Staredit Network -> UMS Assistance -> Reading Directly from CD
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Undead-Fox on 2005-06-10 at 19:41:18
First, I would like to apologize to any of the moderators of this forum if this Subject does not belong in the Forum: 'Map Making Assistance', but I honestly don't know where to put this.

I was wondering if there was a way, whether by MOD, Third Party Program, or some other form, that you could be able to read StarCraft Maps directly from a burnt CD. Thus, I mean not having to have the maps in the Map Directory of StarCraft.

Also, if this program or MOD must be created, I, and probably many others, would greatly appreciate the production of this type of program. As I have no experience in programming and the like.

If you have ANY Information on something of this sort:

Floppy Disks? blink.gif

Why would it matter? Just copy the CD into your maps directory.

Ya, I really don't think you need a Third Party Program to do that.

I'm not about to use floppy disks, and I don't want to have to use up a ton of space for these maps. They are on the disc, and they are huge. I didn't ask for ways of transporting a map from one place to another, I asked how to make StarCraft read maps from a CD instead.

And one thing: No stupid remarks about 'YOU NEED THE SC CD IN ORDER TO PLAY SC YOU NEWB!!'

Why bother?

Unless you have 2 optical drives.

As far as I know of, if you want to play a map it MUST be somewhere in your starcraft directory. At the moment I don't know of a program that lets you do play a map that isn't located, in a different directory that starcraft is located in. However, I hear that blizzard is going to make this possible in their next patch.

Thank you very much SA_Max17. That was the most helpful post out of ANYONE! else that has to this topic.

There is one way to play a map that is not in your SC folder. I've enver verified this but it comes from a reliable source.

Most people know that the archives are loaded in a hierarchial order - patch_rt, broodat, stardat, and finally install.exe on the CD. When you play a map, the map gets tacked onto the end of this list. When SC goes to read a file, it looks in each of those archives, in that order. So, if you name a file staredit\scenario.chk and put it in any of those archives, it will read that instead of the map you selected.

This isn't too useful for you, because it only works with 1 map.

This amazes me, How small is your harddrive? I have over 4000 map files and they take up about 600megs (about .27%) of my hardrive space.

Oh yeah and i have heard of things such as no cd patches and dual CD Roms.

Duh, doesn't mean he isn't using one.

If they didn't mind people NOT using a CD then they would of just had it fully install from the get-go.

God.. you guys are really.. well, for the supposed "respected members" that you are, I'm amazed at your answers to this quite simple question. I believe Fox is trying to either place maps into the Starcraft MPQ, and then play them, or play the campaign maps on b.net without saving them to the map folder. Heimdal's method seems to be relatively sound.

Heimdal, thank you very much for this information. I can see how I suppose one would be able to implement this to read from a CD. However, I am still open to anything that may lead to further investigation of this or any other method.

and you can't place them on your HD for what reason? I have an 80 gig harddrive and i have over 3000 maps. They take up about a gig.

People, I did NOT ask for a lecture on computer space and how many maps you have. If you can't say anything that may contribute as to how to read Maps from a CD, please leave your opinions to yourselves.

How about writing an autoplay script that copies all the maps on the CD to a subfolder of the starcraft\maps folder?

Undead-Fox, when someone doesn't know the answer to a question but they still want to help, it is only natural for them to ask questions in order to find out more about the nature of the question or problem. If they know more information, they may be able to suggest a new solution, or an alternative method that will bypass the problem.
So it is totally logical and expected that people ask questions of you that do not directly answer your question, and you shouldn't get upset if they do this.

It's pretty simple. Make a text file named autorun.inf and put it in the root of the CDR. In that text file, write:
CODE
[autorun]
OPEN=copymaps.bat

Now make a copymaps.bat file, also in the root of the CDR. In there, write the following:
CODE
copy maps\*.sc* "c:\program files\starcraft\maps\fromCD"

Then you put all your maps in a maps folder in the CD. That should do it.

Alright, thank you very much for that Heimdal, if worse comes to worst I will use that suggestion. However, if possible, I would much appreciate more suggestions on this.

*Note*: This is not about putting maps on a harddrive, it's about reading them from the CD
