Staredit Network

Staredit Network -> Concepts -> A "truer" RPG
Report, edit, etc...Posted by l)ark_13 on 2005-06-22 at 15:48:32
This is tied into BeeR_KeG's topic, but they had gone a little too off topic for what I wanted to post so I made my own.

I always had this really cool idea where the player could choose from multiple characters, take quests and sometimes choose their own quests (choose storyline quests), each character have their own storyline, and then some events of each character's storyline overlaps with events of another character!

E.g. - Lets say you have to kill a troll and when you're about to kill the troll one of the other characters comes in (as a computer) and tries to protect the troll. Now, lets say you were the person that needed information from the troll, and you went to ask him, but he was being attacked. So you have to defend him this time, as the other character! I always thought this to be a very cool concept, and would bring RPG's closer to a "true" RPG.

I thought I should share this with you because I personally don't have the patients or skills to create such an RPG (I cant stand it when the player gets too many choices. Choices makes the game so much more complex tongue.gif ). Here is a picture that I made a long time ago when I attempted to create the massive RPG. As you probably guessed, I abandoned it, realizing its f#@%ing hard. Maybe someone would like to do a joint project with me?

Picture Description: Each circle represents a quest the character takes. It starts off as one quest that is neutral, then they can choose to become "evil" or "good" (Down quests or Up quests).
Colors Description: When you see (lets say) a green dot in one of the circles, look for the same circle on another character's events layout with green, and those are the two characters that meet up at that event. Each character has two of the same colored dots, that is the character's color.

That looks like areally interesting idea. I love writing scripts/stroylines/plots, and organising events. Although my map making skills are minimal (ie I am no artist), I would be happy to contribute to your project.

Yeah that would be cool. But really hard. How would you make sure the characters met at the same time? I dont get that part though. Sorry, i cant help you cause im kinda busy with some stuff. Sounds good though.

Well, each overlapping event you would meet one of the characters. I would have just made it so that you have to kill that character to move on (so you kill each character while being each character... that sounds complicated). But what would make it really amazing would be if you could choose wether or not to kill the other character which would create a whole new story! This could go on for a long time...

Yeah, ManateeQuest, I would love some help. Storylines aren't really my best area, and you could contribute a lot. I would like to get as many people as possible for this map. It would be a giant project due to its great complexity.

Anyone for some suggestions?

Hmm sounds cool

would be very complicated based on how many people are in the game and which characters are chosen.

Yeah, I was thinking only one player and about 4 characters. But, again, we could make it ten times better if it was 4 players and four characters (or even more characters). This would be a God-like map if it were put together well enough.

This sounds very interesting but i don't understand that picture you have there. Plus are you acually going to do this map? Or is this like an idea for someone else? I think you should try it out.

I would like to do this, but with some other people as well. I would need help. Not to be disrespectful but even Tuxedo-Templar would need help, same with (U)Bolt_Head. The picture is a little complicated, but I cant really explain it any better.

Okay, so I am considering taking on this massive project. Anyone want to help?

I don't think it would be done, for the same reasosn TT was unable to complete A&O.

Well may be they wouldn't need help tongue.gif who knows unless they try. If you attempt to try it out good luck. I think it sounds neat.

Aha so that's what happened to A&O......
It would be possible for 1 person to make it but would take so much longer... I dont feel like getting into a project this big right now.

The only problem I foresee happening is this that the map would be too big (file wise) because you would need a gazzilion triggers. But then again, there an RPG (FF Dragon king?) that's 1.1 megs, and it's probably pretty efficient. I dunno, how much space would adding a 100 triggers take up?

But it's definitely do-able.

The nest issue that comes up, if its going to be four people playing four stories at the same time, is that timing is EVERYTHING. If I have to go save the troll because its part of my quest, but another guy killed the troll 2 mins ago as a part of his quest, then I lose before I even get to try. Also, if you've ever played FFVII full RPG, you'll know that it take years (like 20-30 mins) to get all the the players active in game. This will discourage people from playing it.

If we have separate events, we have to make sure that they are synchronized. For example, make all the quest about 5 mins long max. Each player has five minutes to complete their quest. If they don't they fail. Regardless, they move on to the next quest.

The winners either level up, or get an item, or something.

For interest, you could make joint quests, were the lowest lvl people fight with the highest versus the mi range guys, or something.

This would work very well on War3, but is do-able on SCBW as well. I work on some storylines, and test out some balances issue with different units and battle systems.

But yeah email me about specifics and such. And if we can get more ppl, that would be great too. happy.gif

The thing is that it's not triggers, I DOUBT A SINGLE TRIGGER GOES BEYOND A FEW BYTES, it's a combination of things. Wavs are what make the file large. Make a hundred triggers, hell, make a THOSAUND triggers, the file doesn't get that much larger. The thing is the amount of locations you can make is limited, and the amount of strings in Staredit is limted. The max you can get with even Starforge is about is about 65000, I believe. Getting players active takes long? WHAT? There's a thing called Hyper triggers. >< Twelve triggers per second, not two, like the average in Starcraft. I can help with terrain and enviroment, as well as storyline/trigger concepts. I can make systems, I just trigger it out with many bugs. Plus I always visualize how an effect will come out differently then it will in Starcraft.
