Staredit Network

Staredit Network -> StarForge -> Incomplete SF UMS map crashes BW
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Staredit.Net Essence on 2005-06-11 at 23:57:43
I've got a maybe 1/3-completed UMS RPG type thing I'm making, and it's basically my first map using StarForge. I've got all the start locations set up, conditions for defeat (which should default the victory to remaining players since it's 2 forces against each other), etc.

When I go to run the map in single player on UMS mode, I click OK and nothing happens. I get the whoosh sound that we all love, then the exact same windows appear again, like there was something about the map that made it unstartable.

When I run it as a multiplayer map, I can choose which side I'm on and whatnot, I get through the mission briefing (there isn't one yet), and then Brood War crashes, and Windows gives me a friendly notification of such.

Being the first time using SF, I'm not sure if I missed some basic element to my map that'd make it unable to run, or if my computer just hates me.

If the solution to this problem is documented somewhere on this site, sorry. I did look around for an hour plus for anything about it. =/

The map crashes if one unit is out of the bounds of the map. Also it might crash if you set the HP of some unit to 0.

Suspecting all those units on the right side of the map may have been "off" it, I removed them all, as well as the zerglings on the one-grid strip, thinking there might not have been space for them, and I also got rid of the disruption web units in the top center. Map still crashes. I can't figure it out. *sigh*

I can't test it right now because I'm at work. I'm going to guess that it's those units along the bottom and right edges of the map. The battlecruiser looks like it's sticking off a bit.

If you're familiar with SE, you know that you can't place buildings along the bottom tile of the map, and the bottom 2 or 3 tiles in the bottom right corner. Try removing all units that are close to the edges.

and the bottom 2 or 3 tiles in the bottom right corner.

Whole bottom row, and 2nd to bottom row it is 5 tiles in.
Example:
X=Can't Build at any time; O=Can build if tiles allow
CODE
XXXXXOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

I think that in the left side there are more unbuildable tiles than in the right, but I'm not sure.

It is 5 on both sides.

If you're wondering, it's because of the StarCraft GUI (General User Interface). The two corners sticking up on the left and right are taken into account, so it just doesn't let you place units there.

Rexy, GUI stands for Graphical User Interface...

-Totally Off Topic-
Oh! At the time of posting, Rexy was listening to Wait and Bleed! YAY!!!

-On Topic Now-
On SCXE look where you can't place units using a grid. Then using the grid in SF, avoid unit placement in those areas.

If it is units off the map (Havn't looked at it...) here is what you do to prevent it (this is also good to know anyways):
What you can do (and what I do) is do the terrain (if Isometrical (default diamond shape) use Xtra, then do any square tiles in StarForge).
Then when you are done with terrain, go into Xtra and place any units you need, and do whatever you need to.
Then in StarForge finish the map and because all units were placed in Xtra, there are none that are invalidly placed.

To me, StarForge is more of a tool of making your map nicer and add a few things like square terrain, colored wireframes, sprites, etc. So I suggest using Xtra to make the most of the map, and StarForge for any square terrain and to finish the map.

EDIT: The point of the last paragraph was to say that it is better to use Xtra as the main editor, then StarForge to make it a little more .. special.
