Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> if a human is given a 50-50......
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Staredit.Net Essence on 2005-08-13 at 21:07:18
yeah, you cant just NOT let us discus that! thats cruel....... well yes, if given a chance, and it is random, we will make the wrong choice some of the time. but if it a set question.....( what is the awnser to 2+2?) then it depends on the awareness level of the person. every person thinks differently...well anyway.....

I'm confused.....

What are we supposed to be debating here?

If a human is given a 50-50 chance, will he be more likely to fumble it or not?

This question is stupid.
It makes no sense.
50-50 chance? If it's a "50-50 chance", then that means it's random, and whether a human or something else does it doesn't matter.
If it's a given 50-50 chance, based on everything about that human, then again, it doesn't matter.
If it's something like "wil he beat this boss in this videogame?", then it's almost surely not 50-50 chance, and if it is, then it's a 50-50 chance.

EDIT:
oh, that poll your talking about.
Okay, that is a retarded poll. Why is it even in serious discusion?
For one, if given a 50-50 chance will you pick the wrong one? WTF kind of question is that? some of the time you will, OF COURSE! heads or tails anyone? pick one? You'll be wrong 50% of the time! ITS SIMPLE MATH.

Hmmm... Actually everything is a 50-50 chance. Think about it. Either something is, or it isn't. Which that something has a 50% chace of being whatever it is, and a 50% chance of not being whatever it is. It's gotta be one of the two.

Either the Earth is round, or it isn't.
Either Pepsi* is brown, or it isn't.
Either I'm straight, or I'm straighter.

See how it works?

That's not chance, because those things already ARE. And certain things like the shape of the earth are determined by other things.

Its not all a yes or a no.
There are "shades of grey" and even a neutral choice.
You find a wallet. You can:
1. Take all the money, dont report the wallet found.
2. Report the lost wallet.
3. Leave the wallet where it is.
4. Take SOME money but bring back the rest... etc...

If you simplify life so much it becomes boring and senseless.
If it were all yes and no there wouldn't be any killing because everyone would know it was wrong all the time, no matter what, no matter when, every situation.

Humans are stupid
Humans are greedy

Those two add up to yes, they would lose.

It's a freaking 50-50 chance!
50-50 <--- That has always mean you have exactly the same chance for both.
Duh...

Although, isn't there no such thing as a 50-50 chance? I mean, I could toss a coin, but there'd be a slight probability that it would land on the edge, fly out the window, hover in mid air and never come down, etc.

Yeah, I thought that was a stupid topic too. Even the poll was dumb. 50/50 chance means 1/2 chance to be one and 1/2 chance to be the other.. why are we so stupid around here at sen?

Oh, and how the hell is this serious discussion? -__-

Even if you roll a die and get, for example, a five, if you roll it exactly the same way again with all the conditions the same, you will roll a five again (very very unlikely but it would happen).

and now people can realize why it was a poll only.

First make this a little more serius, wether to trust someone or to not trust.
I wanted a poll because it can show what the majority of people actualy think about other people. Do you think people, when given a 50-50 question, that doesn't include luck, will they fumble it up?

ADDITION:
or how about this, a teacher gets REALLY mad at her students saying:
"Get this one two possible answer test correct or you fail."
Every student got the same information, some resources, ect. Since all of them have the background, but the wuestion is MUCH more advanced, (One or two grades ahead of their current level, but not totaly foreign to them.) Would the student be able to get it right?
Stop saying it's a dumb question and actualy answer.

We could start to argue about how brains work. Given exactly the same conditions, they'll come to the same conclusion everytime.

You have to include luck as a factor. Most of the kids would probably ramdomly pick one.
If it were me, I'd probably get it right. But I'm just a geek. uberwoot.gif

Yes, thats true you have a 50-50 chance of winning

You guys have no idea what you are talking about. Complex issues are almost always non 50-50. However this brings out the binary division of the world with equal sides. White and black, good and evil, light and dark, male and female, etc.
Oh yeah and for that 50-50 thing you work you have to use the simple format
X and Y
where Y does not equal NOT X
where X does not equal NOT Y

Actualy, there's another reason it's not precisely 50-50:
The sides are not perfectly the same. One side is ever so very slightly heavier then the other, one side will usualy have more foreign matter(gunk) on it to weigh it down, and so forth.

50-50 means that there's luck involved.
Seriously, why are people confusing "it's either this or that, but never else" and "there's a 50% chance of this, and a 50% chance of that, but never else"? Kahoon and Infested so far.
