Staredit Network -> Terrain -> Town Building Tips
Report, edit, etc...Posted by TheOddAngel on 2005-05-01 at 17:49:16
Ok I dont know how many times I have seen a Poorly made town...
Towns shouls look like towns not just a bunch of supply depots thrown into
a large area... A town a Variety...

1) The Terrain
Make sure everyplace of your town serves a point. Dont just put a place in because you feel like wasting space. Have each part of the town have different things...

Example 1: A Bridge leading to a small little island on the side with nothing on it will seem pointless... Why would you go there... However A little island with a special building or something that will happen there is a good idea.

Place terrain that goes with the mood of your town. If it is supposed to be a happy town with lots of thriving living things. Place lots of people. Some birds. Bushes. trees. Vines. Bridges, Waterfalls, Grass. If the mood is a sad deserted town that was attacked in a war place the opposite. If the town is in a war place units that have weapons, a really cramped town with a lot of buildings build close together, Some bushes and trees for enviorment.

2) The Buildings:
Place a variety of buildings that include supply depots, Acadamys, Terran Addons, barracks, Starports, MissleTurrets, Bunkers. the placement is very important. Place them along the walls and mabe under some trees and bushes... Make sure it looks good and you are happy to work with that town for the rest of the map you are making.

Example 2: Try to avoid placing 10 Supply depots all in a square piece of terrain... Complete dirt ground with civilians running around, No doodads... Wouldn't it look nicer if you put some lush grass some trees, 2 acadamys, a Barracks, some medics as well as civilians to represent the females (they have to be somewhere...) put a river through it with a nice litle bridge across it. Change the way the walls look to be more random...

3) Tilesets:
Chose your tileset carfuly... The worst thing would be a Medevil times map on a Space tileset with fans and all these tech doodads. Sometimes on space it actualy is better to make everything straight and lines up because it looks good straight and symetrical. However remember you need a variety of buildings not just supplydepots. In badlands it really depends where you build your town... if it is out in the wilderness place it like you would in the top 2 tips. If you place it on the Asphalt it actualy might be better to follow the same thing as you would with space.

4) Extended Terrain:
Make good use of it. Do not just throw random pieces of Extended terrain in for no reason... If you want to use extended terrain make sure there is a reason for it... Do you really need all that bridge terrain? Do you really need huge Mountain Cliffs? Only Place it where you think it would be useful and make the town look good.

Remember some people may have different thoughts but this is a guide made by me to help some people make some towns with variety not just plain old Buildings placed in rows...

No offense, but they are both crap tongue.gif

I know they both are. that is why it says "Less Crap!!!"
Its still crap, but a better idea. Plus, what do you expect from a 5 second example? A good town wouldn't fit in one screenshot. I would have to do matching.

The first one all you see is two guys and like 5 boxes.
The secomd, you see marines roaming, civilians, factories, starports, "Town Hall", snipers, defence, etc.

You can decide what one is "CRAP!!!" and "Less Crap!!!" tongue.gif

Summary of the first post, or tips:
Dont throw random crap together. Find a purpose for it and use it.

There. That was simple.
