Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> Children Playing "Adult" Games
Report, edit, etc...Posted by MindArchon on 2005-06-28 at 02:03:16
I'm sure some of you are familiar with the game "Conkers: Live & Reloaded" for XBOX. This game is rated (Mature, 17+), and am shocked to see 9-year-olds playing it.

I told my friend this, and unfortunately we got into a big argument. What do you guys think the right age for kids to start playing mature games, particularly involving sex jokes, and violence.

I for one believe that if parent's allow it, the kids should be allowed only if they understand everything that is happening in the game and feel comfortable around it.

What are your feelings on this?

Unless you plan to make some kind of "maturity badge" that kids can earn through some kind of maturity assessment or something, I doubt there'll be a way to determine reliably what kids might be ok with playing mature games or not. And even when kids can intellectually realize the things they see and hear as fiction, they may still be impressed upon by mature content in ways older people would not be.

Age discrimination is just plain safer, in general.

My parents raised me without any sort of bad word guidelines or stork/birds and bees crap, so I think I would have been able to play something like the Conker games at 9 and not have it screw me up for life. I suppose it all depends on the environment that the kid is raised in and it depends on who he is. I've met some 10 year olds that had no concept of sharing and respect while I've met others who are respectful of everythign and take nothing for granted. Some kids will play these "Mature" games and think nothing of it, while others wont.

I figure the kids responsible enough to understand that any Rockstar game is made purely for entertainment should be allowed to play "Mature" games. The ones who assume that Grand Theft Auto is some sort of guide on how to go and kill police officers really need to get their heads examined. I'm not a fan of any rating system in the first place, because I think it wrongfully generalizes the ideal that all kids under 17 will not grasp the fictionality of the game or movie (or music for that matter). I saw R rated films at 11, and I found them to be more entertaining than life-changing. And the same goes for video games. So I'd be concerned if an immature kid played a "Mature" rated game, but again it depends on who the player is.

Eh, I have no problems whatsoever. My parents dont care if blood and gore and violence fills my T.V. Screen, as long as theres no sex, its good.

My mom raised me by letting me play R rated games at age of 9 and I'm glad because I didn't turn out to be a goody goody two shoes like some people I know did.

Yes, he should remove it or leave it at the risk of looking like a hypocrite.

Oh Chuiu aren't we quite witty today? tongue.gif

I'm sure that Mind Archon is old enough, by law, to play mature games and watch R-rated movies.

We all know he's a kid at heart though.

But the point is that there are a lot of members at this website that are between the ages of 12 and 15, and his signature can be viewed by everyone here. So he may be mature enough to look at it, but the majority of people at this site are not (not my opinion, just going by this "rating system" and law).

i have conker: live and reloaded and im only 12.
This is something that happend when me and my dad went to get it at EB.

Alright we go into the store and I automatically ask the man if they had Conker:Live and Reloaded. He said "We sure do." Now once he brung it over. He sat it on the counter. He said now sir do you realize that this game is rated M for Mature, because it has a list of stuff that it has in the game. My dad looks at me and says, you didnt tell me that. Then the man said, If he watched Rated R movies and played Grand Theft Auto im sure it wouldnt offend you. Dad says, "Yeah he has." Then my dad about called my mom to see if I should get it. He couldnt reach her so in my mind I was like YES! and so me and dad bought it and thats the end of it >:)

well on top of complaining about children playing mature games.
how about starcraft? we got children age 12 and below playing this game with the rating T for teen.
the only thing safe is, you can give a nerd a violent game since there to smart killing a person. but the opposite way there going to be serrial killers in their life.

I think that people who end up as serial killers due to games would end up as serial killers regardless. I don't believe that video games have some direct effect on someone's life to make him act like the character unless he already has issues to begin with.

And Fierce, do your parents have many restrictions on what you can and cannot play/watch? And how do you think that affects you? I mean do you think you're responsible enough to play those games and watch R rated films without going out on a killing spree?

haha that's what I was thinking...

I was brought up in a really 'prude' household; we weren't allowed to have water guns or nerf guns; we didn't get an N64 until we were 12 or something, and in my opinion it still screwed one of my sisters up, even though the most violent game we had for it was Zelda: Ocarina of Time. [violent, I know]

You've gotta know you're kids; that's what it comes down to.

Starcraft is not the same as a mature game. Sure there's violence, and swearing. There is not much (any?) sexual references. Conker is full of them, for instance there is this one scene where you have to bounce on a flower's boobs.

On the subject of swearing, who really cares? Swearing is just a bunch of words strung together that people have begun to take offence to. I do not swear over the internet. Swearing like crazy takes away from what you are trying to say in the first place.

Some people may think that there may not be harm on a child getting exposed to mature content early, but I disagree. It may have psychological impacts.

My mom is slowly understanding that i am not affected by violence in video games, at age 13. I mean seriousy, I have a 155 iqm i can understnd the fictionality of video games.
addtition:
when i first saw this thread i thought it was something about children playing sex games.

Let's go somewhere else with this, a little bit bigger.
What about Online Voice Contact Games?
Games where you can connect to the internet, hook up a mic, and talk to other people all over the u.s. I got a pretty good example for anyone who plays this game.

*Socom: U.S. Navy Seals(One or Two)
This game has a End User License Agreement protocol, which says not only is it REQUIRED for parents of children under 16 to read the License Agreement, but it restates that this game is not intended for immature children and those with mental disabilities.

Do any parents read it? Most likely not. The online community is polluted with immature smart alecks and language abusing children. Our current system for games isn't working out at all(this is a common case for XBOX and Playstation 2).

I think a reasonable solution would be to require parental approval for their underage children to play this game. This can be done a few ways. Game Cards that require photo ID for a 16 yr old, or parent of the child to be playing the game. You could make it so parents must log in their personal data into their child's online playing account, and in which case most parents won't feel like going through this kind of mess, so it would be the most hassling yet beneficial.
Personally i think making cheap game cards for online games like this that require photo I.D.'s is the best all around option, that way certain underaged children can play the game, but it would most likely prevent many immature kids from playing these games.

Now as for the discussion on regular games, all the video game industry needs to do is enforce the rules with allowing underaged children to play these mature games. That is basically it, not too much more you can do.

What I really can't stand is all the super high voiced little kids on Xbox live.

As I said before I don't mind swearing, but when it's used so often you can't get the meaning of what the user is trying to say, man i hate that.

I think the most secure (but unpractical) way would to have a secure database of every person legally in the USA/Canada. When they try to sign up, their real name is sent to the database where their age is determined. If they are too young then the registration is halted until a parent agrees. Perhaps by having their parent sign something and mail it back, they can continue.

I really think this is a weird Topic.. See what is considered an Adult game? Do you mean like Mature games? For example San Andres i'm sure is rated M. Like I think that immature kids shouldn't get the influence of these games. I have been playing war craft 2 when i was really young but i never acually went and did anything weird like try and Stab any1. I have heard of a lot of people who get things from games and try them out. I think its all based on Maturity level. So if someone who is 15 should be able to play these games because i'm sure by then they are mature enough. IF not than w/e. But i'm against Younger kids playing these games.

about what devlin said,
yes they do set limits and all that, but as long as I am mature enough to handle it its ok. now if I was a little retarded immature kid than there would be problem. I have either have these games or played them(rented);
Conker: Live and Reloaded
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Resident Evil 1(directors cut),2,3
Halo 1,2
(Note: as you can see im a big fan of series of good games)
Kill Zone
and Area 51

those are games i have or rented, or went over to cousins house and played..
*cough*conkersbadfurday*cough*.
but i believe you need to change the topic title. because none of these are adult games *cough*doyouseeplayboymansionortheguygame?*cough* because we're mostly talking about Teen and Mature games.

I think as soon as a male is born he should be taught that the place he just came out of is one of the greatest places a man can be, however, he should wait until he's at least 12 before he starts "hunting" for it. Until that day that he turns 12 he should just play games that talk/joke about that stuff.

Will that not urge 12 year olds to be inside their mother?

Lethal, we weren't told that having intercourse with our moms was wrong, it's just a common fact of life. Once men hit puberty (it was like 11 or 12 for me) they become "hunters". That's how I came up with the age of 12. That's about the age most boys start talking to their dad's, asking for advice and talking and joking about it with their friends. I would love to get much more in depth with this, but I'll get warned... I think I'm at like 60% warn level, so I better watch what I say.

Uhhhhh..... I didn't see him say that anywhere, you just asumed he meant their mom. Does that mean that you're attracted to your mom that way.........???

Cause seriously dude, why would you asume he meant that when he didn't even say anything like that?

And here is his exact words too:

I didn't get the impression that he meant your mom. And like he said again, we have been told since we were young, that it is bad to like your mom that way.

And seriously, that is one of the greatest places a man can be (not in your moms though, enless it's your friends mom..... And she is really, really, hot.... Sorry, my MILF side breaking through again.......)

But considering that you probibly haven't experienced that yet (No offence. Some of us are late bloomers happy.gif) you probibly wouldn't understand how great it is cool1.gif
