`Chappelle's Show' done - unless it's not
Zap2it.com
(KRT) - A cast member of "Chappelle's Show" is saying that the show won't see the light of day again. But as with much of the ongoing saga of the Comedy Central hit, nothing seems set in stone.
Charlie Murphy, whose "True Hollywood Stories" yielded the show's famous Rick James sketch - and the accompanying catchphrase "I'm Rick James,
!" - is quoted in two separate news accounts Wednesday as saying "Chappelle's Show" is through.
"I don't think Dave is going to do any more," Murphy tells the New York Post. "We shot about eight shows for the third season, and they're hilarious. They'll be released on DVD, I'm sure. But that's it." (Murphy said similar things to TV Guide.)
If that's the case, then it would bring an end to the long, strange trip that has been the unrealized third season of "Chappelle's Show." After announcing in the spring that the show would return to its schedule May 31, Comedy Central had to backtrack a week or so later, following Chappelle's unannounced "spiritual retreat" to South Africa.
Chappelle later said that while he was "stressed out" over production of the show - he's involved in the writing of nearly every sketch - he was not, as rumors at the time of his disappearance suggested, doing drugs or suffering a breakdown.
A spokesperson for Comedy Central says the network's position on "Chappelle's Show" remains what it's been since the spring: It's willing to talk to Chappelle when he's ready. "The ball's in Dave's court," network head Doug Herzog told reporters at last month's TV press tour.
Comedy Central shelled out a reported $50 million last year for another two seasons of "Chappelle's Show," money that would presumably not be paid if the show doesn't return. Meanwhile, the DVD box sets of the show's first two seasons are among the top-selling TV show DVDs ever.
A representative for Chappelle couldn't be reached for comment.
