Staredit Network -> Terrain -> Cliffs:
Report, edit, etc...Posted by glytchur on 2005-07-08 at 12:04:03
This is for anybody who is going to or has asked how to make cliffs. Read this and post any questions this tutorial doesn't answer...

First off its better to know how to make the basic cliffs (dirt to high dirt):
In the pallette the tiles are all mixed up, but each cliff type is in a 1x6 line, u need to place the bottom piece, then the piece 2 blocks above that is the block that goes above it, and same with that piece, a piece in the pallette (usually) goes next to the piece 1 block above or under it...

the line of the cliff type from the pallette, and the cliff put together...

wrong way:

cliff

right way:

cliff

If u make a patch of water, and next to it a patch of high dirt in isom terrain, you'll get a nice tall cliff. You can use the 2 pieces that match the water cliff pieces with the high cliff pieces to make good cliffs (in the pallette there under the temple pieces in jungle, and under the structure pieces in badlands, there in the same main place in all tilesets),

(the 2 pieces that match the water cliff to high cliffs, the piece selected in the pallette and the piece under it)

2 certain pieces are ment to match 2 certain cliff types, as u can see here:

this is want u want to look for (this one is in badands) its about half way down, one of the last parts of the pallette before the lotsa null pieces that separate the isom terrain pieces from the doodads (in the starforge pallette)...
post any questions or anything...

QUOTE(Rantent)
I would just like to say that after you make a cliff, there are three different ways to end the sides.
Simply breaking off one level at a time.
user posted image

Ending one level abruptly.
user posted image

Making another cliff block out the veiw of the taller one.

Here is an example containing all three, showing exactly what you can do with mixing and matching these ideas.

another way (aka how rantent does cliffs) is make a high cliff with isom, then put the special tiles under each cliff, and make the bottom part, pretty much just doing it from top to bottom...

these are some jungle cliff brushes i made a long time ago, i forgot about them for awhile, there far from perfect, but there still very usefull especially if u dont think yur real good at making cliffs, even if u know u are, they still cut down yur time by about 50% at least if u use these instead of using the tile palette...

Cool. Yeah that is pretty useful information you got there glytcher. biggrin.gif There are alot of people that don't even know the basic concept of turing a regular ISOM cliff into a HUGE mountain type cliff. biggrin.gif Well for one I don't know how to, but now I do thanks to you.

OMG I've been doing all my cliffs WRONG!!!! tongue.gif
I just make a top part use the special tiles and make a bottom.
This could probably help a bunch of newcommers though.

lol, I was sure I explained this as well ages ago...

You can find all the cliff 2x2 tiles, their top and bottom blends, and even the corner blends in my badlands set, too. But nothing beats learning how to do it yourself, of course.

Interesting, although I'm not quite sure that I understand what exactly you do.....
*Shatter goes to look at the screenshots again to try and clarify

Those cliffs are really easy, I made some way when I just joined SEN biggrin.gif

Seriously, but that work takes no more than 3-5 minutes. Does it not?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Rantent on 2005-07-23 at 17:02:11
Well, it depends on if you know what you want to make in the final product. The last picture took about 3 minutes. It's funner just making things up as you go, but it takes longer.

I look forward to seeing some terrain that you have made, please post some within the week....

I love the tutorial tough.... *thinking* couldn't you mirror this and make large underwater pits?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by glytchur on 2005-08-20 at 18:46:19
unfortunately no because there no all water cliff piece... and the attacher pieces arent underwater, u can place pylon aura sprites over normal cliffs though...
