Simple enough, but I've never seen it used before. 8 units inside a transport, each time it gets hit with something other than a weapon, one of them is removed. When it runs out of them, it dies. Useful for asteroid fields and bound maps.
Sounds like an interesting virutal health system to me.
However personally, I'ld prefer to use the custom score, minerals or gas.
If you have a very specfic map thought, and you have already used all of those things, then it is a good idea.
A note, the same thing can be done with carriers and reavers I think. (And if you use them, you can spend money on "repairs").
