Staredit Network -> StarCraft Editing Related -> Total failure in map making !
Report, edit, etc...Posted by smilodon on 2005-08-28 at 06:25:07
Someone here maybe knows the " The Gods Land " map. Well i made a bit better version " The Gods World ". The reason was because the GOD has not much power in the " Gods Land " map. As i said i made a bit better version. The GOD still can't controll all possible aspects. And " The Gods Land " is converted from broodwar map. Makes some unit creation not to work in SC original. " The Gods World " in the other hand is made to work in SC original (saved as SC Hybrid map).

So I was making new versions for "Gods World" until Location 255 limit. So i read some articles about how to save locations.

I remade the whole map. From 256x256 to 192x192. I made all the triggers and locations from zero. So this time i used switches and different units for one location to make as much functions with as less locations. The 200 unit limit for one player (GOD) came up because i had so many "control units" to trigger effects and stuff.

This was no problem. I gave them to player 10. And in game u can take control of player 10 units "control units" to control ur minions on the map. And then u can give all "control units" back to player 10. So u have no supply limit and u can make a base and create units there on the map.

I used "Staredit" to make triggers. The easyest way to compile them. But I needed thousands of triggers for unit creations and special effects (give/take ore,gas,units... take control, give control, destroy unit, scoreboard effects... etc.) So i used SmcDraft Beta trigger plugin. The best thing i found to get triggers into text format. Then with office tools i could use find and replace functions to make trigger creation faster. If one player had it's triggers ready i then used "SC TriggerDublicatorUtility" (SC-TDU.EXE) to dublicate the triggers onto other players as well. Nothing very hard. Tons of triggers ready in minutes.

The ideas are endless and nothing seems impossible.

But it IS impossible !

The impossible things came when WEIRD this happened. All the switches i used replaced their names with location names ! Then when i named the switch name back to normal, the damn location name changed to switch name. And if i named the location name back to normal, the damn switch name changed to location name. And the worst thing ever - Staredit could not open the map ! I could not compile triggers any more. I tryed to continue with StarForge... impossible. The triggers i make wont save. And if they save themselves, they are all messed up ( comment fields and location fields are emty.. etc )

So i took the wole map into pieces with "uBeR@TiOn2", "SCMIE v1.5", "GUEdit". And tried to fix the swich errors. Terran, Unit, Fog of War importing worked fine. Location, Trigger, String importing didnt work well. The Staredit could still not open the map.

So i remade all the triggers, locations and switches... untill the same error came up again. The locations and switches messed up with each other. And staredit couldn't open the map again.

Now i have half completed map. It works if i play it... all is excellent. But Staredit cant open it. And the strings are messed up somehow... i dont know how... All i can think of is, that using so many different things to make triggers messed something up.

So you who read my problem here think, that i should have made the whole map with one editor ? So - Staredit, the only thing where trigger creation is easy... but copyng triggers is a time waste... Hell noooo... It would take me years to get it all ready with onw editor and without other tools.

This is my issue then. If someone else has a similar problem, and knows a fix. Then i would be hyper happy to hear it.

PS:

IF YOU DID NOT READ MY TOPIC COMPLETELY THROUGH, THEN DO NOT POST STUPID COMMENTS OR SUGESTIONS... PLEASE !

SCMDraft2 automatically recycles strings. If you want to un-recycle them, use PROEdit to do so.

And could you post your map that cannot be opened in StarEdit but can be opened in SCMDraft2 and StarForge?

confused.gif PROEdit wont open the map. It sais "An error ocourred opening the map" Any ways to disable the string recycling in SCM Draft ? Or any ideas how to get triggers opened up as plain text without SMC Draft ( please dont sugest "TXT-TRG converter", it loses location names and lots of other stuff if convering )

Ok the broken map is here - Download

It is the latest one. Means, it should have the biggest string messup. Almost every time i save a map, i save it with a new name. So i have a lot of backups. Unfortunately it wont help, as i would build the map up same way as i need. The string messup will show up every time.

Here is a bit information about tools i use:
* Star Craft Campaign Editor
Build: Apr 13 2001 00:15:43
* ScmDraft 2 Version 0.5.5
* STARCRAFT/BROODWAR TRIGGER DUPLICATOR - Version 1.0
* Yesterday if i went to Bnet, i got the latest updates for SC.

ADDITION:
I forgot to mention X-tra editor. I tryed to use it. I managed to run it without "original" Broodwar. But i cant save my map as SC Hybrid, because it's using the VISION scripts with run ai script. These scripts work fine in game if i save the map with ScmDraft 2. And X-tra editor is based by Staredit... it gives the same error, i cant open my map with it. disgust.gif

It seems like you went over the strings limit... So far the only editor that allows the strings section to go over the max number of strings is SCMDraft2. I also discovered a strings writing error with uBeR@TiOn and I must thank you. Soon uBeR@TiOn will be able to protect maps with over 1024 strings (the string limit).

Hmm.. that also means that my map size will be around 300Kb without UberationProtection compressing effect. But if i need to make all the new triggers by hand... in ScmDraft2, then there will be no new better versions. I really need a trigger making system similar in Staredit, where u choose the conditions and actions from the list, so you cant make million mistakes in creating one line. StarForge would be fine, if it would work correctly.

So, is there any such thing ? helpsmilie.gif

uBeR@TiOn Trigger Editor should work...

Currently uBeR@TiOn doesn't support more than 1024 strings (meaning it might mess up if you try to do stuff with strings).

Where can i get this one ? All i know about is that uBeR@TiOn has a string editor. What i need should be something similar to Starforge or Staredit trigger making. I need it to work with over 1024 strings. And that there will be no errors between this program and ScmDraft 2. Maybe there is an improved version of trigger editing plugin for ScmDraft 2 ? huh.gif

Anyone knows anything ?

I looked at your triggers and it seems there are many ways to make it without copying them for each player.

You should move the units to a "stall" area which then has a trigger which moves those units to the correct player's area. Then for all the spawning, just use create for current player...

I know what you mean LegacyWeapon. And it's a good advice. thank you for that. The unit creation for player 1 is done. Now i can make it work with all players...

But you see... At this point, where i have these triggers done for only 1 player... i already have limited the string limit... ( i think, because ScmDraft 2 makes my map not work with Staredit and Starforge trigger making is full of bugs ).

I also have many more things to add ... Scoreboard control, sacrificing system, triggers for the assistant, etc.

And i cant do it in ScmDraft 2 only ( takes forever ). So i still need somekind of third party trigger makind tool... like Staredit or StarForge has. helpsmilie.gif

In second hand, if i may ask... will it help, if I erase all the comments in triggers ? ( I think i saw them in string manager ) This makes it impossible to see triggers in StarForge, but if i can get rid of the string messup im taknig this way. confused.gif

Erasing all the comment triggers will help a lot. I know uBeR@TiOn will work as a crude trigger editor if you are not to create strings with it.

Ayea ! I killed all the :censored:ing comments. It was total of 1021 Comments on 1021 triggers. And now it works again !

Ok here is the lesson to all who love map making. Do not never ever use "Comments" in triggers. Uninstall StarForge from ur PC because it sucks in trigger making, and ScmDraft is as good as StarForge in map making. All u need is ScmDraft2 and Staredit, or the X-tra Editors if u love Broodwar very much.

I also tested the location limit... it works to the end... 255. No string messups anymore.
LegacyWeapon, thanx for your tips. biggrin.gif

why shouldnt we use comments? just dont put text in them and they wont use strings.

blink.gif Is there any difference between emty comment and no comment at all ? ermm.gif

PS: I also discovered, that by editing my map sometimes i still get errors. Because my strings are already messed up between locations and switches. So i now realized, that the string messup happened in some time past. Seems i need to start from zero again.

1. Only the display in SCXE the empty comment will show a blank line instead of all the conditions and actions.
2. Well if you have less than 1024 strings, try using uBeR@TiOn to Combo Compress it then use PROEdit to unrecycle all the strings.

I finally found "Trigger Manager" and this new stuff if i upgraded uberation. But if i do as you say, then Pro Edit 1.2 cant open the map after Combo Compress...

I think im quiting this. It's just too hard to push my map to the limits. Thanx for help tho.

Hopefully you will save the project until I can figure out the best way for unrecycling strings (which I plan to implement into uBeR@TiOn).

No problem... until the next virus attack it's all waiting on my drive. But IF, then its easyer to strat from zero again.

With the comments thing I prefer making A Table of Contents and Subtitles(Conditions = Never) rather than commenting on every single trigger it gets annoying when you go to fix bugs and you have to go into the trigger, look at the cond. and acti. seperatly. offtopic.gif
