Ever wonder how widescreen map editing would look like and feel? Even if you didn't, I don't care, and I'll show you.

Welp, just today I installed the motherload of map editing tools on my laptop for offline map editing on the go. This summer I'll be going places, and I thought maybe I'll swing out staredit when im in the car, or something like that if I'm bored.

First off, using a laptop mouse with staredit takes some getting used to. Expecially if you're using to placing units exact, but I didnt find it too difficult. I still would strongly recommend the use of a regular mouse, or things take twice as long.

Now, to the big part. Widescreen map making. It's a rather costly thing if you're getting it for map making, but you should definately take it into consideration the next time you have the option of getting something widescreenish.

With the square screens, having your terrain palette and doodad palette on the sides can really be a bugger. Some people prefer to take it off, but im not one of those people. Its quicker and more visual than the tree diagram, so I know what im doing before I place terrain. Here's a screenshot:

You can also do triggers while having full view of the unit tree, incase you need it.

Heres a quick picture of scmdraft with mutlipule maps open:

*Hint*Hint Just what a lot of people were waiting for... biggrin.gif

Widescreen doesn't look all that Überish, I could just raise the resolution of my PC to something insanely high and it'll be OK.

Having the Palette? I've been making maps for so long that I don't need it tongue.gif

Yeah I know, Yoshi da Sniper, the feeling of using the laptop mouse. I was once making a stupid map on my dad's laptop, I accidentally broke the mouse disgust.gif because I was tapping on the mouse pad thing to much. happy.gif *Thumps the mouse on the desk to show you but you live far away* cry.gif

Yeah, it's easier, feels more comefertable, and the good news is that people like Me and Yoshi won't be breaking laptop mouses and maps!
lol :lol

I already do all my editing on a widescreen laptop because my step-dad won't let me take up any more space on the family computer. What I like is that you can see a lot more of the map at once, editing is much easier. The only major problem I find with it is that you get disoriented with the size of the map and the screen. Playing in StarCraft you see so little compared to the editing, and I find I have to constantly count out the 12x20 grid in the editor so I can make sure everything is the kind of size I want it to be while playing.

Yes, when I had my laptop, I stole the mouse from this computer because it was very annoying with the touchpad. One accidental microscopic movemint of your hand and boom, its all screwed up.

Also another good thing with wide screen (similar to the multiple maps open), you can use this feature with StarEdit:

(The window menu. People always wonder what it is for, its so you can view your map from different spots)

My computer the 12x20 is about the size of the my screen (starcraft is 640x480, I am on 600x800, that is 80%. StarEdit menus take up just about enough size so the screen is that biggrin.gif)

I think they were referring to the touch-pads, specificaly.
Personally, I find myself liking the stubs in most laptops- they just need a little getting-used-to.
Though, trackball is the best. It owns the mouse to Hell.

As for the topic, Widescreening... my computer won't let me set my resolution any higher than 1024x768... cry.gif

Actually I have played several dozen games of war2 on a touchpad years ago, it just takes some getting used to.

You can't "set your computer to a widescreen resolution", you have to have a widescreen screen for it to be of any use.

I had to use a touchpad for a week. It's is still marked as my worst computing experience. I'd perfer even taking out the keyboard to make room for a mouse, then you could point and click the screen, it takes about as much time as typing on those compact keys. tongue.gif
Sorry, but I still prefer a 23" screen to a widescreen laptop.
