This just recently started occuring.
When using Internet explorer, if I try to get anywhere on SEN, I get a 403 permission error telling me that I dont have access rights to that section of the site.
I get on firefox, and it works fine.
*Sigh...*
Everyone's response to this is probally going to be:
" Firefox > I.E. "
EDIT --
Sorry don't really have an answer, this never happend before. Maybe it's something looking to be fixed in SENv5...
?
Yup.
The thing is, this is a slow computer, and starting up firefox really takes its toll on its overall performance...it gets to the point where its a pain just to type, and anyone who knows me I like to type more thorough responses.
And the only advantage I've seen to firefox over my aol browser is tabbed browsing (AOL has a different system, but can still be considered "tabbed") So I prefer to just use it for everything; but I actually have to start up firefox just to browse SEN.
IE is highly subjective to spyware and other things. That could be the cause. Seriously.
...the spyware wouldnt affect only IE though.
It would affect my internet, period.
Thus Firefox wouldnt work.
Though I doubt that spyware would keep me from accessing sites, that would kinda make the spyware pointless.
No, spyware would affect your IE, not FireFox. FireFox is... resistant? to this
Besides that, in addition to have the extra security package from AOL, I have mcafee, and my computer is spyware free.
And once again, it doesnt even matter, Spyware is not going to give me a 403 error.
I really cant tell you. It has to be something wrong with your computer, because no one else gets it.

How do you know your computer is free of spyware?

Spyware is specifcally designed to work only on IE because its faster to write the code to deal with one browser rather than all of them. IE is used by 98% of people today, so spyware is written for it.QUOTE(DT_Battlekruser @ Jul 7 2005, 12:52 PM)

It's more like 88% of all people. Mozilla took that chunk.

Download
HijackThis, run it, and post the log file here.
Until that time, you cannot say with confidence that your computer is spyware free.
Even if your computer isn't infected with spyware, there is obviously something wrong with it since this problem only seems to affect you.
Your version of McAfee isn't updated to this exact date. Most probably your last update is from a few weeks ago and someone could make a spyware program to go around McAfee so it won't detect it.
IE is directly connected to your OS, which I think in your situation it's one of these Windows 98/ME/2000. IE is part of your OS, thus it can't be deleted. Firefox is not. If any problem occurs with your OS, be it a virus, spyware or anything like that, chances are IE will also have problems. Firefox won't have those problems because it is a separate stand-alone program.

It updates every day. Several times a day, actually. It's really annoying, because I have dial-up, and browsing while it downloads updates is very slow at best.

WinXp, sp2.
ADDITION:
And once again, its not gona be spyware, lol.
Think of what spyware is...
Now think how it would be beneficial in any way for the spyware to block access to web sites. Really.
ADDITION:
Thanks anyway though.
Actually... some "spyware" tries to take over a browser and tries to access different sites than what you want.
Go to IE, load
http://www.staredit.net/Right click on the page, go to properties... and check what's in the address (url) property.
Either that or somehow your browsers use different ip's... perhaps one is configured to use a proxy and the internal ip that IE think's its using is banned.
Post a screenshout of this 403 error on IE.

What can I use to take screenshots?
lol.
The prtscn key. Paste into a program that can make pictures (liiiike Paint). Then save the picture. Post on SEN.
At least it's like that the last time I checked my own memory.
actually, ctrl+prtscrn and then shift+insert or ctrl+v when youre in a paint program.
but i just use ifranview. i mean reall, u just press c, than ctrl+z and its done. save it and post it on sen.
i have dialup also. (it takes me like 5 minutes to download like 3mb maps >.<)
i think ip is right. something is probably trying to take over your web browser.
i'd take tarh's advice and download HijackThis. ive seen it actually be recomended by several good computer magazines here in australia.
good luck, i hope you get it fixed.
