Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> Ban GTA: San Andreas?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Staredit.Net Essence on 2005-06-24 at 21:02:04
I just saw a thing on the tv, stating that people want to ban San Andreas, cause "it teaches kids that it is okay to kill cops"

I believe this is utter bull shit, and it is illegal to try to ban a video game.

Alabama is actually sueing Sony for "Releasing this product"

This is complete bull shit.

What do you guys think?

Lemme guess, Jack Thompson said this?
Go to http://www.stopkill.com
Go flame the bastard. He believes his beliefs should apply to the whole nation.

censored.gif ing jeek.

-Update-
Here's an arguement he made. Doom 2(yes the old one), was responsible for REALISTICALLY TRAINING the kids that killed everyone in the Columbine shooting. DOOM 2!! Here's how censored.gif ing realistic it is!

-If you shoot 50,000 times, you never need to reload
-If you shoot straight forward, you can hit stuff 20 meters above your target.
-You can take around 50 shots from a chaingun
-You can never look up or down
-You always have to take 3 seconds to totally turn around.
-A missile about your size has a splash range of about 2 feet.
-Falling 50 meters and landing on cement causes you to grunt.
-A shotgun has no handle, just a barrel
-You can pick up a green sphere and you are invulnerable.
-You can punch someone and they will explode
-Black colored medical kits make your vision all red
-Typing "iddqd" at a school computer makes it so no one can hurt you.
-Typing "idclip" at a school computer makes it so you can walk through walls

God damn this guy's an idiot.

Pfft, I wanna shoot the censored.gif who want to ban San Andreas, then the other people will be like, oh you learned that from playing the game! Then I would be like, well if it wasn't for you I would just be killing people in the game and not in real life. happy.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by ShadowBrood on 2005-06-24 at 21:19:18
This idiot is just teaching kids to blame other things for them being screwed up. I can just see a 5 year old mauling his parents and saying, "Manhunt taught me do it!"

Seriously, this guy's just fueling America's "Not my fault" state of mind.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Loser_Musician on 2005-06-24 at 21:28:13
If they take this to the supreme court, they're gonna lose. Sony is gonna win. 1st admendment. The most this will do, is cause more warnings to appear on video game covers, and to encourage video game stores to I.D. people more often. That's really about it.

Funny thing is, ppl that bitch about these kinds of things, don't really mind too much when ACTUAL censored.gif ING PEOPLE GET KILLED DURING A WAR. Man, they're such hypocrites.

This site's purpose is to give you the means to contact Miami attorney Jack Thompson if you know of someone harmed as a result of violent entertainment, including violent video games.

One current horrific example is a video game made available by Sony and Take-Two Interactive called Manhunt. This game allows you to train yourself to kill people by placing plastic bags over their heads while you watch them struggle while suffocating.

HA! That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard!

Games do not train anyone to do anything.

People are ***king stupid......
Report, edit, etc...Posted by ShadowBrood on 2005-06-24 at 21:35:51
Yeah see this is how you put a bag over someone's head. You use your controller and select the bag. Then you press X to put it over their head. This works in real life too!

Moron that Jack Thompson is.
He needs more hackers against him and hate mail against him.

FPS games really do train you, espcialy CS:S. Its just the hit box is just sometimes off.
Well, this is how i learned how to fight and use weapons play video games. Also RTS games teach you how to handle/defend your area and troops. To survay areas and hold a choke point.

lol no one voted Hell ya! I don't think you should ban it. Good way to tell kids to exersise and be come buff like Carl! and not become a fat ass, or to be weak and lazy.lol They have a weird aiming system too.

We wont have to worry about it because it would be unconstitutuional. I mean if they can allow a game were u can assasinate JFK than whats stopping GTA. Also, these lunatics that want these games banned i wonder if they have even played these games. Just because i play a game and kill doesnt mean i think it's allright. It's called commen sense and this tree hugger is retarded.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Felagund on 2005-06-24 at 23:34:02
I say yes because it's just glorifying gangs and whatnot. I mean, would you play a game where you were a Nazi and you just had to go around on "missions" in a death camp in Poland, such as: deliver 4 50 kilo tanks of carbon monoxide to the gas chamber in the northeast sector in 3 minutes? Or how about a rampage where you snipe as many Jews as possible? See, it's pointless killing.

Argue your freedom of speech all you want. Should we not draw the line somewhere?

Oh, so you're saying, "Let's ban all Doom games! And all Quake games! And all Halo games!" all because it involves killing?

And what you are saying, is not the point.

The government does not have the rights to ban any game. Because games are just creations of someones imagination. Basicly, if you ban games, you have to ban anything else that was created by the mind. Ban books! Ban board games and card games! Ban Art!

You cannot ban something, that was intellectually created by someone, it is unethical......

I agree that this whole arguement is supporting the 'Not my Fault' idea.

I look at it this way, would you rather I take out my stress and mow down some real innocent person, or mow down somebody in Halo 2 who's trying to get away with my flag. Honestly. Pick one ^
These games are:

A- Stress relivers

B- For doing things you wouldn't be able to in reality. Escape into your own little world.

It's human nature to point the blame on something else. Instead of telling everyone "My son killed so and so because I'm an i'lltempered heartless wife beating ass, and he became a drug lord because his mother is a crack whore." they tell everyone, "Oh, well it was that video game. Yeah. The one he doesn't even has and probably has never heard of. That one."

IMO, games can't really promote violence because none are realistic. Not even CS which is supposed to be "THE ALMIGHTY REALISTIC VIDEO GAME" (If you can't tell, I hate it ever so). I really gotta ask you, have ANY of you every said, "Hey, after playing this game, I'm gunna go beat up some random old lady on the street."?

Jack Thompson or whoever is a censored.gif tard who has no idea what he's talking about.

and also look at the world today. most kids play these violent games and most of them dont learn to kill other people. but of course, there are a couple retards who do that

There's a difference between making a game for violent fun, and making a game for political reasons. And if one of those political reasons just so happens to be promoting nazis, I perfectly understand why it would be banned. Not because of the violence and gore in it, but because of the message it would try to send. And that message being that hitler was the "good" guy.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by SpaceBoy2000 on 2005-06-25 at 01:52:39
I wonder if Jack Thompson has ever:

A) Played a "violent" video game.
B) Shoot a gun trying to hit a target. Heck, let's just go with shooting a gun.

Video games may get guys to look up guns and stuff, but heck, movies has done that for some time. A guy may know how to use a gun, and play violent games, but only somebody with really really bad mental problems would go on a shooting spree from those factors. There is quite a distinct line from virtual and reality, and anyone who doesn't see that line has problems. Like Jack Thompson.

This joke kinda sums it up.

QUOTE
A portion of a National Public Radio (NPR) interview between the female broadcaster and US Marine Corps General Reinwald as he was preparing to sponsor a Boy Scout Troop visiting his military installation.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER: So, General Reinwald, what things are you going to teach these young boys when they visit your base?
GENERAL REINWALD: We're going to teach them climbing, canoeing, archery, and shooting.
FEMALE INTERVIEWER: Shooting! That's a bit irresponsible, isn't it?
GENERAL REINWALD: I don't see why, they'll be properly supervised on the rifle range.
FEMALE INTERVIEWER: Don't you admit that this is a terribly dangerous activity to be teaching children?
GENERAL REINWALD: I don't see how. We will be teaching them proper rifle discipline before they even touch a firearm.
FEMALE INTERVIEWER: But you're equipping them to become violent killers.
GENERAL REINWALD: Well, you're equipped to be a prostitute, but you're not one, are you?

The radio went silent and the interview ended.

Ya, if you're gonna ban this game for being "Too" violent, you mind as well start banning the military for making people kill other people. And for that it also TRAINS people to kill other people, then those same exact people come back to their country with little and mostly no rehabilitation. (So they're still whacked up in the brain sometimes) Then are expected to raise a family like a normal person after they got done shooting a few people, and/or seen a couple of their friends die in combat.

I don't see them bitching about that.

Or even bitching about movies, or books that have violent themes in them. Hell, let's go all out, let's remove VIOLENCE from the dictionary. There shall be no death in our world!!

Please.

I quite frankly don't see how FPS can "train" someone to kill, I mean, they don't teach you real weapons skills, they don't teach you how to hold a gun, how to deal with REAL recoil, etc.... I've never held any gun other than a toy/laser/paintball gun, but with the paintball and laser guns, my FPS skills got me nowhere, its just not the same.
Ooh, look at his phone number lol 305-666-4366
Edit: I voted no opinion, as I have never played GTA san andreas, it just doesnt appeal to me really, I prefer tactical games.
