You people will get lazy, so I'm gonna make a new contest, an interesting one.
Well, first of all, and even most of the map makers here already know this, I'm gonna say what I mean with ambient. The ambient in a map is really important: make the user feel exactly how it would feel if it were on that place. You can make the user feel happy, scared, sad, etc just using terrain, sprites and units. If you add music the effect usually becames much better if you select the right music for each place.
There are lots of maps with great ambient terrain. As an example I think that the best of them is 'House of the Haunted' by Bolt_Head. I also enjoyed dabbu's rock map.
So, this contest goes about ambients. Think of a place, a desert island, a dark forest, an old battelfield, etc. Then make a map about it. You don't have to make a map with story, triggers, etc, just make a zone of the map that remembers the place that you chose. You can add music to the map and some triggers if you want.
To submit the maps please email them to me. In case you don't care about other people copying your ideas you can post them here before the contest ends, but you'll have to include atleast screenshots, and if your map has music/triggers the map too.
This is not something that you want to keep as secret, so please pm the maps unprotected, so when I post them people can copy sections of the terrain with SF to use it. If you don't want your terrain used by other people (I can't think of a reason, but anyway...) you can tell me it on the map and I'll just post screenshots when the contest ends.
The contest ends on May 22. That's it, two weeks. If 2+ people didn't finish it I might make it a week longer. Once the contest ended I'll make a topic with a poll and I'll let the users vote. Remember: make the user feel like if it were on that place. If you can make that you will mostly win. Also originality on the places will also count.
The winner will get 1000 minerals. Some of the players might get a place in the 'hall of fame' if their terrain is good enough.
So that's all. Enjoy the contest!
Well, I am in. What do I have to lose?

Sounds fun anyways! Good Lusck to all!

House of the Haunted uses pretty much things that can be made using blizzard's SE. Sometimes the standard terrain is the best for some ambients. You just need to place doodads correctly and add some extra, like music or some visual effects.
This seems that we'd be making a lot more than just terrain. I think this could be fun to work on.
Someone should seriously make an extensive editor for the mac.
Sure I'll try. I'll probably get last place, but hey, I need the experiance.
*screw it, it's not good. Removed*
Lol trigga, you must have posted that factory like 50 times on this site =/
Lol, true, but it's not that bad... exspecially for this ambience thingy madgig,
i suppose

i've never actually played it but ive seen the terrain

How? i've never ever made a screen shot nor has anyone else.. you had to of played it.
Hmm... I'll go for it with my mediocre terrain skills.

Come to think of it, I can use the terrain in my RPG!

You also never protected it. I have yet to play the map as well, and have opened and viewed it at least three times.

Omg, it's not a ambience if you don't play it, opening the map spoils it so much, you should play it for it's awsome potential
It does have quite the potential. I, who have played it thought it did a pretty good job of expressing a factory. Although it was a little small, if I remember correctly.
Anyways, I've been trying to accomplish a general happy setting. (green rolling hills, big rosy flowers, happy windmills and such.) Starcraft really isn't a happy game, terrain wise.

WOW TRIGGA
you have posted exactly 13 times that damm factory at least say thanks to corbo for the idea ;D
I'll post my hell sample I'm working on.
well like the noob i am I will try, And i need the experince too. But hey good luck to all if you don't mind goin up against a noob terrain maker

o by the way love the white tigger suits your name tuxedo
Maybe I will, maybe I won't. Still haven't found the time to read the instructions never mind make an attempt at it. Maybe in the near future....Good luck all anyways.
im working on one, it only uses staredit terrain and well placed doodads.
its feeling is cold. is there a way i can cloak corsairs so that i can have them attcaking an observer to create snow on the wind.
Sounds cool, I'm having trouble thinking of a good feel for something. I made a mysterious cave, but it didn't feel too good. So I gave up and tryed making a good feel for a market, but its hard to make a good feel for a market. With hustle and bustle, banners and things.
[attachmentid=8993][attachmentid=8994]hmm i think this is right ill just post my terror of a flooding planes while a guy is trapped on the ridge were 2 water falls are running off the rest of the water wouldn't you hate it to be you? yes this is what to expect of a noob
Poor city. The waterfalls were a little blocky, but I'll let it slip by. The town itself, seems like it needs some sort of order to it, it just looks pretty random for a town.Try to put some sort of island, for a hill or something that wasn't flooded. And a half burried statue would be cool.
