QUOTE
Microsoft is preparing an all-out war against Linux using patents, Lawrence Lessig claimed at the Open Source Business Conference in San Francisco.

This is going to be "fun". If he goes ahead and start doing this using his very stupid patents such as, moving your mouse, cracker attacks against MS products will increase tenfold im sure.

I dont use Linux, but this is just GATES trying to run others off the net

I'll tell you why if Microsoft wins it'll be bad.

Most Hosting Web Servers run on Linux.
If Linux is no more, then all those servers will have to mass change their OS.

Microsoft's compitition is what drives Microsoft to make better products. If there isn't any compitition then they have no need to strive to do better.

As Bolt says, it's a good thing.

Well, as I understand what Bolt said, a good thing untill and if they win, at which point competition will cease to exist and they'll start slouching.

But if Microsoft takes it too far, there will be massive reprecussions as stated above. They need to be cautious as well as ambitious or they are just going to end up feeling the heat.

warhammer, that would be a worst case scenario. All the Windows machines and Linux will have to convert to Mac then. That means that at least 90%~95% of all computers in the world will need a OS change. I don't think that Mac can issue millions of copies of their hardware in such little time. Everything will be stuck for a while, no more Internet for a while I suppose.

Also if what I think is true, I'm not so sure about it but, The standard computer like Dell, E-Machines, Hewlett-Packard and Sony Baio can't handle Mac because they were made for Windows and Linux was made to be compatible with Windows machines. All computers which I've seen using a Mac Operating System, have been Apples. Now everybody will have to buy an Apple and I highly doubt that one company, which isn't very large as the major computer manufactoring companies today will be able to create, millions of computers.

The best solution would be for Bill Gates to lay off. If he doesn't and he wins in court, just have the Lunix people pay him with money and not with the company itself and the Linux OS.

Hmmm... As much as I dislike Linux, they do have a right to make their OS... I'm not exactly sure what justification Gates has...

QUOTE(vnunews.net)
Microsoft today expanded its end user intellectual property protection policy to cover customers using a wider range of its software, including Windows Server System, SQL Server and Exchange Server, Microsoft Office System and the Windows client software.

That sounds reasonable... I mean, Microsoft did make those products... And I'm not sure how protecting their right to those products threatens Linux, or any other open-source company.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by SpaceBoy2000 on 2005-05-01 at 16:00:31
Hmm, I was thinking more along the lines of "software patents", which is one of the dumbest things those freakin' politicians ever though of. Microsoft will probably "patent" things like a scrollbar and sue Linux. Okay, so they won't patent a scrollbar, I think Sun holds that patent right now, but to put it simply, someone's going to "patent" some completely inane, and use it to kill off open-source development.

Well this is cool, because I talked to my technology director for my school a few weeks ago and I think I convinced him to switch to Linux, Firefox, and Open Office instead of Windows, IE, and MS Office Suite respectively. He's one of those people that starts going into the "we won't bow to the Microsoft Gods any longer!" Oh yeah, did I mention that we'll save $90,000 (the school district) a year by using better products? How can you go wrong?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Wilhelm on 2005-05-01 at 18:29:40
Microsoft is attempting to generate a monopoly, in which it can then destroy all free software, forcing everyone to buy their shitty programs which they'll be forced to pay for. Unfortunately for us, no one is doing a god damn thing about it.

if linux is shutdown, there will still be more competition.. and who knows, maybe mac could rise up from the grave?

i dont think theyll have to change just because linux was shutdown...

even if they did, i bet half of them who have linux would keep it anyway, and there many people running linux.

if it gets shutdown all you have to do is get another genius *cough to grab the source code, start a corporation and rename the freaking thing..

(BTW a corporation isnt always a huge warehouse, its just a bunch of files in a folder in a government building somewhere...)

Its like the old Browser wars. Back a long time ago when we were first getting internet there was the question to what browser/service we would use. Netscape ended up biting the dust and Internet Explorer took over the market for years.

Since then little has been done to internet explorer to make it better. But now the compitition is starting to arise again because more and more people are dissatified with Internet Explorer. As a result of this, Microsoft is taking alot of large steps to get ahead of the race once again. They have IE.7.0 in the works right now and Intend on releasing it before the release of the next OS. There are also other things such as there spyware remover that is a result of this.

Yes, good point..

Do you think that Microsoft might Lose internet explorer (i mean like, that it gets behind in the amount of other users of mozilla and firefox.)

All of these heartless comments about Linux saddens me. The lovable penguin is the essence of what true computer usage is. Everything shared, no limits, freedom.
