I've experimented with this in WoS2, here's what basically goes on:

You have the average RPG with a computer-controlled town, spells, items and what not. You can enter buildings, buy things, etc. The twist is that you can enter the Town Hall and replace the computer as Commander. Your RPG hero is stuck in the Town Hall, but the entire town (buildings and units) is now under your control. Minerals are swapped so you can still continue later as your Hero. For balance purposes, all the units have uber low attack powers, so the other human Hero players can still make the difference. So that power will not lead to corruption, an Overthrow option is available to kick the Commander.

Since WoS2 never got too popular due to the extreme confusing interface that haunts my entire my WoS series, this innovative feature never became too well known.

What's WoS2?

It seems like a neat idea. What would the aim of the game though? What would be the incentive/disincentive for controlling the town or your hero?

WoS2 = World of Starcraft 2.
It seems like a nice idea, but I'd rather be a hero over a commander anyday, since that isn't my cup of tea. tongue.gif

So in general, you'll all be on the same side, yes?

The system can be moidified to accomodate more than one side, but in the attached WoS2 you can only Command one "town".
