StarCraft doesnt copy it to your computer it reads it straight from the disc

The way I've tried is to edit the arr\mapdata.tbl file then make custom maps with whatever names you put in mapdata.tbl and put them in your mpq with the same file extentions

Here are my, literally two, cents:

!)Express yourself in proper english, please...

@)SC does not copy the campaign maps to your HDD - they are stored on the CD. Hence why you need the CD to play the game. The IDs you get from the CampaignEdit are, what TF already mentioned, pointers to the lines in the arr\mapdata.tbl file. Open it with TBLPad and look for the appropriate lines, read the path from there, and you can call it a day.
Now, to backup the original maps all you need to do is extract them (the CHKs) from the CD to your HDD, but I can't see a point in doing this, actually. In order to replace the original campaigns, you have to put your maps (important: in the CHK format!) in your mpq at the path the map you want to replace was located.
Another thing you may need to know is that if you want to use sounds in the maps that replaced the original campaigns you need to put them in the appropriate folder in the MPQ as well.
