Staredit Network -> StarCraft Editing Related -> To the "Map Restoration Society":
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Yoshi da Sniper on 2005-08-20 at 12:09:00
I suggested this before but it got lost in the topic, so I'm making a new one.

It'd be much better if you make the "Map Restoration Society" into "Map Recreation Society". That way you don't need to contact authors or anything, you don't have to worry about credits except to yourselves, and maps that are recreated end up being much more fun and innovative then edited ones, because its a totally new map.

Whatcha say?

If you haven't read this in the original topic then this is my 1st reply to your idea.
QUOTE(DEAD)
Well remake every map that we find a little buggy would be nonsense. And we can't remake maps so they are bugless. We can get bugs on maps as well as the original creators. Of course we will remake some old maps but our prime objective will still be fixing maps. Besides if a good map is unprotected then most likely it is stolen not unprotected by reason. And by fixing stolen maps we would do even more bad to authors than by unprotecting deserved maps, fixing them and then protecting again.

Yoshi please give us a chance. If we will get complainings from map authors that we have modified(fixed) their maps, then we will probably stop our works. We are not asking for a forum, we just want your approval. Maybe when we will be high in numbers and done some good job then maybe we would need a forum, but not now.

And if we find a good RPG with serious bugs in it. Remake RPG won't make it totally new map because a good RPG is based on a good idea and storyline. It would be still kind a stealing idea. Besides, if a map is popular and we fix it ppl will understand that its a new version and will still play it. But a remake would be named different and ppls won't know its a remake of that map. They will notice that only after playing the map. And that is sometimes very hard to get ppls play a new map.

Perhaps the map restoration and remaking society? (Thats a mouthful)
As you may already know yoshi, we are currently working on a remake of fleet command, we being spaceboy2000 and myself. It seems to me that the restoration part may be sometimes better than remaking though, such as in cases where there is just a small but game damaging bug, such as the reinforcment bugs in raccoon city.

I am divided about that idea, Yoshi. Reasons are ones DEAD brought up, and a few of my own. The reason why I was thinking of a "Restoration" society, is because fixing a few annoying bugs in an otherwise great map would, in my opinion, would be less of an intrusion into the mapmaker's original idea. Since most bugs are not intentional on the mapmaker's part (who perhaps hasn't done enough testing to know that bugs exist), I feel it is more justifiable (under "Noble Cause") to correct a few mistakes than to remake an entire map and stamp our label on it, with a ridiculous "Inspired by:" notice. Stealing an idea is something I feel uneasy about, and it is usually looked down on and not received well by the SC Mapmaking and B.net UMS-playing communities.

Actually we have enough arguments to burrow the idea of "Map Recreation Society" and never dig it up again.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Yoshi da Sniper on 2005-08-20 at 16:36:36
"stealing ideas" shall you say have been around since the beginning of time and mappers have not cared about it. Bounds, Defenses are all based upon stolen ideas, you know.

We mean stealing certain ideas. Like you thought of a new map with new idea not related to anything well known. You make the map, everybody likes it, and then somebody makes almost the same map with his credits on it. It's called almost the same and its a new map. Then somebody else makes the same map....until ppls play all versions of "your map" except your version because its old. Well, how would you feel? And this won't happen with fixing because the credits will stay and the original creator is gone too.

Not as bad. The author spent just as much time, if not more, to make it again, and he made it better. Everyone copies ideas, you don't see it?

not always copies are better than original..

It's a pure plagiarism. Like Valve would make a game very similar to Starcraft and call it Zergcraft. I don't like this idea stealing and stuff.

Yes, spaceboy and shatter are working on remake but Resident eVil is not a new idea its a movie and a old game.

Please PM me this map.

And also for everybody else. Feel free to PM me maps that should be fixed. Just add a small bug rapport and we will look the map over in our next meeting.

I also think that we could have 1 meeting per week because of school. Saturday 4pm by GMT-5 could be good. We should discuss our meeting time a bit.

Well, time zones are described with GMT. GMT-5 is regular US time. GMT-6 is Canada time...and so on.

Er...techincally, GMT-4 to GMT-8 is "Canadian" time.

I know, I know. But I can't give a certain time as I don't live in US nor Canada. -6 was the time Shatter posted for Canada.

And for Mp)Sniper....

Double click on your PC clock in the bottom/right. There you can see your GMT. The number(-4;-11;+3;+8) by GMT describe the offset from GTM 0. GMT-5 means that it differs from central GMT by 5 hours. How to convert? Just use your brain a little. If your GMT is +2 then and you need to convert it to GMT-5, just subtract 7 from your time.

umm.... offtopic.gif so any way, if were still debating on a name, we could be Map Fixers and Rejuvenators Anonomys (MFRA). i think that would work

P.S.: which page of the original topic has when meetings are?

We have already taken our selves as MRS. And I noticed in PM that I send to you all that regular meeting times are not yet designed. You can still debate about it till next week.
