Togikon's Shield Protector is a stolen program. Togikon merely changed the strings in the About menu and the file name. The original author is ACC_Adapter, who ironically recieves a mention as having been a "great help" in making the program. The program is however obviously stolen, as it is exactly the same size as the real program. I thought perhaps ACC_Adapter allowed togikon to update his program, but apparently that's not the case if the files are exactly the same size, down to the byte. I request that this file be removed from the downloads database immediately.

[EDIT] Here is a link to the original program: http://s95361327.onlinehome.us/clanunknown/scmprotector.zip

Considering Proedit + uberate owns it and it's getting a year old, is it that big a deal?

Well, we're always fighting piracy. (Although I believe many of us still download music.) angel_not.gif

This isn't really piracy, this isn't really an issue. It's just like one person stealing anothers map. Inconsequential except to the victum.

It's an issue. I'd be pissed if someone stole my scripts / code.
I'll deal with it soon... I also have to edit another fill someone reported as stolen material.

*Hopes that other file is the one he thinks it is cool1.gif *

If we can't keep stolen stuff off b.net we might as well keep it off this site biggrin.gif .

Normally yes, but it's just a program made for the general public. He's not selling it, it's not like he's losing popularity over it, and it's also not like he didn't recieve ANY credit at all. If it were me, I would just say "meh" and ignore it.

Unless, of course, the program had meaning outside of just that.

Everything in life is stolen.

Ideas, things, life, you name it. The only things created are innovations (which are stolen ideas from inventions).

Besides, you aren't the creator of shield protector. Why are you making such a fuss about it? Are you trying to taddle-tale? You are worse then tokigon...

ACC_Adapter would have done something about it if he was truly bothered by this "stealing."

This is all besides the fact I can find no information or links from search engines about a "ACC_Adapter". As far as I can tell, he doesn't even exist!

My point is that it should be left alone because the file is back from the days where the old cadre were submitting much files to bulk up DLDB. If the listed author is wrong, then it was an honest mistake, not a personal attempt at map/program theft.

The program itself, he claims, was hexed to show the wrong name. Which, in fact, is VERY difficult considering that some of the string lengths are different. But after look at them again, I seriously doubt the credibility of either individual.

ToGikon uses a convinient shorthand of "ToGi" in many places. And his email is rather wierd.

And ACC_Adapter uses SCM and not SCM Protector as the program name all over. Plus he has THREE different version numbers in the program itself. 2 of them are in the "About" dialogue.

Well, we don't know if "ACC_Adapter" handed off the program to Togikon or not. I think he should come here and tell us if its supposed to have his name.

It was not one of the best protections anyway.

Can we say: "Who the hell really cares? Case Closed!" now?

lol.

I've never actually seen anyone claim ownership over the program. Togikon isn't invincible to unprotection. Its a lot easier to unprotect that compared to proedit.

Yea but sometimes when makers make things, they dont do it for customer or personal satisfaction; they do it for the fame (just like most map makers out there).

So if ACC_Adapter really made this just to be "famous" then we should be seeing some complaints from him...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by -BW-Map_God on 2005-04-28 at 14:25:14
Unless of course he has never heard of this site or even seen his stolen file so he has no idea he has any reason to complain... but yea, its outdated, not that big of a deal. The guy who reported this should drag the Adapter guy over here and then if he complains and can prove it maybe the author name can be fixed or something.

I find this issue quite ironic.
A map protecting progam designed to keep people from stealing (modify to remove original owner/creator and add their own name to it and make it their property) maps is in turn stolen. Now what does that tell you about the map protection program? If the progam it self can be stolen then how can you rely on the protection service?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by chuiu on 2005-04-29 at 19:54:58
Hexing a program and hexing a map are pretty much the same thing but with the program all was changes were names. It would be much harder to unlock a map by hexing it.

So ... I have no idea what you mean.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Wild9 on 2005-04-29 at 21:00:44
I dont know anything about hexing so i assumed that changing a program was more difficult than hexing a map.

But what Im trying to say is:
You use an anti-virus to keep you safe from viruses.
The anti-virus program it self becomes infected.
How can you rely on that anti-virus to protect you from viruses?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by chuiu on 2005-04-29 at 21:28:50
There you go, you don't know anything about hexing! Hexing strings is much easier than hex-unprotecting a map. So while he may have "stolen" the program, it doesn't mean he made the program not function properly. The reason it's in the DLDB is because it does function properly. So there is no problem.

Well can you teach me a bit more about hexing.
Such as how to hex.
Basic concepts and rules.
How it works and what does it do and all that good stuff?

Report, edit, etc...Posted by Yoshi da Sniper on 2005-04-29 at 22:59:31
You don't need to know hexing. It is just a machine code viewer which is often abused by people to steal credit from peoples hard work with programs and maps. I can only assume you want to learn for the purpose of abusing hex editing for your own benifit.

Topic closed, because its turning out to be nothing constructive.
