I live in Calgary. This week is Stampede week, the greatest outdoor show on earth. On average, about 100 000 tourists arrive in Calgary every year for this event. Calgary is 1 000 000 people. So, 1/10 people is a tourist right now.

Now, normally this isn't so bad. One that I've never seen in Calgary before, but this year I have.

The rich Japanese Tourist. Now, it's not that these tourists are all THAT rich, it's just that the cost of living here is much lower, so in comparison this is cheap to them (despite the hikes in price for tourism). This is good for a lot of people, because these tourists tip BIG. But it sucks for the rest of us. You can be walking along and BAM! suddenly you're surrounded by a strange language, nobody near you looks remotely like you, and that guys hand is WAY to near your screwed.

It has a tendancy to make you feel a stranger in your own country. Now, I'm not saying they should leave, or saying they're evil, or that it's just the japanese (they could be chinese/korean/just plain oriental for all I know). I just thought I'd get that off my chest, although normally I try not to bitch.

Well, I live in Alaska, and have seen plenty of tourists. That is our second main souce of income in this state. I find tourists to be a good thing, because although they speak a different language, they come here for the sole purpose to have a good time, which lightens the moode for other people.

We get "rich texan" tourists, basically because "poor tourists" stay in their hometown most of the time.
Bottom line, you shouldn't feel like a stranger, you should learn to except what differences they have, and maybe sell them something.

I sold a puppy for $50 to some random chick at the airpot once. Which is good money for a mutt. wink.gif

I don't really care how many of what nationality are in an area, since to me humans are humans regardless of heritage or birthplace.
But that's just me and whoever happens to agree with me, while that's just you and whoever happens to agree with you.

The language they speak in hawaii is derrived from Japanese, after all tongue.gif

Tourists don't stop by colorado too often, but when I was in New York half of the people around me spoke Japanese or Chinese. I can tell the difference between the two happy.gif

I personally can't stand tourists. They invade like ants. If I was a camera salesman, I'd love tourists. Those orientals love taking pictures/getting people to take their pictures.

Heh I don't see many tourists because they don't want to visit a suburb, and most of the time I'm the one that's a tourist, even if I'm just going to another state or city. I'm even a tourist when I go to NYC when I live in NJ. I guess foreign tourists from other countries can be awkward but they do bring in a lot of money. Plus, you have the same opportunity to invade their country if you want! smile.gif
