Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> Want to do something?

I was sitting in school and my class was talking about how its only "work" if you "have" to do it, then I thought of something interesting. I figured, that you have to want to do something in order to do it. If you don't want to do something, you simply don't do it, its impossible to do something you 100% don't want to do. Example: A robber holds a gun to your head and says "Fork over the money". You want to give him the money so you don't end up a grease stain on the floor. If you totally disagree with giving him the money, you get shot. Your mom tells you to do homework, you want to do it because you don't want to fail and get grounded by your parents.

No matter what you do you can't avoid this rule. You see a boring topic out there, you don't click on it because you don't want to, if you DO click on it, it's because you WANT to prove me wrong.

I explained this exact same thing to my dad's face 3 years ago when he was drunk. He hasn't talked to me since.

Wanting to do something is the requirement to do it, but doing something isn't the requirement of wanting to do something.

Wait a minute! I only do things because I have a desire to do them! Well paint me red and call me Sam, what an astonding discovery. You were sick of being wrong so you created a topic about the insanly obvious? You know what else? I'm typing THIS very message with a keyboard =-O Gee wilikers batman.

Well, almost everyone that I've tried to explain this concept to before has denied it and said that I'm wrong, it may be the same for Jet_Blast, and he didn't realize that it was considered common at SEN.
I mean, I've been surprised at times at how stupid some arguments or statements here at SEN I've seen can be.

Basically, I think you're trying to explain why you do things.

While I agree that often, you do things because you "want", it's also true for other things. Sometimes, the conditions for the given scenario just require you to do something; it doesn't even matter if you want to do it or not, you will do it.

This sort of goes into my theory on free-will, so I'll ignore it for now. tongue.gif

I think there are 2 things that can happen, the first and most common way is that you just "want" to. By "want" I mean in the end it's your decision and your brain sends signals to your muscles to perform whatever action. So basically you have the final say and can control what you do. The second way is that the first way doesn't happen and you just get overpowered.

Now I think there can be MANY reasons for why you DECIDE to do certain things that lead to you actually doing them. But eventually you do them because you tell your body to.

In psychology class 2 years ago, my teacher told us about a guy who said this same exact thing, and actually got credit for it. All the other psychologists then labeled him, "Captain Obvious". Forgot his real name though.

What I'm trying to say, is that all trained psychologists and scientists even find this extremely obvious.

First of all, go back to your little melee club.
Second of all, I'm saying you HAVE to want to do something in order to do it, not that, if you want to do something you are likely to do it.

Someone threatens to kill you if you don't give him all your valuables, you want to give him all your valuables so he doesn't kill you.

I'm sorry, I don't seem to have any memory of having an argument with you in which I was wrong.

I don't have a desire to breathe, my body does it for me. Ever hear of the unconscious and all the stuff your body does by itself?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by MillenniumArmy on 2005-06-17 at 22:38:28
Well in some cases, you do things it because you are Physically forced to do so.

Like for instance, your dad wants you to get on a car, but you dont want to. Then he picks you up and drags you into the car while you're kicking your legs into the air hollering like a baby saying "NO! I DONT WANNA GO!"

So basically, you did the task of getting on a car (but with the coercion of another person).

I thought he was refering to psychological behavior. Clearly if you're in coma, you can't choose to stop breathing =/

Where in my post did I say that it was only likely? No where I can see. Yes, I get that even if you choose to go through unpleasentness, it's because you want something out of it. It's not that profound.

The trick is when people refrain from what they do want.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Loser_Musician on 2005-06-18 at 04:44:14
Well, sometimes criminals refrain from breaking the law because sometimes they worry about getting caught again.
