Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> Censorship on broadcast television
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Slyence on 2005-09-10 at 05:24:14
For some reason, this season of Big Brother Uncut has caused a more heated debate than in previous years. The typical reaction from the conservative family groups makes the bile rise once again from it's southern position, and I'm sick of these morons clamouring for more censorship of things that aren't really all that offensive.

An article from the Age, contains the most slightest nudity
A Herald Sun article about Uncut

I'll admit that the show is pretty blam. I only really watch the Uncut version to see naked hot chicks, and because it is usually pretty funny. The show starts at 9:30, and is given a warning about what you can expect to see. Full frontal nudity, chicks using a hose to give themselves an orgasm and blames being put close to faces.

What really annoys me about these self-righteous dropkicks is their rushing to point the finger at Channel Ten for broadcasting the show, rather than the parents who are not keeping an eye on what their children are watching. If they themselves are getting offended about it, they can stop being lazy tools and reach for that nifty remote control.

I don't know how far the US version of Uncut goes, but I'd imagine that the same sort of people make the same sort of complaints about it.

I'm sick of being told what is and what is not suitable for me to watch if I want to watch it. The moral conservatives can whinge all they want about values and how our children will soon be corrupted, but they seriously need to shut the hell up. We need to see nudity at some stage, and once someone is mature enough to watch it, they can do so without being lambasted as some sort of pervert for doing so.

From what I've heard, network television in the United States is even more conservative about sexual programming. I remember the uproar about a slight nipple shot during the Superbowl with Janet Jackson ages ago, and I know that the show Oz can only be broadcast on HBO, and would never survive on free-to-air.

So what should we allow and not allow on free-to-air TV? I personally have no problems with non-pornographic nudity, as long as it is on at a late timeslot and the appropriate warnings are given. If people think that they are going to be offended, then they should turn off the television like the nice announcers warn you to before the commencement of the programme.

I agree, if parents don't want their kids to watch something, just unplug the tv or send them out of the room. It is a hell of a lot easier than calling up the television companies and giving them a bunch of reasons why it shouldn't be aired. That's the problem with parents these days, they give too many freedoms to their kids, and when they do get hurt, they try to blame other people or get the program removed. Rugby was like that at my school. A couple parents called in about the violence of the sport, and their kids weren't even playing. If you dont like it, pull out. Don't ruin it for the people who do approve.

I think only the public TV channels should be somewhat censored for things like the News and stuff.

However for any other programs and shows I don't think there should be censorship, because anyway many shows don't even have anything that needs to be censored and many things could do without bad language or nudity or whatever.

Sometimes the nudity and excessive language just isn't necessary and it's inappropriate.

The government sucks. Censor out cartoon network and the primetime news and crap. Not the movie where some guy guts 8 people with a fork. Last time i checked, your kids shouldnt be watching it anyway.

Ya, blam I was watching WB11 one night and it was showing Final Destination 2, and it had the blam censored out of it, like all the parts when they died, it really made the movie suck.

I think in the future they could do something where you could turn censorship on and off. Like you could make it bleep out the bad words or not and control it yourself. And it would like maybe put black bars over the nudity if you want to censor it or not. And it would cut the graphic gory parts of a movie out if you want or not.

Like in Shaun of the Dead, there's a scene where the two main characters and the mean house pwner (All roommateS) get in a heated argument and they are like:

"F---ing f--- you! You f---ing do no f---ing thin,g you f---ing prick...!"

In the extras, they did a censored version for tv etc and it was like:

"Funking funk you! You funking do no funking thing, you funking prink...!"

It was HILLARIOUS!

[center]All hail my ' censored.gif censorship!' shirt!

How are people getting so offended by this stuff? They sit there for a half hour and watch something that they find terribly offensive? Why can't they just change the channel, or better yet, turn off the TV? What lets the dictate what I can watch?

Oh no! People are using a form of language I don't like! They say damn, instead of darn, and blam and instead of shoot. God would never allow this, because God speaks english. disgust.gif

I get offended when people say darn instead of damn. Seriously, I do. I find darn to be a lot more offensive than the word damn. Not because of the way it sounds, but because of the meaning they're saying: "I'm too good to cuss. I got better taste, and I'm more mature." Ya, real mature there bub. Only real adults don't have the balls to speak their age.

Seriously, censor the word darn, shoot, and holy cow. I find them offensive, therefore they must be censored.

Some nudity I could understand for broadcast t.v., but language, get the censored.gif out here. Infact, even this site pisses me off. Why the hell do we have this place censored? Honestly yoshi, wtf. I can't log on to the site from high school, so why do we have it censored again? To make some cry baby mommies and daddies happy? SC is rated Teen, and the last time I checked, teens cuss a LOT. (The last time I pointed this out, my account got banned for 2 days with out so much as a PM or anything. Nice way to solve an argument)

U can block channels with channel blocker thing, i dont think anything should be censored, becuz if ur watching sumthing ur probably mature enough to watch it, so no, no censors.

Blech, I find most television censorship rather disgusting, as nearly all of the time that which is censored is so commonplace in society that I would be suprised to meet someone who HADN'T seen/heard them before.
I also find it annoying when parent groups try extra hard to censor anime because its "cartoons" therefor it must be for children. Basically, plaster however many warnings you want on something, but within limits, don't censor. (Within limits being like nothing nc-17. Also, as others have said, ever hear of a V-chip?

No parent can keep their child from accesing porn now adays. And now, with all these hoes n' wonderful friends in music videos that are showing everything but the nipple, its impossible to stop it. All you have to do is stay up past 12:00 and Shazam! Porn. (that goes for us cable users) I just hate when one show gets blamed for it all. Plus there is the internet. All you have to do is google the word "boobies" and there you go. They should just give up(it would bring up their ratings)

Ah, parent have great logic when it comes to anime.

Anime = Animated
And Cartoons = Animated
Therefore, Anime = Cartoons
Since, Cartoons = Children
Thus, Anime = Children

I find it really really amusing when parents complain about the violence or whatever they dislike that is shown in late night anime. I mean, shouldn't your kids be sleeping? It's not called "Adult Swim" because it's for little kids.

[center]Rancid - Vanilla Sex
"Don't ever take away from me my pornography
Obviously we don't agree on what's obscene
I have the right to choose what I want to see and read
Don't ever try to take away from me and my right to privacy
because what I do is no one's business but me

So stay in your missionary position
I hope that you get bored to death
There's no way in hell I'm goin through life havin vanilla sex

The government is tryin to get in your bedroom
Better lock your door and close your shades
Because there could be someone watching you today

Why do try to make things illegal?
Why do we have to be twenty-one?
You're so afraid that people are havin way too much fun, ya know
Why do you care what I do in my bedroom?
Why do you wanna know how I screw?
It seems to me you've got nothing better to do"

No, I didn't put this in the wrong thread.

Sometimes the funny parts are when they say the "bad words". If you say it for the sake of saying it then it is bad. If you say it to do a "joke" or to show emotions then I think it is ok. The reason why the parents call the TV stations and complain about the "omfg" of the TV show is because their own kids are never wrong. Therefore you just call the TV show and complaine. You cannot unplug/take away the TV from the kid, nor can you just watch the show with them and explain the "bad" parts.

LoL.
Here i do not agree with you.
Sure, i dont say darn, i say damn.. but i dont say F___ or any of that.
Basically what you're saying is that when your at some age you should
curse.. Do u ever wonder why people dont like it?
Maybe not, but the fact that they dont like it might deter some people from cursing.
Most, no, but did u ever notice that most of the smart people (the really smart ones) curse less then those poor fools (i know its not usually not their fault) who can barely manage a 65%?

I know its all opinions.. but i must say, i get offended by that opinion because if u bring that darn/damn one level up, it would apply to me.
