Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> Douglas Wood kidnapped by terrorists
Report, edit, etc...Posted by www.com.au on 2005-05-02 at 08:03:12

Its been in the news recently..

a man named Douglas Wood has been kidnapped in iraq,
The militants Holding him, Known as the Shura Council of the Mujahedeen of Iraq, released a tape of him saying:

"My captors are fiercely patriotic. They believe in a strong united Iraq looking after its own destiny", "They (the Iraqis) are strong, they will be (able to), look after themselves against their neighbours. Please help me. I don't want to die." and also stating his citizenship and home country: "I'm Australian, a US resident, my wife is an American. We have a house in Alamo, California,"

The terrorists wanted all of the U.S. and Australian troops to retreat from Iraq..

Prime Minister John Howard (the Prime Minister of Australia) has replied saying "we do not negociate with terrorists"

Bush has also Denied the Demands.

Proof (if you havent heard this before) that im not making this up: This is Proof. Click. (By the way, the link reffers to SBS, an australian Broadcasting Network).

My thoughts: I dunno.. really.. its hard to choose, they probably should retreat though, since theyre not helping anybody by staying there.

Your Thoughts/Comments??

im sorry but i have to agree with with howard. you cant scrap the rebuilding of a people because one mans life is at stake. this will also help them relieze that the stratagy of takeing a man hostage does not work thereby preventing them from relying on that tactic in the future. if we kneeled before there comands it may lead to them being more eager to use that in the future. it would never end. (get out of my home or this man dies) (give me money or this man dies) let me escape or this man dies) these things cannot lead to anything other than more terrorism. these ideals that one man matters are mistaken and we need to look at the big picture. i would expect my country to do the same for me.

yes i seen this on the news today morning and i dont want to say this but he will die. Throughout this 2003-2005, many people have been taken hostage and have been shot or beheaded. Popular cases have been with 3 Vietnamese people, a Korean person, and an American Person. Well, out of hostage situations, there has been 1 man who was freed by terrorists and he is the only one who i knew who was freed alive. For this Australian man, chances are that he will die. Sorry to say sad.gif

As sad as it is they won't pull troops out just because they are going to kill one guy. It may be cruel but there is not much choice they can make.

We cannot be seen as negotiating with terrorists. The terrorists made the poor guy read out a script.

I've seen things like this in the news, where people have been taken hostage, but it hasn't seemed to work because no one ever negotiates with the terrorists.

QUOTE
The rescue team is preparing to depart, hours after a video tape was released by insurgents showing an ashen-faced man identifying himself as Douglas Wood, 63.

Thats what it said in the article.

we will not meet the terrorists demands. We won't. and the army doesn't need the command of bush or howard to go in a rescue them...

Ya, if we're going to leave, leave for a diff reason. Not just because of a few hostages.

Point...

they're to stubborn to pull out anyway...

wait.. why are we in there????

and if they want to make a real impact they'll probably have to take like 30-40 hostages sad.gif

U.S. to terrorists: quit committing acts of terror and we'll leave when we think the country is safe from people like you.
Terrorists to U.S.: we have one of your citizens. Pull out of the country or we kill him!
U.S. to terrorists: quit committing acts of terror!!
Terrorists to U.S.: get out of our country!!

Nobody's listening, everybody wants to be heard, so people die.
