Report, edit, etc...Posted by PCFredZ on 2004-04-11 at 11:35:30
For those who read some of my posts, i'm working on a map called World of Starcraft. Being as lazy as I am, I'd like to make this a group project. Anyone here who want to can help contribute to the map. Enclosed is the map, unlocked and everything. Play it a little, get to know it, edit it with sc xtra or something to see the current style i've made it. Any comments are welcome, just reply.
Below is a tech tree i envisioned for "leveling up" in the game:

-=-=-=-=-=Terran=-=-=-=-=-
Start with:
Civilian
First choosable trainings:
No requirements ->Shooting (marine) (shooting level 1)
No Rqmnts ->Chemistry (medic) (chemistry level 1)
No Rqmnts ->Machinery (scv) (machinery level 1)
From Shooting:
Shooting level 1 -> Firebat (shooting level 2)
Shooting level 2 -> Ghost
From Machinery:
Machinery level 1 -> Vulture (machinery level 2)
Machinery level 2 -> Goliath
Machinery level 2 -> Siege tank
Machinery level 1 -> Dropship (piloting level 1)
From Piloting:
Piloting level 1 + Shooting level 1 -> Wraith (Piloting level 2)
Piloting level 1 + Shooting level 1 -> Valkrie (Piloting level 2)
Piloting level 2 + Shooting level 2 -> Battelcruiser
Piloting level 1 + Chemistry level 1 -> Science Vessel
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

After completing a current training, the player would be able to get the choice to "hero" his current character, which is additional training that basically gets you the same unit but under "hero" like raynor marine, so of course you can't hero a valkrie or medic.

Units like SCV and Dropship who can attack no matter what would do missions some other way like bring scv to a mineral patch or bring dropship to an island with stranded marines.

Since science vessel has no irradiate before heroing, i guess if human players turn on vision for terran ai -> terran ai kills burrowed lurker + human player bring at least 1 sci ves to where the lurker died -> the human player would finish training; -or- if terran ai brings at least 1 unit to sci ves's location -> add 1 experience, preserve trigger; kinda like Jean in the xmen rpg but better

I did draw tech tree of zerg n protoss, but my fingers are tired so i'm not gonna type em up today.

Keep da comments comin

Hint: Zip the file first, Not all Scm,Scx maps work when you upload it by it self.

I always considered doing this when WOW was released, but I'm occupied with Matrix. If you want, I can help by providing trigger assistance and what not, but I cannot work on it directly tongue.gif

World of warcraft is suppoesed to be a massive online multiplayer role playing game. But if you noticed, the game is supposed to be non-linear. l did see the hard work, but being able to do anything you want in a world of starcraft is better.

i used the mineral and gas containers for requirements in the Armory, and many other powerups as well. as powerups are the best units to use for "items", i can't really do anything with items in WOS, like creating weapons as you can otherwise do in WOW. the nonlinear part of WOS would be the choice of selecting your training instead of, like Marine Boot Camp, start with a civ->get marine->goliath->finish game. i'd probably use a countdown trigger after each mission, for a free time for players to train as much as possible.

also, what do you guys think about the best choice of getting game over?
either:

lose 1 unit -> auto game over
-or-
control 0 units -> restart all trainings

the former would be a lot easier to do, but that'll make the game a lot harder to play and get through. it would be a good choice if you want to express the fact that in starcraft melee and stuff there's no way you can get through a map without losing at lease one unit.
the latter would require some kinda "restart" switch or something, once activated, erases all records of player's training, which would be stored as Deaths suffered by player.

Therefore I guess this is what i'll do:
After player completes training, add 1 death to player of that unit.
If player controls zero units, end game in defeat for current player, so there's no chance for that death to interfere with the training storage part.

Sounds like an interesting map... I hope it developes a complexity all its own considering it will kind of be mimicing WoW.

in theory WOS is kinda like WOW, same format, etc, but as WOS is sci-fi and WOW is fantasy, there definitely has to be some differences, as while u can build yourself a sword with some metal and stuff like that, building yourself a, say, photon cannon by finding minerals and stuff would not be more of a ... crazy.gif thing. i dunno, i'll work on it a little more and present it to y'all

I was thinking of doing a map just like this except it was a war between 3 computers, each zerg, protoss, and terran. You were randomly assigned a race and you start as the workers, and gradually move up. The experience system worked like this: Each time you or your allies, or your computer allies got kills, the experience would be shared with all people that are playing. So gradually, you would either be a BC, Ultralisk, or a Carrier. The project was harder than I had thought so I scrapped it...

at first i WAS going to have it like the player must begin with a worker guy and level up all the way to bc/ultra/carrier, but what's the fun in that? the ability to choose what YOU, the PLAYER, want to be, is what will make the game unique and enjoyable for a long period of time. for example, ya know those "evolve" games? like simpsons mega carnage, wtf was the mapper thinking when he made a hydra evolve into a tassadar with no psi storm? the choice to "hero" your character in this game would greatly improve the gameplay, so you CAN get a marine with more than 40 health (Marine Officer... if u can think of better names, just tell me), but you can't hero characters like scv's or medics because there ARE no hero characters for those units. i may also make the game so every time the enemy suffers, say, 1 death of a zergling, i can add some minerals to the human players, then reset the deaths. the best way to use minerals is, of course, upgrades. i might use a giveto trigger that gives a player any ally research buildings adjacent to you, but there are people who liftoff buildings just to see what happens...

btw, attached is the marine boot camp map. it only works in multi, try it out, it's kinda what my map is building upon. uh, yoshi, next to the attach file button it still says max size: 200k. confused.gif it's in .zip form instead of .rar, just for u tazzy... ya know, you CAN just download winrar happy.gif
