I sugguest you start with Arsenal III cause its the easiest mod making tool there is and the most usefull since it handles all of the main stuff like units weapons upgrades etc

Well, if you 're planning to go for the more advanced stuff in mods, be prepated to learn the great deal of it by yourself. There are not many guru modders around anymore, and of those that still hang around only a few are willing to share their knowledge.
Don't be discouraged however - speaking from my almost 5 years of modding experience - once you get the grasp of one thing, the rest comes all by itself with little problems...smile.gif

alright heres a list of more advanced editors but you might wanna learn them 1 at a time or you will have lots of problems

1. Arsenal 0 (same as Arsenal III but has more accurate settings since it makes the .dat files into text)
2. SCAIEdit this is for making ai scripts its very advanced so I dont think you should try to learn it if your new
3. IceCC used for editing Iscripts.bin (Input Scripts.binary) sorry I cant explain what it does very good but its mostly used for odd graphics settings
4. Memgraft makes patches that changes alot of settings links and buttons (like stim pack) dont work for this version of starcraft though so dont try to use it

Alright since you want more info heres a few of the basics explaining what modding is

with modding you create a new exe that instead of using patch_rt.mpq uses your own custom mpq its basicly the same as updating starcraft but it cannot be used against people who dont have the mod if it make changes like weapons or attack speed or anything like that cause they dont have the same version therefore causing a server split whenever you start a game

sorry you didnt explain what you needed to know about modding so I just told you what it is disgust.gif

whenever you have a question just post in the modding assistance forum or PM me and I'll try to answer it as clear as I can for you

IceCC is the tool-of-choice for editing sprite animationd in Starcraft. Yes, IceCC, not ICE, since the latter is buggy and quite :censored:ed up, to put it bluntly. IceCC decompiles the Iscript.bin into a text file which you can edit, which is a bit less uder-friendly than the ICE'c GUI, but it wins on the ground of the foncionality, what you'll see right away. I recommend that you start with ICE and get the grasp of the general concepts around Iscript, and then you'll move to IceCC all by youtself, trust me...smile.gif

Well, I never said that it will take you 5 years to learn the SC modding. I actually meant the very opposite: understanding one concepts let you understand others better and so on and so forth. I mentioned the duration of my experience just to show you how long can someone be in it and still have fun about it smile.gif

Yeah, I completely agree with BroodKiller. When BroodKiller and I were learning modding, a lot of the things like ICE, IceCC, Arsenal Zero and StarGraft were still being invented, so we couldn't have learnt modding anywhere near as fast as you guys can now. You guys have all the tools at hand, while we were forced to wait for the tools to come out. The good part for us is, we would have learnt each tool really well before moving onto the next release, like I used Arsenal II/Arsenal III for my first two years modding and then used ICE for a year before switching to IceCC. But you don't need to take anywhere near that amount of time, because you won't have any bottlenecks in your learning like we did.

Edit: I always thought iscript in iscript.bin stood for "image script" but since Blizzard never told us what it really stands for I guess we'll never know who's right...

About The Mod: It's Cool! I Like The Infested Terran! It's Ownage When It Dies It Uses Spikes biggrin.gif

About The Tools: Retro GRP is good for starters because all you have to do is waste time painting the units biggrin.gif requires no thinking just imagination ;D

It stands for Input Script.binary I know it for a fact cause its a type of programming binary file and I'm learning to program in C++

Thats because RetroGRP is old and outdated so it no longer works for stardat.mpq I sugguest you extract your GRP files from the MPQ with WinMPQ then open up RetroGRP and on the load external file tell it to load your GRP file you want to edit

BST>You just spoke my mind up in your post smile.gif

TERRAINFIGHTER> I think we can take your explanation as a possible one, however not because it seems reasonable (no offense man, really smile.gif), but rather because the release of SC was hurried up SO MUCH that Blizz left in many many many things unfinished and incomplete.

AFAIK RetroGRP haven't been updated for ages, so the chances that you don't have the most recent version are next to nil. Just bear with it smile.gif
