To most members, the worst Hurricaine Katrina did was raise gas prices. Today on my way to school, prices were at three bucks for the lowest grade gasoline. And, although it may seem to be the right thing to do to complain about it, that is not the worst thing that can happen.
People died, and the death/missing tolls go up higher everday. Ten thousand people are in the Lousianna Super Dome with limited supplies, such as food and clean water. The death toll raises every time I look up information on it. These are not just death toll numbers. Imagine this: You do not have money to leave the city. You take your chances in the basement of your home when it hits. The flood water raises, and you move up until you are on your roof. Finally, the storm passes, but by this time it is night. You hear the rushing waters, and the screams of people stuck in their attic as the flood water raises. Disaster like this can take years to recover from- Katrina did not just destroy people's homes, it destroyed their lifestyles.
How Can I Help?Reputable sites with more information:
The National American Red CrossCharity Hospital of Louisiana at New OrleansMercy CorpsLouisiana SPCACrafters United --event to submit artwork with proceeds helping the recovery effort.
There are several other sites that allow you to make donations, as well as local events. If you know of any leave it below, and it'll be placed up here to help advertise what is going on and how people can help.
List of Other Sites via deviantart.comI fully agree. There has been a lack of support. For all you idiots who say "They had it coming" or "They deserve it", are ignorant and stupid. Just because they live in the United States doesn't mean they're all the same and appose the values you do.
The only thing these people did wrong is live in the wrong place and the wrong time. Help them out.
This is a horrible, horrible disaster. The death toll is possibly much higher than the World Trade Center losses. Not only that, but the damage done to the actual integrity of the city is horrendous. Still, the loss of life will always outweigh material things. The city can be rebuilt, but the dead cannot be brought back.

i feel sorry for them, i mean, i cant imagine that happeing to me. I live in california, the worst we get is an earthquake....
*moment of silence*

Eh... Why did not more people evacuate earlier? They did know about it days before it hit..... I agree with Xghozt, even though the worst I get is a blizzard...
The super-dome, and other last minute places such as this are being evacuated. 25k people are moving out...slowly.
I am currently watching that on tv.... Look at all the cots!
Edit: Funny how we send aid to other nations when they have a disaster, and when we have a diasaster, no other nations help...
Funny how they only publicize American disasters and make it seem like it's the end of the world.
edit: hurricane*
And then the darn people are shooting at the rescue helicopters, and some police officer got shot today..
My family finally made contact with some relatives today from Beloxi (spelling?) Mississippi, although now they are afraid to leave because of the looting, their house was on high ground and has no flood damage.
This has been a terrible tradgedy and watching the videos of it, its almost unbelievable. My dad was down there covering the hurricane and just from what he was telling me its unreal
Like I said in the other thread, I have a friend who goes to Tulane. I saw him over here in California around July, but I'm not sure if he went down to New Orleans.
I'm really hoping he's okay.

Agree

, my country haved a earthquake 6.8 +/- few months ago, but does some1 in the world cares?
edit: but this still being a bad new for all the people that live in Mississippi
Sacred: What was the death toll?
i cant remember, srry i dont wanted to sound rude
The damage from Hurricane Katrina could reach $50 billion.Estimates of damages covered by insurance are as high as $25 billion, but "S&P believes this figure could easily be doubled" once damages to bridges and roads are assessed.

Since no one else is going to say it...
Canada has offered full support to do whatever it can to help. We have the most skilled pilots in the world due to the intense nature of our search and rescue missions. We're already getting everything ready, all we need is America's go ahead. Don't be so cynical.
I'm not saying they deserved it, but I do have to say "theyhad it coming". Those areas are known for hurricanes, they should have at least used different building materials and structural designs to protect against this kind of stuff.
Why the heck would they build a city below sea level anyway? That's suicide.
Well, people are "looting" because they can. I can't blame them. They need food and stuff to live too, so yeah, people are going to take whatever is available.
I think the gas prices going up is a good thing. It will force people to buy more fuel-efficient vehicles, or vehicles that don't run on gas, which will reduce the amount of pollution produced daily.
I agree with Deathnight, we should take Iraq's oil...

It's like building a town on the side of an active volcano.

Ultimo, I have the answer: Pompei!!! Gimme a cookie now

Sympathy goes out to those who have died. Nothing more shall be said about this topic from me. Unless, some idiot comes in here :censored:ing and complaining about something stupid.
I love that, Valug.
It is VERY true.

2. Uh, I think New Orleans is sinking, actually. It might have been built above sea level at one point.
