Lorene Yue, a reporter from the Chicago Tribune sent us a request for help locating "die-hard StarCraft fans in the Chicago area" just yesterday. She says:
QUOTE
Could you help me locate some players who might be willing to chat with me about their love of StarCraft?

Thanks!

We would be most happy to help. If you think you have an uncontrollable addiction to StarCraft that you might be willing to share with Lorene, please contact her at either 312-222-3054 or lyue at tribune.com. If you do get interviewed, please tell us about it in the comments!

Why exactly do they need to talk to starcraft lovers...?

My thoughts exactly.

That wont make SC popular. SC is basically dieing now(as slow as it may be)... They need to work on SC2 even though I know that a lot of people will hate it at the start they will get used to it. I bet they just want to make fun of the person... who would be so desperate to do that. I mean why would they want to do something about a seven year old game. Soon as this generation grows up all old games will be dead. Just look at Pac-man.

Obligatory conspiracy theory:

Maybe they want to talk about violence in video games, etc. and how that affects people. That has been in the news a lot recently; I can't think of anything else that SC might have to do with today that would interest the Chicago Tribune's target demographic.

That actually may be true. You know what, violence is a big factor in starcraft and its amount of fun. Any "fun" game always has violence. Even teris, with it's exploding shapes, is violent.

I really don't know why people want to stop it. They should be more conserned about nukes, terrorists, their kids joining the army, and so on. You know, the REAL types of violence. A game of Starcraft ain't going to make me kill anyone.

They should be targeting neclegant parents who don't watch what their kids play, and ERSB in my opinion should be law. Kids will have more trouble playing these games, and the parents who are too lazy to actually watch after their kids and see that they are actually playing games which they are not old enough to think for themselves and see the difference between reality and the game.

Let me have my gory, bloody and violent games. I don't have urges to kill anyone. Target the parents instead where they let their kids grow up on counterstrike.

it just goes back to the old fight, ppl kill ppl, not guns kill ppl. The *******'s who went on a killing spree from as they say "playing too much GTA" were just trying to weasel their way out of major jail time. They ended up with jail time but I don't think for life w/o parole.

Ahem... to quote wikipedia: "Even as of 2005, StarCraft is still one of the most popular online games in the world." I love how people on this site love to rant on about how starcraft "is dieing", without citing statistics or even referencing a source to these claims. It seems to me that just because you can't do EUDs anymore, Starcraft "is dieing".

I live about 50 miles from Chicago. smile.gif

Starcraft isn't dying either, it's just a big newbie conspiracy theory.

Eventually it will die because of newer hardware. Even now my 3 GHz processor randomly crashes on StarCraft whereas newer programs run fine.

And Yoshi, if a person can commit suicide by playing StarCraft, I'm sure they're more than capable of pretending to be a zergling and wielding two knives (have to be crazy, and the craziness will be the cause of death, but people will blame StarCraft).

I was just in chicago 2 days ago ohmy.gif

Anyways, they will probably talk about video games influence on school and stuff. I think they know that Starcraft won't create much violence in the society. Graphics are too realistic. If they did want to talk about violence they would choose a newer game that shows better "death" and killing.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Yoshi da Sniper on 2005-09-01 at 10:50:21
As starcraft gets older, this site keeps growing. I would hardly say that starcraft is dying in that manner.

On the other hand though, I somehow doubt that she'll be talking about violence in games. There are so many far more violent games to target, I think shes just trying to get interviews off about why it's lasted so long.

How can starcraft be dying when there's news posts every week (lately it's been every day).

And how many times did they patch in the last month or so?

Ha, I grew up on GTA and games like Hidden & Dangerous and I'm a very non-violent person (although I didn't really play a lot back then)...

Violent games don't affect people, period. It's most likely just games that affect people: they get addicted, they have social problems, etc. Violence has nothing to do with it, and a person isn't going to seriously repeat the actions of somebody on the screen unless he's very impressionable, and if the person's parents haven't already told him that it's bad to do that.

In which case, it's still the parents' fault.

Well, the person could be mentally retarded and not know the difference between right and wrong. But one could also argue by playing games, you also learn what is reserved for the comic world and wat isacceptable in real life.

Either way, to have someone go berserk and imitate people in GTA or Starcraft, or any game for that matter, would have worse odd than winning the lottery. Unless you live in Korea. In that case, whatever the ratio is in the States, simply subtract one from the denominator, if someone does the math for the demographic.

Either way, it means it's not happening. Unless you would like to do as such. In which case, I advise you to seek out devilesk's support group.

Still. If your 11 year old kid threatens to kill you with a double barreled shotgun, maybe its time to take away that doom 3 he loves so much. Instead, they get sent up to their rooms (where the computer is).

It's just my opinion. The Media says that the games are making kids violent, but I think it's the parents lack of responsibility when there is an obvious problem.

I knew tavrobel would eventually get around to suck up this topic too. NO MATTER what she/he says, it's always the same blah blah blah. "but one could argue.." god NO just SHUT UP. no matter how much you try to make your words fancy you still end up sounding annoying. and don't think sucking up to yoshi makes you any cooler.
