could someone make a virus, spread it to peoples computers that say added iscripts or graphics to there starcraft database to make any pretty much any mod work on b.net with the hyper triggs? I couldn't do it just wondering, Or if not a beneficial virus like this then a manual download

From what I understand, you can only edit map & sc memory locations. Anything outside of it doesn't register or returns errors.

thats what i mean, what if someone made a virus or program or something that altered the sc memory files, or is that simply not possible?

If it has destructive usefulness, I have not been informed. Blizzard already knows about this, and they're investegating. If it has a potential for destruction, they will release a patch.

I'm pretty sure the 65535 unit ID restricts the triggers from causing damage. If anything was used for a destructive purpose, Blizzard would patch it. If it wasn't, and destructive uses were possible, but not known, then Blizzard shouldn't patch it unless it becomes a problem.

Yeah. They're doing that to me as well in some areas. Just wait for the easy to use programs to come out, and then you'll be able to use this without knowing how to find the hex of memory location #29594

Blizz was informed?
Let's hope they dont patch it because its UMS only...

The biggest issue is simply bye bye pointers with the Patch.

I think the fact Starcraft shouldn't read outside of this memory unit ID no matter what, will protect you from most things, beyond Starcraft crashing there shouldn't be any real damage to your computer.

Spreading a virus through a game is rather difficult, mainly because you don't have much to use to make the virus work.

i dont mean for destructive purposes and i do mean opperateing within starcrafts memory, not adding new things, changeing them, it wouldnt be spread within the game and i know nothing at all about programming

It is highly unlikely for the triggers on a map change the starcraft files permenantely. Of course, no one knows quite yet, since there are still many undiscovered effects of the Triggers of God

To my knowledge nobody's tried to abuse them yet. Only time will tell.

Suppose a buffer overflow could be possible, causing, oh GOD Starcraft to crash.

You guys dont seem to get what I am saying

->NOT A DESTRUCTIVE VIRUS

->NOT a virus that would be spread within starcraft

-> I kinda screwed up on the first post, NOT adding things, changing them, such as it going in and changing everybodys reaver grp to a smilie face with weed.

->If this would be possible it would NOT be looking outside of starcrafts memory files
Report, edit, etc...Posted by purple100 on 2005-08-07 at 17:23:49
You can't just "add" graphics through the triggers. You can make a Reaver look like a Marine, but only in that one map. The changes do not affect any Starcraft Data files AT ALL.

No with present editors Ect. I dont belive its possable to make a virus off of starcraft. However if someone were to make an editor that had no limits to the unit id than it probally would be possable.

You are talking about backdoor trojans or programs that run within starcraft to get onto your computer then no, very unlikely, what is a possiblity would of been a virus within starcraft that could throw you off battle.net and mess with maybe starcrafts memory? Or if it could read outside starcrafts memory, then your poor compy...
