Battle Arena

General Info:
Battle Arena is a... battle arena (surprise huh) designed for mulltiplayer only. Every player has one (1) hero and has to kill enemy hero's. Sounds simple... it is. But it isn't that simple to stay alive.
When you kill enemy's you get money and experience. With money you can buy weapons, potions and spells, but every item has a level restriction. When you've enough experience you'll increase in level, you'll get more health and you are able to buy better items.
When you kill a high level player you'll get much more gold and experience then when you kill a (noob) player with an much lower level then you.

You can only get experience by killing enemy players, but you can get money on other way's too. There is a game setting where one-shot-zerglings (and probably stronger ones too, dunno yet) roam around, attacking everything the see, you can kill them for money. With Capture The Flag you get much money when you capture the flag and return it too your base.
There will be more things where you'll get money from, but I still got to think about that.

Basic Gameplay:
Because it is battle arena, the gameplay is very importent. That is why I try'd to make it as perfect as it can be with the limitations of the editors. Personly I think I've created an good gameplay. It is reliable, fast, easy to use, simple and it doesn't ruin fun or something like that. Well, enough praising, here's how it all works:

There is only one thing that is needed to be done to do damage to someone, and that is, surpris surprise, target him. Sounds simple, and that is exactly what it is, you only have to attack the Scourge which is near him. When you've targeted him you automaticly start firing your weapon. While you have him targeted you can cast a spell, use a potion, change weapon, run away or target someone else.
There are four things that will cause you to stop targeting anyone. Those are: when you die, when you run away (further then your weapon can shoot), when someone casts a spell which causes that and the last one is time. Now you may think 'what the heck' but it's very logic. You have to target someone every few seconds (about 3-5, dunno yet) so you can't just target him once and then start running circles. This way you have to stand still to target someone, that's kinda logic isn't it, you can't aim well when you're running and your enemy is behind you, now can you.

UPDATE 24 APRIL
There will be occur random events at random times everywhere around the arena. Here are some examples of the events which might happen:
- Boss: Summons an boss somewhere in the arena, killing it gives you much money and experience
- Spawns: Spawns several small zerglings in the Arena, they are dead in one shot but they do an considirable amount of damage with there claws. They only give money when you kill them
- Money crate: Creates an money crate somewhere in the Arena
- Experirience crate: Creates an experience crate somewhere in the Arena
- Health crate: Creates an health crate somewhere in the Arena
- Potion: Creates an potion somewhere in the Arena (goes to your inventory for later use)
- Killing round: Sets the health of everyone in the Arena to 1, players at the shops aren't effected.
And more when I can think of them.

Game Modes and Settings:
Now this is something that raises the replay factor dramaticly. At the beginning of the game player 1 can choose one Game Mode.

This is the list of Game Modes:
UPDATE 24 APRIL
- Free For All (FFA): Exactly what the names say's, everyone against everyone.
- Team Match ™: Now the players are seperated in teams (3v3 or 2v2v2)
- Capture The Flag (CTF): Capture the flag and bring it back to your goal to score.
- Team Capture The Flag (TCTF): Same as CTF only 3v3 or 2v2v2.
- Last Man Standing (LMS): When you're killed you will have to wait to the next round until you can be respawned, the winner of an round gets much gold.

UPDATE 24 APRIL
- Money For All: Everyone get's a amount of money every amount of time.
- Boss: Every while an boss will be spawned at an random location in the Arena.
- Alien Invasion: Hordes of aliens roam through whole the Arena.
- Insta Kill: Everyone is dead in one shot.

Scores:
This engine allows full record of amost everything in the game. Here's an list of what can be recorded:
- Deaths and kills
- Shells fired
- Spells used
- Potions used
- Aliens killed
Etc.
This can all be shown at the end of the game, you can also see the scores of the other players (!!) simple by moving to the correct beacon.

Also, everytime when you fire, cast a spell, kill someone, get damaged, etc. etc. etc. it will be told, with the exact amount of damage and/or other effects.

Shops:
There are quite some shops, you can easily acces them by moving to the beacon in the middle of the Arena. When you stand on the shop beacon you can choose what item you want with the (by me created) Scarab Counting system. Hmmmm, I remember something about people saying it was a useless system... Well anyway, here's the list of the shops:
- Light Weapons Center: Sells light weapons
- Advanced Weapons Center: Sells advanced weapons
- Potion Shop: Sells potions
- Mage Tower: Sells weak spells
- Wizard Tower: Sells strong spells
Is all self-explaining I suppose.

Items:
There are a LOT of items, however there is a limit of the number of items you can carry around with you. You can have 2 weapons, 1 armor, 3 potions and 5 spells in total (don't know the exact numbers for sure yet), so you have to choose carefully of what you take.

(green = done, red = not done yet)

Potions:
UPDATE 22 APRIL
- Healing Potion: Gives 10 health
- Greater Healing Potion: Gives 20 health

- Speed Potion: Increases your attack rate
- Invulnerability: Makes you invulnerable for a short time
- Purify: Removes all negative spells from you and give you 5 health
- Regeneration Potion: Gives you 15 health over 5 sec
- Greater Regenation Potion: Gives you 25 health over 5 sec

- Cure Poison: Removes the any poison
- Free will: Removes the 'paralysed' condition
- Speak: Removes the 'silenced' condition (silenced = not be able to cast spells)

Probably more to come.

More to come...

Spellcasting and potions:
UPDATE 22 APRIL
Spellcasting and potions are importent in the game. When you don't use spells and potions you'll die quickly. Using potions is very simple, you just buy them at the Potion Shop, then simple unload the potion of your dropship and you will use it. Casting spells goes exactly the same, only you'll need a target for most spells, when you don't have a target (and you do need one) you won't cast the spell.
There are diferinces between spells and potions, here is the list of them:
Potions:
- Are expensive
- Don't have a level requirement
- Can always be used
- Don't have a cooldown time
- Can't be stopped
- Can only help you, but not damage a enemy
- Can be used while you're silenced
Spells:
- Have a level requirement
- Have a coolddown
- Can be stopped by a enemy
- Later spells are extreemly powerfull
- Some spells are very iritating

You can use a spell or potion once, after you've used it it disapears, but you can always buy multiple spells/potions of the same kind.
As I said, spells have a cooldown. When you've used a spell a timer will go in, you can't use any spells until the timer is over. The more powerfull the spell is the longer the cooldown. This is to prevent people from spamming spells.

Terrain:
UPDATE 24 APRIL
For the terrain I choosed Twilight, I like the dark theme. It will be Isomatric, but maybe I'll add some square tiles to give it a better look.
The terrain is importent for the gameplay. When the Arena is just one big open space only your gun and spells count, that's why it won't be an open space. There will be lots of hight diferences, mazes, hide outs, waters, etc. Since you don't have shared view this will sometimes cause for exiting hide and seek games.
There will be teleporting beacons everywhere around the Arena. They will teleport you to an other place (with an beacon, most of the times). With those teleporting beacons you can ambush enemy players or try to escape them. Some beacons go to an random place, these are excelent for escaping stronger enemy's, however you might be teleported right next to an even bigger problem.

Completed list:
UPDATE 23 APRIL
- Targeting
- Damaging
- Distargeting
- Reloading
- Shops
- Multiple weapons system
- Spells system
- Potion system

- Experience and Levels
- Spells cooldown
- Reward system (money for kills)
- Item level requirement system

To do List: (random order)
UPDATE 22 APRIL
- More weapons, spells and potions
- Terrain
- Game Modes and Settings
- Copying all triggers for player 3-6
- And last, but VERY importent: Balancing and testing, over and over again

Needed/Questions:
UPDATE 22 APRIL
- I need some ideas for things that will give you money
- What spells/weapons/potions whould you like to see in the game ?
- You've got any ideas for new/other Game Modes/Settings and do you like the current ones or whould you rather see them removed ?
- In a while I will need testers, say it here if you want to do that.
- And of course, when you can think of anything else, share it, I whould really apritiate it!

Remember, with my unique game engine there are a LOT more things possible then normally, so when you've something that you always wanted to see in a game, maybe I can do it for you!

- Deadalus

UPDATE 23 APRIL
- Triggerd the experience, leveling, level requirements, money reward system, money for kills and spell cooldown !!!
- Added some more weapon, potion and spell ideas.

I never thought I could trigger the basics so fast blink.gif, and believe me, it goes FAST. First I think a little about how I'm gonna do it, then I do it, test it, change it somewhat, test it, and then it works w00t.gif...
When I got the Game Settings and Modes working I have ALL THE BASICS DONE !!! But then I have to copy all those bloody triggers for players 2-6, and that will take quite some time pinch.gif. I'll explain to you how much: player1 has an trigger for every weapon*players + every weapon*players (for the killing shot) + every damaging spell*players + every damaging spell*players (for the killing spell) and then all that for players 2-6 too cry.gif

But I'm prepared to do it, but only because I know that when I finish it, it shall rule battle.net !!

Maybe I'm a bit too enthousiast, but I just know it is a very good map and I need the positive spirit to keep going on happy.gif

UPDATE 24 APRIL
- There will be random events
- Added Last Man Standing game mode
- Added info about the terrain
- Game settings are changed

See above for more info

Sounds like your putting a lot of effort into this, and it sounds fun!

Only one problem... there is already a series of games with the Battle Arena name, so some people could get confused as to what the game is

What kind of terrain is it? ISOM? Rectangular? Maze?
I would be glad to test this map biggrin.gif

Your Ideas are very nice, and very well organized, but you have about one major problem....THE WORD AN. You keep saying phrases like:You can have an more weapon then one.
Ex2: There will be over 30 spells an potions.

Go back over your post and fix that one thing please, it was a total pain understanding what u were saying.

Now on the good side-
Once I got Past your grammar issues, i began to notice how many things you actually are putting into the game. It is very well thought out, altho not as complex as you stated in some sentences. The ideas you have implied are very broad and are bringing alot of different aspects together. It looks like you have some stuff like....
*Player vs Player(the arena factor)
*Rpg Factor(Spells and potion)
*Skills factor(experienced players will of course be better)
*Realtime Feel(your observer aiming for not only spells but targeting as well is good)
*And of course your idea for Leveling and Hp Values

I like how many different ideas your mixing into this map, while most other maps are based on only one of these prospects. I wish you goodluck on this map, and i would defenitely like to be a tester.

P.S. FIX GRAMMAR

ISOM terrain, but maybe/probably I'll add some rectangular terrain at some points in the arena, but I've planned the terrain as the last thing so I don't know yet.
The terrain is very importent for the gameplay, it won't be fun when the arena is just an open and plane terrain. I think I'll add quite some diferences in higth and such. In the middle there whould be a open space where the beacon to the shops is located too, from there you can 'hide' into the hills. I like the idea of making some maze parts where you can escape your enemy or ambush them. I whould be cool if there will be 'hide and seek' situtations at same points smile.gif.

What do you guys think ??

I'm not a very good terrain mapper, my expertise is good storylines/plots and creating new trigger systems, never really messed about with terrain. However, because I definantly NOT want to screw this map I will be putting a lot of effort in getting the terrain interesting.

@Sorrow: I'm sorry but I think it will take some time before this map is finished, after I got all the triggers right (won't be that hard anymore), made the terrain acceptable I still got to balance every weapon, spell, potion, etc. and that will take quite some time and testing. I'm putting a lot of effort in this map and that always takes time.

@Tdnfthe1 (nice name... happy.gif): I changed almost all the 'am's' but I dunno when I must use 'an' or 'a' blushing.gif. I couldn't find you examples though... Is my text now better?
Yeah, you're right, this map is a mix up of things that are done before, but there are also new things and the combination of this all has (as far as I know) never be done before cool1.gif.
I don't know for sure but I think you didn't understand it completely. You say 'your observer aiming for not only spells but targeting as well is good' but the observer isn't used like in most normal targeting maps. You don't have to move your observer to the player you want to target, you only have to shoot the observer which is hovering above the enemy player. It is MUCH faster and easyer to use then the 'move-obs-to-enemy' thing.

ADDITION:
I updated the main post.

I'm almost done with whole the bloody engine! yay!

Well if you look at the weapons part you can see I WILL add melee weapons cool1.gif, just because I love them too happy.gif.
Melee weapons will really strong, but of course you do need to stand almost directly near the enemy. There will also be spells which increase melee dramaticly. I hope I make it balanced enough so that people will also use melee quite some times.

- Changed the game settings in the first post

Does anyone have more ideas about new game settings??

Ok, update again.

I'm busy with the game settings, they are somewhat harder to trigger then the modes but nothing I can't handle. Now I was thinking about the replay factor of my map. The modes and settings are quite different so everytime you play it you can take other combinations which will cause for different games everytime you play it.
Then I thought, why whouldn't it be possible to change the game modes and settings DURING the game. That whould mean that you don't have too restart the game everytime you want other game modes/settings. Now how does that sound ? smile.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Daigotsu on 2005-04-26 at 21:51:02
lol that sounds like a good idea.

It sometimes gets annoying when I accidently choose a wrong mode only to learn that I have to either restart the game or finish the game. So I think this'll be a good idea.
