinions(hehehe....here we go...). I think Abraham Lincoln is forgotten too much. I mean, without him come on now, we would still be driving slaves in fields(not that people don't do it today disgust.gif Hmm, I also must say Carter was a good one. He DID get us through the whole Korean and Vietnamese wars and such. At least I think it was him...or was that Johnson... pinch.gif. Well I'm usually good with history...anyways, those are my two favorite. I disagree with people who think Bush is bad. He didn't do anything wrong. Unless someone wants to name soemthing? Invading Iraq: he had otehr reasons....unless you guys want to WALK to school instead of going in a car(for those of us who can). Some of his decisions are odd...but he isn't a BAD president. Anyways that's my opinion. I'll wait for the flames? JK laugh.gif

No, I think the most overrated president is George W. Bush with the majority of the American people. Then again, I tend not to care what they say because they don't really know why they like him. He has allowed spending to increase phenomenally while still cutting taxes... may I say what the fudge? ranting.gif

And people wonder why our economy is bad!

And really I couldn't care less about oil. I'd rather have hydrogen cell energy already. It will be significantly cheaper and incomprehensibly better for the environment. I disagree with probably all but one or two of his stances on issues. In my opinion he has only hurt our nation and has done nothing whatsoever to ensure its future.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by MillenniumArmy on 2005-04-20 at 20:26:33
Ok, but compare what he's done with what some of our past presidents have done... You will see that Bush isnt bad at all when compared to some of our bad past ones.

Besides everyone will think our current presidents are always the worst. Back when we had Bill Clinton, everyone was ranting at how bad he was.

I can't really judge as I'm not American but...

The names that stand out are Lincoln, Washington and Clinton, although I know others.

I bet most people here couldn't even name any British Prime Ministers besides Tony Blair and Margaret Thatcher off the tops of their heads...

I personally dont see how Clinton stands out. I mean, what good significant things has he, in person, done? Making the economy great isn't a reason. It just so happened at that time period that computer businesses were booming. I dont think Clinton made any of those computers.

Best President, William Henry Harrison. He died so fast he couldn't screw anything up. tongue.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by CaptainWill on 2005-04-20 at 20:33:10
Your trade deficit was a lot lower under Clinton. We can attribute your current negative trade balance
to the war in Iraq and the fact that the country appears to be buying up as much oil as possible.

Sure, Clinton may not have done much, but he appeared to be a laissez-faire economist rather than a hands-on one. It worked for him, but I guess we can't call him great because of it.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by TheDaddy0420 on 2005-04-20 at 21:16:21
Yea, Bush has made some sketchy decesions, but that doesn't mean hes bad. Did you guys know President Roosevelt (WW2) was secretly planning to take America to war(before we got attacked+Britian)? mmmmmm. Well anyway Clinton gave Bush a shit whole economy, the real golden age of America I think was during and right after WW2 beucase thats when our economy was booming.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Felagund on 2005-04-20 at 21:22:42
How did Clinton give Bush a shit economy? It was outstanding during his "reign." And what good decisions has Bush made?

Whoa! I don't support George W Bush Jr. because he spent all the money Clinton saved! Oh yeah, but hoover is worse.... I heard he slept through a hurricane or monsoon once... tongue.gif

U know, i also 4got to mention Harding as one of the worst presidents as well.

Why? Cuz after wwI, he encouraged lots of spending and all that stuff (i think), which eventually led to the great depression.

Please tell what good he has done?? He has done more bad than good. HE IS OVVERRATED... To many people liked him for what a bad president he was. He was not the worst president; he is just really far down on the list.

If not Iraq then what has he done bad? I actually think he is a good president. We haven't slipped FURTHER into debt. biggrin.gif Meh, anyways name something he has done that is bad instead of saying he isn't a good president. Please?

So you're saying that Iraq was a good decision?

Best presidents:

Franklin Roosevelt: He led America out of the Great Depression and WWII.

John F. Kennedy: He encouragd the space program and dealt with the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Worst presidents:

George W. Bush: Started a war in Iraq, allowed terrorists like Osama Bin Laden to go free. Insists on useless tax cuts.

Overrated presidents:

Abraham Lincoln: He freed the slaves more to disrupt the Confederacy than for freedom.

He may have probably done more bad than good, but whatever they are, at least he has good reasonings (but just because they're "good" doesn't mean they are necessarily agreeable). And ur right he's not the worst president. But everyone's been claiming he was the worst when he infact isn't, so tahts why i said he's underrated.

he was beast. Well not rly but watever he was cool

Well Captain to be honest with you yes I do think it was a good choice. I would rather be comfortable knowing I am safe than to wonder day by day if we will be bombed. Is that only me or do most people like being safe? Hmm...And Osama, oh my gosh Bush didn't "let him go". Yes we knew where he was but it didn't mean we could get him. We knew where Hitler was, we never got him did we? Well then. I am still waiting for reasons Bush is bad. One last point. I wonder if anybody remembers the Vietnam war? We lost many more than 1,000 troops. And it was for a GREAT cause wasn't it....didn't think so. We lost anyways. So Iraq is no different, except our task is complete. So before you rip Bush rip the presidents who were involved with the Vietnam War. Well it wasn't a war but....you know the story.

Heh, it's amusing to see Chris spaz out with the defense for ol' George there.

Actually, we have named stuff that he has done that is bad. Perhaps you merely chose to ignore the facts presented, in which case (which it appears to be), you look like an ignorant fool.

Let's start with, most importantly, the war in Iraq, the increased national debt, harmful tax cuts, and increased spending. I also think he is a religious nut (or just using it as a useful background to increase his standing with Christian America). Some of his ideas may be decent enough, but it's in the execution that I loathe him. No Child Left Behind? A laughable act that has harmed the public school system. Lastly, and perhaps ranking up there with the most important of things about him, I disagree with almost all of his stances on issues (and the ones that I agree with him on, I think he's lying as to not appear a total nincompoop). I firmly support stem cell research, pro-choice (which deserves another discussion, but not here so I can explain exactly where I stand on this), and homosexual rights. That is to name a few.

Had YOU been paying attention I said other than Iraq. Iraq is an opinion, it doesn't go either way. Good and bad things have come from it(although good outweighs bad VERY heavily...). Debt? HAH. What a laugh. Debt isn't caused by Bush. Congress makes most decisions, so blame them. he hardly put us in debt anyways...not more than Davis(ahh...Davis...). Tax....well I don't mind it. Wasn't helping us anyways. What is wrong with being religious? You aren't making fun of them are you...hmmmmmmm. wink.gif We all know where this is going to lead....

To sum up the Iraq issue in note-form:

Good things to come out of the war:
- Saddam Hussein, a dictator, toppled from power.
- America now has a long term oil supply that should reap benefits in the future - KA CHING!
- Iraq's elections went pretty well and the current leadership is not an Islam-based one.
- Iraq was neutralised as a potential threat to neighbouring countries.

Bad things to come out of the war:
- 1000+ American troops dead alone, never mind the rest of the coalition.
- Severe insurgency in Iraq. Iraqis and Westerners murdered by fanatic fundamentalist groups.
- Iraq is in ruins and will take many years to rebuild.
- The conflict has rocked the Middle-East, causing countries to raise oil prices for now.
- A coalition presence in Iraq will be necessary for years to come. Iraq's military will not be up to the task of controlling insurgency for some time. They are currently relying on ragged militia forces which aren't up to the task.
- The war was started over false allegations that Iraq had WMDs.

After looking at that, can you really say that the Iraq war has been beneficial? Things seem to be falling into place now, but you have to look at why we went in - the war was illegal and somebody has been telling huge whoppers to get people to support the war.
