It's been two years since this map was brought out of conception and into the editor, and I must say, an incredible two years it has been. Generals is the most successful project I've ever worked on in my six years as a StarCraft map maker, but it would not be so without you -- the supporters and ideologists, my inspiration, since day one. I can confidently say that, right now, this map is the most advanced, intuitively collaborated, eccentrically unique multiplayer map that has ever been created.

But we're not done. All of the core parts of this map, namely the terrain, General selection, main bases, armory, reinforcements, rankings, and command points, have been created, and the map is now essentially playable. Now comes the fun part: special abilities, General's units, building technology, and unique playability.

For newcomers to this map project, here is an outline of what this map is, and what this map needs help with...

WHAT IS GENERALS?

Generals is a futuristic war simulation, and the most complicated multiplayer map ever made for StarCraft. Two factions, Omega and Epsilon, fight for control of the battlefield and, ultimately, the destruction of their adversary.

Each faction has 2 Generals (the players), making the game a 4-player, 2 versus 2 battle.

There are 12 Generals' Classes:
  • Sniper General
  • Bio-Tech General
  • Electromagnetic ("E.M.") Mech General
  • Infantry General
  • Technology General
  • Nuclear General
  • Black Ops General
  • Pyrotechnical ("Pyro") General
  • Plasma General
  • Psionic ("Psi") General wink.gif
  • Disease General
  • Bombardment General

Each General has their own special "on-field" ability, and 4 unique abilities that are activated in the top right corner. Also, every General gets access to the 4 Normal abilities and 4 Reinforcement abilities.

There are 30 ranks in Generals. Kill enemy units to achieve a higher rank. As your rank increases, your annual salary, and reinforcements' strength also increase.

Your salary is paid to you in minerals every few seconds.

Your authorization level is your vespene gas. It is used to activate abilities and fulfill other level requirements in the game. As you use gas, it is replenished to the level appropriate to your rank, but does not go over that amount until you level up. (I.E. Rank 1 gets 100 gas, rank 2 gets 200 gas, and so on.)

Command points are beacons on the battlefield that can be captured for a bonus. Once captured, they provide a multitude of things, ranging from reinforcement units, support structures, artillery cannons, heal beacons, and sometimes entire bases.

Once again, this is production thread NUMBER TWO, covering versions 0.6 through completion. The first thread can be found here.

THE VERSION 0.4 DEMO CAN BE DOWNLOADED HERE. Although it doesn't feature very many abilities, it shows you what I'm working with. Download it.
  • Tell me what you think about Generals!
  • Share your ideas for me! We need ideas for General's abilities, unique army units, and special on-the-field abilities. Read the first thread for an update on what we have so far.
  • Warn me if I'm doing something wrong! Thanks.
We're on the downhill slope, and the whole summer is ahead of us to get this done! CHEERS!!! cheers.gif

I've reduced lag a lot because the command point system is currently suspended. I'm reworking the system to work more efficiently, so hopefully the map will run smoothly in the final format.

For one of the unused abilities, why not have something like the Warthog strafe in C&C: Generals? Other than that, I think the helipad looks bad. The floor hatch would fit in better, unless you can devise a good helipad out of terrain.

For the fourth normal ability, some other kind of airstrike would be cool, or maybe a supply drop, which drops various preloaded supplies on your general (Medkits, ammo, etc...)
The sniper could have a shell that deals line damage as his fourth shell type, I don't really have an idea as to what to call it though.

The terrian looks great and all, but I belive the map is just too big. I know it must have taken a long time to do the terrian, but damn the map is huge. And if you have never played it before you might have a slight problem figuring out what to do. Although the map looks very good you did a great job.

Psi, did you forget my talk about Infantry General already?  blushing.gif

From what I recall, I thought we had the Infantry General be an attacker with not that many "out-there" specials but instead upgraded normal specials, such as med packs that heal 7x7 instead of 4x4.  Let me get my posts.  happy.gif
Infantry post: CLICK HERE! This is your post. biggrin.gif The Post above it will give you a brief overview of the first thread

Anyways, keep working on your map Psi!

Wow. This map is probably the most worked-on map I've ever seen. Once this project is finished, it will truly own battle.net forever, since my map is singleplayer tongue.gif. I just hope you check the grammar of the map before its release. If needed, someone could proofread the map. I could do this if needed. I raise ths concern because the map currently has some grammar/spelling flaws, judging by the screenshots ("Calibur", for instance.)

I don't know why grammar and spelling ticks me off so badly, but its just a thing I think good maps should have. I don't mind it ususally.

Another suggestion: If you don't feel busy or have mapper's block after you finish Generals, why not make a mod for it? Update the graphics and music, add a few new abilities, etc.

You really should hold your tongue. Didn't you even play the 0.4 demo?

This map has great promise. It should be able to entertain the masses.

Yeah Psi!! I thought that this map was totally awesome!!! I played it along time ago when you like first sent out the first demo. When I was playing it I was like *This map is flippin' badass, and so far I love it!* That's pretty much what I said to myself once I was playing it. biggrin.gif And all of the stuff that you get to do and choose from, and you get certain amount of troops for each rank that you are in and each rank that you go up. That's pretty cool, I was owning everything when my rank started going up, and I got a huge army, then I found some badass enemies and well I just got my ass kicked! lol Anyways Psi this map so far is really good, and keep up the good work on it. biggrin.gif

Thank you biggrin.gif

Today I added a lot of new things, and I won't be done till about 2am. Here's what's new.

Major Additions:

- Disease General (Defiler)'s main ability added. It's wicked sick. All organic units that the Disease General touches instantly die in a violent reaction to his inbred virus strain. But it doesn't stop there. Any organic units touching that guy who just exploded get the virus too. Then the next guy. And the next. Until they're all dead. In addition, you get paid for their deaths like any other kill.
- Command points now have 2 parts, the beacon and a control tower on top of the beacon. When you capture a command point, the beacon is given to your TEAM (brown or green) and the control tower is given to the GENERAL who captured the point. This triggers any other benefits at the command point to be given to that General in specific.
- When you obtain the required authorization to build a Command Center ("HQ"), and build one within the boundaries of a command point zone, your reinforcements and General will now spawn on that command point INSTEAD of the drop pad in your base. If you don't own a Command Center then you will spawn on your drop pad.

Minor Additions:

- Command points with a significantly sized base area now have border indicators on the terrain. These borders indicate the area in which buildings will be captured when the command point is captured, so Generals can get close if they need to, but not too close. They also indicate the region in which beneficial command point effects occur.
- Your General is minimap pinged every few seconds.

One word to describe your "Major Additions" SWEET! biggrin.gif

I like the (Defiler) touch and Organic unit and get the virus and then another Organic unit touch that one that just got exploded, then they get the virus!! Until they ALL die. biggrin.gif Nice.
