Staredit Network -> UMS Assistance -> Too much triggers?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Gigins on 2005-07-21 at 16:41:09
I want to know. Is it bad to import about 50k triggers made by sctrigger? 50k=50000

Will this somehow affect the game?

1. I doubt you'll ever need 50k of triggers.
2. Depends what the triggers do. If it's a simple text and wait trigger then not much. If it's something like mass creation of units, then it will obviously lag the game.
3. It will make your map bigger in filesize.

They are kill triggers. 12 unit types x 4 players. 1k on each unit x12 x4 = 48k triggers. Since there is no perfect trigger kills to cash so I could use this.

Adding 48000 triggers will have a large toll on your map size. By them, you are adding 109 MiB of data to the raw CHK. Of course, compression will drastically reduce the size of this, as a lot of bytes are either null or similar, but I still thought you should know this.

I would rather have a couple of kills missed for minerals then have a filesize of an elephant.

Yea you both are probably right. I will make something about 1 trigger on unit!

And 48k such triggers take up less than 3MB. But I will use music so I haven't got 3 megs to spare.

3 MiB? Wow, that is efficient compression. However, that's still a lot of extra size. Most maps are in the range of 20-50 KiB. Keep that in mind.

20-50Kib what do you mean by that? Most my maps are over 100 Kib. And I calculated that 3 MB because I made 10k with sctrigger imported them in map and it was about 430kib. So 5 x 430 = 2150 = 2.1 MB wow this is even less!

Maps that have more then like 3 MB are annoying, they take forever to dl and too much triggers are bad happy.gif they take up alot of room.. but as long as they arent over a point where it takes like 1 hour to 10 minutes to dl a map on starcraft, it will be fine mostly
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Heimdal on 2005-07-21 at 18:12:45
Still, a 2 MB file (why are you using MiB? Men in Black??) is pretty big for a map. Also, you shouldn't need to duplicate the triggers for each player. Current Player should work just fine.

lol I use MB. It's UED77 who says Men in Black tongue.gif ! And as I said before I will make something about 1 trigger on unit. AND if I add music and stuff it will still take a lot off space.

The biggest map most Bnets are willing to wait for the DL of (and you should have a good comp) is around 700KB. Anything, and few people will want to wait for your map to dl.

I bet you get the exact same effect without a individual set of triggers for each player.

The only problem I've faced with using bunches of triggers is if many of them are running at once, or set to always. This can make the game lag.

Dude, just have it give the points every 2 kills and double the amount. Triggers halved. Triggers for 4 players? You can use current player. Triggers quartered.

Well I don't know. I am making a nice map http://www.staredit.net/index.php?showtopic=18235 and it is already 354 KB without 50k triggers and quests. I will use easier trigger "1 trig on 1 unit for current player". It is not so accurate but it works pretty good!

What? Why? and What? Even I with my poor connection can DL 700KB in less than 15 mins. And I live on other side of the world from SEN.

15 mins is an EXTREMELY long long long time. Nobody will EVER wait that long.

I agree, i will only wait like 5 minutes for a map download unless if its a super ÜÞer map

WOW I was so stupid wallbash.gif ! I miscalculated. It takes less than 40 seconds to DL 700KB (with my poor connection)! So WTF are you talking about! I think that it isn't a problem to wait 1.5 min. for a 2MB map either!

You people are fretting over map size, but look at the quote itself. The root of the problem is the kill triggers, which can be simplified.

There IS a perfect trigger kills to cash that adds different amounts of cash for each individual unit killed.

It is so far from perfect! You require a unused comp and a location on map. And I haven't got none to spare.
