Report, edit, etc...Posted by Chef on 2005-06-15 at 18:15:29
A lot of topics here seem to be going no where, so I'll make a topic about something almost everyone loves. Before I tell you what I'd like to start talking about I'll lay down a few ground rules.

Please do not say someone else's music sucks, that's totally opinion.
When asked your favorite, just pick one (at most 3) band(s), I don't want a list.
Please answer the main points of discussion.
Please organise seperate points of discussion with paragraphs.
Use appropriate spelling and grammar.
Follow my example if you're confused.

Okay so here's what I think would be fun to discuss...

What bands/kind of music you listened to when you first got into music.
What you think of what you first listened to.
If you prefer bands where the sound is unedited, and you're just hearing them (ie, live).
What your favorite bands are at the moment.
If you think you'll still be listening to them later in life.
If you think the music you like will die with your age group.
If you think the Radio does a good job music wise.
Your basic philosophy on what makes music good.

This is what it is for me:

When I first got into music the bands I listened to were Sum 41 and Treble Charger. Ever since I've been a rocker.

I think that compared to the bands I listen to now, they're not so hot, but on their own, I still like them.

I prefer bands that can preform live, because I think they have more talent, and have worked harder to get where they are. It also seems they're less about image (I dislike musicians, who are more about the image than the music, I actually prefer no image). To me, musicians that need help to sound good, aren't worth listening to.

At the moment, I like a lot of little known bands, but my favorite of all time is pretty well known. Our Lady Peace, because they can preform live and sound great, and to me, they just sound really, really good.

Definitly. I think I'll be listening to them long after I've finished school. I've bought all their albums (except for live, because I have the DVD of that). Maybe I'm naive, but I'm pretty "loyal" to bands I listen to. I also like Jag Panzer, but mostly because they have Chris Broderick (ie, most underated guitarist of all time).

It probably will stop at my age group, because the days of rock and roll are being replaced with heavy editing and hybrids (rock/rap ie linkin park).

A talented singer who doesn't sound like a eunuch, and a complex rhythm. Little if any editing =D

Feel free to add a new thing to discuss, so long as it is intriguing, and not just trivial. This topics theme, will hopfully be somewhat along the lines of an evolution of music, and the diffrences of music between cultures, age and location.

Thanks and have fun,

What bands/kind of music you listened to when you first got into music.
Well... I never was into music until now. Now its all i do. So i couldnt say... Like, i liked music, but it was just the typical phases...

When i was very young it was all that light crap. (i cant name any of them, sorry.)

When i was a bit older i ALMOST got into the rap phase. but then...

Bands back in the day
In about fourth grade i started listening to what my brother had on his computer, things like SOAD and Red Hot Chili Peppers.(i guess) But i still didnt listen to it much.

What you think of what you first listened to.
They were just phases, i hate them now. Im at the point where you exit the phases, and start to like the music you will always(most likely) like.

If you prefer bands where the sound is unedited, and you're just hearing them (ie, live).
EDIT- O, i see what you mean. Well duh, i hate people who need sound studios to make them better. But i like the effects, and you dont get that live.

Personally i like to listen to the real CDs, not live Because of cheering, less effects, and changes. (I cant sing along)

What your favorite bands are at the moment.
bands like Led Zeppelin(duh), Pink Floyd, Nirvana, and so on. (Rock and metal)

If you think you'll still be listening to them later in life.
Like i said, my theory is that you go through music phases. (Light music, then rap, and so on.) And you go through these phases(Sometimes you can skip some, like i skipped rap) and then finally get to the point where you start liking the music you'll like for the rest of your life. (of course it may alter a little!) So, yes, i hit what i'll be listening to forever, in my opinion.

If you think the music you like will die with your age group.
My age group is holding bands like Led Zeppelin up. Like... when the generation before us die, the music will fade, and then we'll keep it up until we die. The generation after us will have barely anyone who likes that kind of music.

Your basic philosophy on what makes music good.
First, we need good lyrics. Sometimes i pass by a radio with what I like to call "Tony Hawk Music,"
and the lyrics are DISGUSTING!! You have to put thought into your lyrics, and they should be pretty awesome.

Dont get me started on how much i hate this repeating crap. I hate when bands repeat the same phrases OVER AND OVER again.

It has to be original. I dont want a copy of a song already made.

And whew, this rule is ignored alot-
All of your songs need to sound diferent, but the same. I dont want to listen to a song, then go to the next one on the album, and hear the exact same thing with a few changes. In my opinion, Linkin Park does this. BUT nobody wants to listen to a song, and then the next one is COMPLETELY diferent! That causes downloading, because you have to stay with the genre.

And you need talent. I hate people like Britney Spears who only make it in the business because she has big boobs.

And theres probably somore things ill add later that i forgot.

Looks like violentj won't be posting here.

Anyways... I enjoy mostly rap/hip-hop and I always have.

My favorite is Ludacris. Even though some of his songs may be quite pointless he has some of the best rhymes. Most of his older stuff is better though.

I also like G-Unit. G-Unit includes 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Young Buck, Tony Yayo, The Game, and Olivia, and they have all put out solo records, all of which I own along with 2 G-Unit CD's.

I don't hate rock music, I just don't think that there are any good bands, and with rock, I prefer older stuff.

Not trying to be rude or anything, but Pink Floyd did all their stuff in a studio.... And most bands that have effects (Delay effects, Flange effect, Chorus effect, ect...) usually have foot pedels.

Oh, by the way................ Zeppelin rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What bands/kind of music you listened to when you first got into music?

Well, that's a hard one. I have been around music my whole entire life. I grew up to the totally awesome and wicked oldies of Credence Clearwater Revival, Nazarath, Zeppelin, Kiss, Ace of Bass (From my sister) New Kids on the Block (Cause of my sister again. And they BLOW DOGS) and the great skills of my dad playing a song that has "Go gooooo.. Go Johnny go gooo." (I don't know the songs name. It's on the Back to the Future movie)

What you think of what you first listened to?

The only song that I can actually remember from my childhood, was a song created by a DJ by the name of DJ Beaker. The song was known by me and my brother as Star Wars. My brother slapped that shit in and was all, "listen to this". It started of with a "da da da daaa da da" synth noise for the bassline, and I was all like, "WTF? This shit sucks!" and he was all, "just wait you idiot". then the finnaly, the drums came in. And I was still like, this sucks.
Then! It happened..... It finally got to a "Breakdown" in the song where everything drifted off and there was a breathing noise.... Then..... Do do do du di do du di do... (Can't do the Darth Vader Theme song in a forum cry.gif) And then it hit me. "HOLY JESUS MOTHER MARRY OF CHRIST!" I thought to myself, it can't be real! And my bro was all, "You like it?" Of coarse! I am a hugh Star Wars freak! He knew I would like it..... And ever since then, I have been into Electronic Music.

If you prefer bands where the sound is unedited, and you're just hearing them (ie, live)

I prefer to listen to unedited things. Edited, completely blows.

What your favorite bands are at the moment

Hmmm..... That is a hard one.... I usually don't listen to "Bands" very much. But if I have to post bands, I would have to say Credence Clearwater Revival (CCR RULES!) Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd (Their oldest CD is the greatest) The Doors, The Who, Black Sabbath, well, instead of posting all the old 60s and 70s music, i'll just say that pretty much any 60s-and 70s music, is great. I think Tool is awesome (A Perfect Circle is pretty cool) And SOAD is pretty cool too. I like Silverchair, Soul Asylum is pretty cool. Orgy is tight, specially how they remade that song, Blue Monday. I stayed away from that Pop shit though.

If you think you'll still be listening to them later in life

Of coarse! I will always keep the oldies alive in my family too. And I hope my kids do the same with their kids, and so on and so forth.

If you think the music you like will die with your age group

Well, it depends. The music I love, is Electronic Music, and that is the music of the future. But the older stuff. Yeah, it will. Rap will always be around. I think it will eventually murge with Electronic Music (it pretty much is Electronic already smile.gif)

Your basic philosophy on what makes music good

Well, any music that can make me move, must be good happy.gif

Are you telling me that the 70's had no super popular hybrid bands? God damn! Slap yourself if you think that Pink Floyd is just plain old rock. Nearly all rock bands in the 70's and 80's had something odd to them. Most of them had a keyboard, but others like the Blue Oyster Cult has a freaking cowbell! That's fusion right there.

I grew up listening to Rap.... I know, a white guy listening to rap OMFG he's a freak. I listened to classic rap, in my opinion, the only good rap.

Anyways, I started listening to techo after that and that's where I first started to hear about fusion bands.

Pink Floyd instantly became my favorite with Echoes. Later on I heard about Linkin Park. Me liking the sounds of all that stuff playing at once and lyrical styles of other music types being put into rock was cool.

I like hearing them recorded in a studio because you get more of the sound into the microphone and on the CD than you do live because there is less distance and its a more closed space. Therefore, better quality sound.

Now, living in a mostly american/mexican (yes mexican, not latino, all of them there are mexican so I can say that), I've started listening to metal and death metal.

Overall I like Children of Bodom, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Linkin Park.

Favorite Genres are fusion, death metal, rock, and alternative.

I would just like to applaud everyone who has posted thus far in this thread that you actually have come up with something very good and have managed thus far to stay pretty much completely on topic. I applaud you all.

My musical interest probably first started with jazz music. I personally still like jazz a lot but it really only is somehting you can appreciate if you really get into it. I didn't really get into it all that much but maybe enough to get some of the musicality that most people cant discern between.

After that i kinda got into some alternative music styles. which i still am enjoying now, but even though i play trombone i really dont know all that much about music. I do enjoy listening to it very much though and have acquired a very eclectic taste in music. Basicly i'm pretty much up for any kind of music.... except country....no comment on that one...

What bands/kind of music you listened to when you first got into music.
When I 1st got into music, I went through an identity crisis for about 24 - 30 months, so I listened to KoRn.

What you think of what you first listened to.
I look down on what I 1st listened to. There were so many other better bands out there, but I never really got into them much. KoRn was the only band I ever kinda got into.

If you prefer bands where the sound is unedited, and you're just hearing them (ie, live).
My opinion is biased on this, since I make music through note sampling.

What your favorite bands are at the moment.
None as of the moment. I don't listen to just 1 or 2 genres of music, I listen to almost of them. I barely care what genre the song is. As long as it's not lame, and sounds good, chances are, it's fine by me.

If you think you'll still be listening to them later in life.
Hell ya, I'm gonna be like Johnny Cash, and keep making music until I die. I have fun making it, it's just like map making.

Your basic philosophy on what makes music good.
Music is abstract to the max. There are very few actual rules to it. Most of them are just grey guide lines.

Heh. Right on! Old Skool Rap is the best out there. Hell, I grew up to Vannila Ice. Run DMC is the shiat too! Fresh Prince of Bell Air is cool. And the list goes on and on.........

I went through the pop phase, the rap phase, and then I got into Marilyn Manson. I stopped lsitening, and liking rap for the most part. Then during the middle of the Manson stuff, I started listening to The Beatles. As i got tired of Manson, (hearing the same songs over and over, I only have four albums, not that he's made many), I really started to go better into classic rock. Right now I like the genres of classic rock, orchestra, (well, Final Fantasy music, and light touches of some of it), and just anything good at giving a "theme". Creedence Clearwater Revival kicks serious ass. I like them better then, (a good deal of), The Beatles. I love Pink Floyd, but personally, I hate every Led Zeppelin song except Stairway To Heaven.

I like the answering questions by putting them right above your answer underlined, keep doing that. If you have a problem with the word favorite (ie, you have to name every band with a similar sound), just say you don't really have a favorite please.

What I meant by editing, is that some people who can't actually sing, have their voices edited intensly until it sounds nothing like their actual voice. So when they sing live it sounds awful. I didn't mean with screaming fans or anything, just with the ability to sound good with nothing but some amps and your instruments. Part of the reason I like Our Lady Peace so much is because Raine Maida is an amazing singer.

QUOTE

I've never listened to Pink Floyd, I'm more of a garage/club hopping rock fan.

A little history about how I got into music, since it seems unique here. I've never listened to my family's music, because I just didn't like it, there's something about my father blasting country music on a long car ride that just doesn't tickle my fancy. As such, I got into music a little later. I never went through any of those phases, I just picked up what I liked, and it grew on me.

There's nothing like solo guitarist playing with amps to me. It sounds incredible to me.

I'd say "Rock on!" but a lot of you probably don't like rock =D so instead...

What bands/kind of music you listened to when you first got into music.
The oldies stuff...everything from Beach boys to Dean Martin. I remember going to a birthday party in seventh grade and asking who Christina Argulera was. That was her first album, too.

What you think of what you first listened to.
Good stuff. Fun to sing to, and everyone else thinks you're crazy when you're going down the street singin' doo a ditty ditty dum ditty do. tongue.gif (sorry. Couldn't help it)

That's one thing I like about Frank Sinatra; his live performances sound as good as the pre-recorded. Now, Linkin Park on the other hand, not so much.

What your favorite bands are at the moment.
Aerosmith, Frank Sinatra, the Seatbelts, Korn, Pink Floyd, The Doors, pretty much whatever I get into at the moment. --speaking of Pink Floyd, I saw someone mention him. One of the guys in my class thought that the Korn cover of "Brick in the Wall" wasn't a cover. >.<

If you think you'll still be listening to them later in life.
Yea, probably. Why not?

If you think the music you like will die with your age group.
Its already dead. Someone doesn't know who Pink Floyd is. *tear tear* tongue.gif

Your basic philosophy on what makes music good.
An even base of technical and emotional--Dream Theater is frickin amazing, too much ego involved in their jam sessions. The Beatles on the other spectrum, is very emotional, and although I do like them emmensly, not a lot of technical thought went into it. Don't take that offensively, please...I was attracted to Linkin Park at first because it meshed so many types of music together, but I'm not into them as much any more, unfortunately. I guess I'm being to harsh on them and their sophmore album. Oh well...

Edit:
and to that change in pace comment: http://www.staredit.net/index.php?showtopic=15950 I already tried to start a simliar topic. But I guess it isn't important now.

There was a phase like 2~3 years ago when I was into Linkin Park, Sum 41 and stuff like that. But now I hear the stuff that has liked me the most, Rap & Hip/Hop. Mainly at Crunk(Southern Rap). Current favorites are Lil' John & The Eastside Boyz, Ying Yang Twins, and of course Ludacris. Other rappers I listen to but not as often are Thrillville, T.I., Mobb Deep, The Game, Twista, Lil' Scrappy, Nivea (Don't ask me how I got myself to listen to her, it' one song and it sounds pretty good with Lil' John)

If you think you'll still be listening to them later in life.
Most probably. More new rappers are bound to Pop-Up so I might be listening to them.

You've never heard or seen them live then. Some of the stuff is EXTREMELY well controlled feedback. Part of Echoes is that. Also, if you heard King Crimson recorded, then you heard them live, you wouldn't believe they are live. Honestly, bands back then have so much more talent than newer bands.

Well, I started out life hating pretty much all music because I thought that listening to it made it somehow govern parts of your life. Some stupid childhood fear that is...
At about 11 my friends sorta forced me into liking rock, like my first favorite band was God Smack. After listening to that for quite some time, I was introduced into rap, (Note not hip-hop, I like underground rap more than the flashy stuff) first by some local rappers who really just blew my mind away. (Not literally) I listened to this for about a year and a half. The faster the rhymes, the more I liked it. (To this day Rebel XD is one of my favorites) This turned into me liking music that was simply fast. I went through several stages where I liked Techo, along with a wide variaty of just weird stuff in my search for something with a fast bounce to it. This ended up with Ska music and lots of punk stuff. (Catch 22 is cool) Basically the switch to this sort of music came along with a subbtle switch of friendships. The new friends I have introduced me to a lot of alternative stuff.
Basically I have had a fad with all sorts of music. My current state is a new age kinda mix of rap and alternative stuff, if you've listened to Gym Class Heroes you know what I mean. But actually I think that the next way I might go is getting into Orchestrated music, as I have been listening to John Williams lately. I'm probably not going to really settle down into one music area.

What makes music good to me is if it's original. If I've heard the tune before it doesn't appeal to me at all. Another thing that makes music good is if it's instruments match the tone of the lyrics, a good example of this matching would be Greenday's - Misery.

When I first got into music, I wasn't really 'into' it. It was only about 2 years ago that I actually began to like music, when I was introduced to Linkin Park (And other Alternative bands)

What you think of what you first listened to.
I still like a lot of Alternative, but Linkin Park has gone more to the edited side, which I don't prefer (All the high tech sounds hurt my ears!)

If you prefer bands where the sound is unedited, and you're just hearing them (ie, live).
I prefer Live, but some songs sound better edited.

What your favorite bands are at the moment.
Crossfade, Nirvana, Incubus, Guns N' Roses, Pink Floyd

If you think you'll still be listening to them later in life.
I've grown to like most Alternative/Rock/Metal, so I think I'll like it for the rest of my life.

If you think the music you like will die with your age group.
Hopefully not. I think it'll change out of what it is now, but probably not just 'die' overall. I don't think any genre of music will ever just 'die.' There's always gonna be someone that likes it.

Your basic philosophy on what makes music good.
I like songs with a good rhythm, that isn't too fast or too slow. Also, words that I can understand are good. I listen to System of a Down sometimes (Usually when it's just on the radio) and they're songs are alright, but a LITTLE too fast for my taste.
