I think its a number of things. I also think your being too general. Many illegals cause that improper english you were talking about. Also inner city school don't produce that many smart students becuase many students there don't care about their future and many are involved in gangs and drop out. Also, schools today teach much more advanced things then schools use to teach. I think pressure to succede makes alot of people fail becuase they can't take the stress becuase in AMerica we have created the environment to succeed and if you don't have straight A's, then you will not go to college. And then makes some people say, "oh

it, Im not that smart, I will never get A's so why should I try?" and thats bad but true.
and now a days jocks are actually turning smart. I'm considered a jock becuase I play many sports, lacrosse and football for examples and Im smart. An upper classman is a total jock but gets straight A's and is going to George Town for College.
Its more of the girls who want to be like Paris Hilton and celebs like that, which cause these girls to care more about having fun, friends, and their bodies and how they look more then school. One girl in my grade didn't know who Tony Blair was......and another didn't know what trench war fare was.

First off, I'd have to agree about the girl thing, but this is once again with the stereotypes we see. Girls are actually more likely to be capable of competent thought if they werent like the stereotypical ones we seem to see today. Rather sad, really... There are the few that don't follow the shitiness of society, and those are the ones that succeed.
On another note, I never said jocks were idiots. I have many friends of my own that are jocks, but could just as easily be mathaticians. I said that it was usually the bully who had to force others to do his/her homework or jack money off of people that was the total and complete idiot, because they had to rely on the abilites of others rather then themself. I suppose you are right about the whole pressure thing, but thats not how it is at my school. I'm in middleschool, you see, the stuff the people are learning here is easily 2 grades under their grade level. 8th grades could still be learning exponents! Or even worse, fractions!
(I got ot a middle school where its 6th-8th grade) Honestly, if there isn't something wrong with that, then I must be a total idiot
(Which I'm not, and I can assure you that I'm not, because if I was, then I wouldn't be able to do Geometry, which I can, so I'm pretty sure I'm not).
And yes, I suppose I am being a little too general, but the majority of the population isnt really all too bright, you can't really argue with that, right? Well, there's the problem right there. People that have brains that don't use them are considered stupid. Those type of people make up most of the U.S., and thats all I was trying to point out at first.
Yes, I also believe illegals are causing some of the lower then low grades. I mean, it's not that theyre stupid, but really, most of them probably don't have an education, which means their kids won't really care all too much for learning, and this leads to a quick decrease in the percentage of intellectuals in the country. I believe that it is also often people like this who end up starting gangs and other such, and corrupt other parts of society into horrible messes (murders, drug dealing, other crimes, or simply even convincing others to join).
And as for the stress levels, that is only because people have no confidence in themselves and don't really put too much effort into their work at all. I'm pretty sure that's why, or else it wouldn't be as stressful because there would be allot less failures going on around the States.
But ofcourse, I could be wrong.

It's suprising how many less people completed school in the old days, and how our education for the masses hasen't really improved even with more school.
Basically if you want to learn anything, your going to have to WANT to learn something. Schools don't teach, students learn.

Yes, but in the old days, I believe there were more people that actually wanted to learn. That is what my topic is focusing on. Nowadays, hardly any of the average people give a shit about education. Hence, why I ask what happened to the old days, where there was actually effort to learn.
