Exactly what is a mod? i think i understand its ways to make additional units, but i don't see how that could be supported on b-net, and i never saw mid use in a b-net game. (starcraft here, not warcraft or diablo) Can anyone please explain?

If a mod contains only altered graphics and or game templates, then yes, you can play it on battle net without the other person having the mod.
You can also play mods on battle.net that alter other things, as long as the people you are playing with have the mod as well.

Mods can either change the settings/graphics on starcraft, or patch starcraft temproarily. You only get use mods if you used a file that looks like a grey wheel that launches to starcraft.

However, you must understand that if you play a mod with only graphics on battle.net, you will be the only one able to see the modded graphics.
